From gaps to action: Possible strategies to address challenges in the assessment of specific learning disabilities and borderline intellectual functioning under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

In India, the rights of persons with disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, aims to ensure dignity, equality, and autonomy for persons with disabilities, and sets out guidelines for the assessment and certification of various disabilities. Among the disabilities covered under the Act, several critical gaps have been consistently noted in the assessment and certification of specific learning disabilities (SLD) and intellectual impairment-related conditions. These include the rigid application of intelligence quotient (IQ) criterion in SLD assessment, as well as the difficulties in evaluating adults who

Quality of Life and Psychosocial Impact of Sport on People with Intellectual Disabilities: The Value of First-Person Discourse.

Background: The concept of quality of life (QoL) has become a fundamental focus of research involving people with intellectual disabilities (IDs). Numerous studies have explored this concept. Furthermore, incorporating the first-person perspectives of people with disabilities has become essential in contemporary research. However, no studies have rigorously examined how sport participation among people with IDs is reflected across the QoL dimensions proposed by Schalock and Verdugo. The published literature on these aspects also suggests other emerging topics analyzed. Methods: A thematic synt

Increased heart rate functions as a signal of acute distress in non-communicating persons with intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) affects approximately 1% of the population. Some patients with severe or profound ID are essentially non-communicating and therefore risk experiencing pain and distress without being able to notify their caregivers, which is a major health issue. This real-world proof of concept study aimed to see if heart rate (HR) monitoring could reveal whether non-communicating persons with ID experience acute pain or distress in their daily lives. We monitored HR in 14 non-communicating participants with ID in their daily environment to see if specific situations were associat

A brief screening instrument for emotionally unstable and dissocial personality disorder in male offenders with intellectual disabilities.

Personality disorder is prevalent among offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID), and it is associated with their risk for violence and recurrent offending behaviour. A new staff-rated instrument, the Personality Disorder Characteristics Checklist (PDCC), designed to screen for ICD-10 dissocial and emotionally unstable personality characteristics was evaluated for its reliability and validity, as applied to 129 male forensic patients with ID. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were very good. Supportive evidence for concurrent and discriminant validity was obtained in conjun

What symptoms predict the diagnosis of mania in persons with severe/profound intellectual disability in clinical practice?

BACKGROUND: While researchers have attempted to address the difficulties of diagnosing affective disorders in the intellectually disabled population, diagnosing bipolar disorder in an individual with severe intellectual disability (ID) remains a challenge. The aim of this study was to identify what symptoms can predict a diagnosis of mania in the intellectually disabled population. METHODS: Three groups of persons with ID participated in this study: (1) individuals with a bipolar diagnosis who were currently manic; (2) individuals with an Axis I diagnosis other than bipolar disorder; and (3)

[Efficacy of botulinum toxin type A against cervical dystonia and muscular hypertonia in persons with severe motor and intellectual disabilities with respiratory problems and/or dysphagia].

We administered intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in 11 persons with cervical dystonia (CD) and muscular hypertonia (MH). All patients had severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID). Furthermore, in 10 patients, SMID was accompanied by respiratory problems and/or dysphagia. Three patients received night nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation and 3 had undergone tracheotomy; 5 patients had upper respiratory problems. Because of these complications, BTX-A dose was gradually increased in those patients until the desired effect was obtained (mean last dose

Improving empathy and self-efficacy in caregivers of persons with intellectual disabilities, using m-learning (HiSense APP-ID): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A secure attachment with one or more caregivers is one of the most important predictors of cognitive development and emotional wellbeing. Persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) have extra need for secure relationships with primary caregivers but can find making connections difficult. This study aims to explore the effect of a non-invasive m-learning intervention on the empathy and self-efficacy of caregivers, in view of improving attachment relationships with persons with ID. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted to assess the efficacy of the HiSense

Potential Association of the CSMD1 Gene with Moderate Intellectual Disability, Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Traits.

CSMD1 is a gene involved in various biological processes and is highly expressed in the central nervous system, where it plays a key role in complement activity, brain circuit development, and cognitive function. It has been implicated as a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia and a causative factor in developmental epileptic encephalopathy, neurodevelopmental disorders, and intellectual disability. However, no MIM phenotype number has been assigned to CSMD1 for a specific disorder. Here, we report an individual presenting with moderate intellectual disability, anxiety disorder, obsessive-com

The impact of visual impairment on the ability to perform activities of daily living for persons with severe/profound intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: The ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) as a component of participation is one of the factors that contribute to quality of life. The ability to perform ADL for persons experiencing severe/profound intellectual disability (ID) may be reduced due to their cognitive and physical capacities. However, until recently, the impact of the significantly prevalent visual impairments on the performance of activities of daily living has not yet been revealed within this group. AIM: The purpose of this prospective cross-sectional study was to investigate the impact of visual im

A systematic review of personality disorder amongst people with intellectual disability with implications for the mental health nurse practitioner.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper reviews and summarises the literature on assessment, diagnosis and management of personality disorder in people with intellectual disability. It will proceed to argue the implications of a mental health nurse practitioner in clinical practice. BACKGROUND: Personality disorder is a potentially severe and disabling condition causing significant distress as well as presenting considerable challenges for service providers. Diagnosis in people with intellectual disability is controversial. However, it is considered that this population is at greater risk of these di

Laterality in persons with intellectual disability. I--do patients with trisomy 21 and Williams-Beuren syndrome differ from typically developing persons?

Persons with trisomy 21 (T21) and Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) have different brain abnormalities which may affect manual laterality. We assessed 45 persons with T21 and 34 with WBS (mean age 13) and 81 typically developing children (TD). Manual laterality was assessed with a fifteen-item task administered two times, and Bishop's card-reaching task. We found more left-handers in the T21 group compared to the other two groups. Inconsistent laterality was higher in the two groups with genetic diseases than in the TD group. For Bishop's test, both T21 and WBS participants were less right-orient

The prevalence of personality disorders in psychiatric outpatients with borderline intellectual functioning: Comparison with outpatients from regular mental health care and outpatients with mild intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: There is little research on the subject of personality disorder (PD) in individuals with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF). Unlike in most countries, in the Netherlands, patients with BIF are eligible for specialized mental health care. This offers the unique possibility of examining the rates of PDs in patients, who in other countries are treated relatively invisibly in regular mental health care. AIM: To compare, in a naturalistic setting, the frequency of PD diagnoses in outpatients with BIF with outpatients from regular mental health care and outpatients with mild ID.

Reported Barriers and Facilitators for Autistic Individuals, Persons with Other Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and Their Caregivers to Receive the COVID-19 Vaccine: A Pilot Study.

Autistic individuals and persons with other intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) may experience challenges in social engagement, sensory processing, and behavior rigidity. This population is more likely to face barriers to successful preventative healthcare, including vaccines, compared to neurotypical peers. Autistic individuals and persons with other IDD may be at greater risk for COVID-19 infection due to sensory dysregulation that interferes with mitigation such as wearing masks, and challenges in social communication that impose difficulties in understanding and adhering to pr
