INTRODUCTION: Virtual healthcare holds significant potential to advance inclusive healthcare for persons with disabilities in India, supporting the World Health Organization's goal of Universal Health Coverage. However, individuals with disabilities often face barriers to accessing virtual healthcare due to a lack of disability-inclusive infrastructure, technology, and operational support, which further limits equitable service delivery. This study aimed to investigate the experiences of persons with disabilities and their caregivers regarding virtual healthcare services in India. The focus wa

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children who are exposed to more than one spoken language can be described as deaf and multilingual learners (DMLs). Increased globalisation and technological advancements in hearing amplification mean an increasing number of children who are DHH access more than one spoken language (with and without the presence of signed languages). A growing body of evidence suggests that DMLs can develop competency in more than one spoken language. However, critical evaluation of factors contributing to positive outcomes appears limited.
AIMS: The purpose of this

Many U.S. policies inspired by the Science of Reading rest on two assumptions: (1) skilled reading always involves automatic mapping between written words and speech sounds, and (2) all children benefit from systematic instruction of phonological awareness and phonics. These assumptions are not wholly accurate, that they do not consider scientific evidence from deaf readers, and that policies based on these assumptions may be harmful to deaf children. First, skilled reading does not always rely on phonology. Evidence shows that deaf readers can read effectively without using spoken language ph

Fingerspelling and its relationship with literacy skills among deaf and hard of hearing children who use American Sign Language is an increasingly popular research topic. However, there is limited research on whether reading interventions that systematically include fingerspelling are more effective for improving literacy skills than reading interventions that do not. In an adapted alternating-treatment single-case study, the authors contrasted the number of words learned under three conditions: a productive fingerspelling condition, in which word reading was taught through activities that emp

BACKGROUND: Disability in India is associated with increasing non-communicable diseases, rising longevity, and increasing accidents and injuries. Though studies have examined prevalence, patterns, and socioeconomic correlates of disability, no attempt has been made in estimating age of onset of disability in India.
OBJECTIVE: This paper investigates the economic gradient of age of onset of locomotor, visual, hearing, speech, mental retardation, mental illness, and other disabilities in India.
METHOD: We use nationally representative data of 106,894 disabled individuals from the 76th round of

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review studies measuring the influence of pre-existing disability on the risk of sustaining an injury.
DESIGN: Systematic review.
DATA SOURCES: Electronic databases searched included Medline (Pubmed), ProQuest, Ovid and EMBASE.
INCLUSION CRITERIA: Studies (1990-2010) in international peer-reviewed journals were identified with main inclusion criteria being that the study assessed involvement of injury sustained by persons with and without pre-existing disability.
METHODS: Studies were collated by design and methods, and evaluation of results.
RESULTS: Twenty-t

The major purpose of the present systematic review is to critically evaluate the literature on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) with d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) students. It is also of interest to analyze any existing studies on the use of AI to improve the reading skills of these students. In light of limited available investigations, it is important to describe the development of a funded AI reading project to be proffered as a model for future research. The studies reviewed provide various examples of the use of deep learning, machine learning, and AI applications for d/Dhh in

Interactions between deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students and instructors in online distance education (ODE) increased exponentially during the COVID pandemic. To understand this phenomena, we conducted a comprehensive literature review about evolving ODE formats customized for deaf student's needs. This literature shows increasing multimodal, multilingual, and interactive features. Next, we examined empirical data from a collective case study implemented to better understand ODE phenomena from the perspectives of DHH students and faculty in higher education. We used 4 data collection strat

Studies on the reading acquisition of deaf children investigate the similarities and differences in the reading process between these readers and typical hearing readers. There is no consensus on the nature of the reading process among deaf readers, whether they use the same reading processing strategies as typical readers or depend on other strategies to close the gap. The present study aimed to test the types of strategies used to process written words by deaf Arabic readers with prelingual deafness, compared to their hearing peers, and to test the effectiveness of deaf readers' use of these

This research study synthesizes research on applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform and improve quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing students. Twenty studies were analyzed, spanning domains including AI-enabled captioning, interpreters, personalized tutors, social robots, and assistive apps. Key findings demonstrate emerging AI innovations show promise for enhancing communication, learning, inclusion, and independence for deaf and hard of hearing youth. Technologies such as automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, and intelligent tutoring systems inc

For science learning to be successful, students must develop attitudes toward support future engagement with challenging social issues related to science. This is especially important for increasing participation of students from underrepresented populations. This study investigated how participation in inquiry-based biology laboratory classes affected students' attitudes toward science, focusing on deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing signing students in bilingual learning environments (i.e., taught in American Sign Language and English). Analysis of reflection assignments and interviews reveal

The majority of deaf and hard of hearing students are taught in public schools. Many of these students are taught by itinerant teachers who report their primary areas of instruction are language, reading, and writing (Antia & Rivera, 2016; Luckner & Ayantoye, 2013). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine (1) how strategic and interactive writing instruction (SIWI) was implemented by three itinerant teachers of the deaf in one rural, one urban, and one affluent school district and (2) what context-specific variables impacted their writing instruction. Through observat

PURPOSE: The global prison population is rising, with over 11.5 million people in prison on any given day. Very little is known about hearing impairment in prison populations, despite prisons being a sound-centric closed environment. This study, a scoping review, aims to map and describe what is known about the situation and experiences of detained people with hearing impairment.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This study is a global scoping review. A comprehensive search confined to the English language was conducted on Web of Science, Scopus and PsycINFO with no date restriction. The final dat

Previous research has demonstrated differences in the acoustic features of crying signals between deaf and typical hearing (TH) infants. This study aims at comparing the acoustic parameters of cries of infants with different degrees of deafness versus TH infants. About 110 infants aged 6-12 months (61 TH infants, 34 infants with bilateral deafness of variable degrees and 15 infants with unilateral deafness) were enrolled in the study. Results indicated that the most important acoustic parameters to demonstrate the difference between the crying of TH infants and deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) i

BACKGROUND: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Saudi Arabia's Persons with Disabilities Rights Law guarantee the rights of individuals with disabilities to receive high-quality education. Therefore, Saudi Arabian higher education institutions have implemented programs specifically designed for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) students. According to the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (2023), quality in higher education supports students in achieving positive learning and career outcomes. One form of support is the enhancement of self-determ

BACKGROUND: The treatment of hearing impairment is rapidly evolving. Despite this, a significant number of adults with hearing impairment receive inadequate treatment or rehabilitation, resulting in functional impairment and social isolation.
OBJECTIVE: This article outlines the available options and recent advances in the treatment of hearing impairment.
DISCUSSION: Severe to profoundly hearing impaired individuals of any age, including infants and geriatric patients, are now considered as candidates for cochlear implant surgery, rather than only the profoundly hearing impaired. Until recen
