Risk for Severe COVID-19 Outcomes among Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, the Netherlands.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected persons in long-term care, who often experience health disparities. To delineate the COVID-19 disease burden among persons with intellectual disabilities, we prospectively collected data from 36 care facilities for 3 pandemic waves during March 2020-May 2021. We included outcomes for 2,586 clients with PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, among whom 161 had severe illness and 99 died. During the first 2 pandemic waves, infection among persons with intellectual disabilities reflected patterns observed in the general population, but case-fatal

The importance of leisure in the lives of persons with congenital physical disabilities.

Although occupational therapists emphasize a balance among the three occupational areas of self-care, productivity, and leisure in people's lives, leisure often is focused on less than the other areas in both the research literature and clinical practice. Very little research has been conducted on the benefits of leisure activities in adults with congenital disabilities. The information contained in this article is a secondary analysis of the interview protocols of nine adults (30-50 years of age) with either cerebral palsy or spina bifida. The primary purpose of the interview was to determine

This study of 227 elders with hearing impairment sought to gain a description of their multiple needs relative to demographics, health status physical status, and psychosocial status. Furthermore, we compared along the same dimensions the 227 elders with hearing impairment with 495 frail elders who re

Analysis of expenditures and outcomes of residential alternatives for persons with developmental disabilities.

Outcome variables included community access, social activities, community inclusion, family relationships, and choice. Comparison of participants' personal characteristics revealed no differences between groups, but several differences emerged when the community sample was grouped by residence size or public versus private ownership. A study exploring procedures used to select and analyse microenterprises for persons with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Attaining the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Goals, such as fighting poverty and involving adults in work, requires the involvement of professionals such as occupational therapists. Persons with disabilities are among the adults to whom occupational therapists provide work or vocational rehabilitation services for productivity and well-being. Occupational therapists have skills such as analysing tasks to determine associated demands and requirements. The analysis ensures task feasibility, suitability, and matching of persons with disabilities. However, anecdotal evidence indicate

Poor performance on serial visual tasks in persons with reading disabilities: impaired working memory?

The present study investigates the performance of persons with reading disabilities (PRD) on a variety of sequential visual-comparison tasks that have different working-memory requirements. In addition, mediating relationships between the sequential comparison process and attention and memory skills were looked for. Our findings suggest that PRD perform worse than normally achieving readers (NAR) when the task requires more than a minimal amount of working memory, unrelated to presentation rate. We also demonstrate high correlations between performance on the task with the most working-memory

Dental health in persons with disability.

Systemic and structural barriers limit dental health for individuals with special healthcare needs (SHCN), who have poorer dental hygiene, higher rates of dental disorders, and less access to oral care. We aimed to understand these barriers directly from the patient and caregiver population as well as review the literature on oral health of individuals with SHCN. We reviewed the literature on individuals and caregivers of those with SHCN to identify barriers to dental healthcare faced by these individuals. We focused on clinical and educational interventions to support clinicians treating this
