Susceptibility of hospital-based health care personnel to varicella-zoster virus infections.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) transmission poses a major infection risk for health care workers in the hospital environment. Immunologically normal adults who contract varicella have 9 to 25 times the risk of major morbidity or death from infection compared with healthy children. Moreover, varicella infection during pregnancy is associated with a high rate of complications and the risk of the congenital varicella syndrome. To evaluate susceptibility to VZV infection among hospital workers, the employee health service screened 241 personnel for VZV antibody by the indirect fluorescent antibody t

Minimizing tuberculosis risk to hospital personnel and students exposed to unsuspected disease.

A 15-month prospective study of the personnel and students exposed to initially unsuspected active cases of tuberculosis was undertaken to define the risk of their acquiring infection. Eight of 484 (1.65%) personnel exposed to 17 initially unsuspected tuberculosis patients and 5 of 2013 (0.25%) unexposed personnel with similar risk but no known exposures developed positive tuberculin skin tests. This greater than sixfold increase in conversion rate for the exposed group was significant (chi-2=14.83; P=0.0003). Delay in making the diagnosis in these patients was associated with failure to apply

[Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus among personnel working in a teaching hospital].

We have studied prospectively the nasal carriage status of Staphylococcus aureus among all health-care workers in the Valdivia Hospital Base. A total of 522 nasal samples were evaluated. Nasal carriage rate was 34.9% for all personnel. Higher rates were seen in Pediatric wards and Central Kitchen Service. Isolated strains were resistant to penicillin (98.3%). However, sensitivity to other antimicrobial agents was high. According to the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, we identified 12 different groups of strains or antibiotypes. Three of the multiple resistant antibiotypes (resistant to 4

[An outbreak of rubella among hospital personnel and measures taken against hospital infection--cost-benefits of the measure].

There is no nationwide outbreak of rubella after 1992 in Japan, but a local outbreak remains. Recently, some cases of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) were reported after a local outbreak. An outbreak of rubella among hospital personnel occurred in our hospital located on Tanegashima Island on March and April 2003 after a visit of one rubella patient. Fifteen employees, including 7 clerks, 6 nurses, one doctor, and one radiologist, experienced rubella. A total of 259 employees in our hospital employees were examined for anti rubella hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests with informed consent

[Seroepidemiological analysis of hepatitis B virus infection between anesthesia personnel and hospital administration staffs in Changhua Christian Hospital].

For hospital personnel, transmission of virus is a common and serious occupational hazard. Other than suffering from physical discomfort, these infected hospital staffs may also transmit the disease to patients through their blood, mucous or secretion contamination. The purpose of this study is intended to understand the condition of hepatitis B virus infection between anesthetists and hospital administration staffs. Forty-six anesthetists (study group) and 90 hospital administration staffs (control group) were volunteers of the study. Blood samples for serologic and biochemical test of hepati

Noise Exposure in a Dental Teaching Hospital: Investigations and Recommendations for Dental Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to excessive noise is a highly preventable occupational risk, with irreversible side effects that may negatively impact an individual's quality of life, such as noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. Dental personnel may be at particular risk due to their exposure to high levels of noise from dental equipment. Despite existing regulations and guidelines, there is limited understanding of cumulative noise exposure in dental teaching hospitals, particularly with respect to compliance with occupational standards. The aim of this study is to quantify the levels of noise ex

[HIV transmission in hospitals and office practice. Protection of patients and medical personnel].

Research has brought full knowledge of the identity of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its infective pathways. There are not enough diagnostic tools, however, to detect all HIV carriers in the first weeks and months after infection. This fact emphasizes that all patients should be assumed to be infectious for HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. A slight but certainly existent risk for all health-care workers is a reality. Information and recommendations concerning the protection of surgical personnel against acquisition of HIV while performing their duties, and protection of HIV car

[Personnel at risk for occupational blood exposure in a university hospital in West Algeria].

The accidental occupational exposure of health care workers to blood or other body fluids after skin injury or mucous contact, constitutes a risk for the transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) or human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). This paper presents the results of a survey carried out over two years (January 2005 - December 2006) on reported occupational blood exposures (OBE). The study aimed to determine incidence, workers and professional categories at risk, and circumstances of OBE occurrence in order to identify avoidable cases and to orient prevention mea

Development and psychometric validation of the hospital Security Personnel Narrative Competency Scale (HSPNCS).

BACKGROUND: Hospital security personnel frequently interact with patients and families in emotionally complex and potentially conflict-prone situations. However, no specific instrument is available to assess narrative competency in this healthcare support workforce. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate the Hospital Security Personnel Narrative Competency Scale (HSPNCS). METHODS: A methodological study was conducted to develop and validate the HSPNCS. Scale development followed a theory-driven adaptation approach based on the classical conceptualization of narrative compet

Mapping perceptions related to acceptance of smallpox vaccination by hospital emergency room personnel.

Emergency department personnel would be first responders in the event of a bioterror smallpox outbreak, yet few were willing to be vaccinated during the 2002 federal campaign. To better understand vaccination concerns, perceptual mapping methods were used to create multidimensional models of how emergency department personnel (N= 73) in the Philadelphia area perceive the risks and benefits of smallpox vaccination under 4 levels of threat: (1) today; (2) if another terrorist attack happened anywhere in the U.S.; (3) if a smallpox attack happened somewhere in the U.S.; (4) if a smallpox attack h

Attitudes toward living liver donation among hospital personnel in services not related to transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: The deficiency in livers and waiting list mortality have encouraged more living liver donation, although it is not exempt from morbidity and mortality. The enthusiasm of transplant teams for this kind of donation is increasing; however, the attitudes toward it are not so clear among other health professionals. Our objective was to analyze the attitudes toward living liver donation among hospital professionals in services without habitual relations with transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A random sample was stratified for service not related to transplantation and job catego

Should routine throat cultures be done in hospital personnel complaining of a sore throat?

In a 750-bed community-teaching hospital with 3,200 employees, throat cultures were routinely done in hospital personnel complaining of a sore throat. During a 3-month period, 323 employees had throat cultures; only 20 (6.2%) of these throat cultures grew group A streptococcus. The prevalence of positive throat cultures was similarly low in employees (6.2%) and adult patients (7.3%). There was no evidence that employees either had higher prevalence of group A streptococcal pharyngitis or that they spread the infection to patients. It is concluded that routine throat cultures are not warranted

Clinical Presentation, Management and In-Hospital Outcome of Healthcare Personnel With COVID-19 Disease.

Objective Healthcare personnel (HCP) are undoubtedly one of the major frontline fighters in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that many HCP have become infected by COVID-19 globally. The infection of HCP has received great attention in social media and is frequently reported from different parts of the world. However, there are few scientific reports addressing this aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome of COVID-19 infection among the HCP of o
