Review of Navigation Assistive Tools and Technologies for the Visually Impaired.

The visually impaired suffer greatly while moving from one place to another. They face challenges in going outdoors and in protecting themselves from moving and stationary objects, and they also lack confidence due to restricted mobility. Due to the recent rapid rise in the number of visually impaired persons, the development of assistive devices has emerged as a significant research field. This review study introduces several techniques to help the visually impaired with their mobility and presents the state-of-the-art of recent assistive technologies that facilitate their everyday life. It a

The global burden of trachoma: a review.

Trachoma is the commonest infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Recurrent infection of the ocular surface by Chlamydia trachomatis, the causative agent, leads to inturning of the eyelashes (trichiasis) and blinding corneal opacification. Trachoma is endemic in more than 50 countries. It is currently estimated that there are about 1.3 million people blind from the disease and a further 8.2 million have trichiasis. Several estimates for the burden of disease from trachoma have been made, giving quite variable results. The variation is partly because different prevalence data have been used an

Enhancing gesture recognition for assisting visually impaired persons using deep learning in an IoT environment-based improved snake optimisation algorithm.

Gesture recognition (GR) is an emerging and wide-ranging area of research. GR is extensively applied in sign language, Immersive game technology, and other computer interfaces, among others. People with visual impairments face challenges in completing tasks, including navigating environments, using technologies, and engaging in social interactions. Additionally, people face challenges in balancing their individuality with the need for protection in their day-to-day work. It is likely to recognize the communication of visually challenged and deaf people by recording their speech, and in compari

A tactile approach to introduce the skin autoimmune disease psoriasis to the general public and the vision-impaired community.

Scientific outreach activities play an important role in disseminating knowledge, connecting the general public to research and breaking down scientific skepticism barriers. However, the vision-impaired community is often disadvantaged when the most common audio-visual approach of scientific communication is applied. Here we integrated tactile clues in the scientific communication of immune processes involved in the autoimmune skin disease psoriasis. We fostered the involvement of the vision-impaired community through interactive experiences, including tactile scientific origami art, a haptic

The application of computer vision to visual prosthesis.

A visual prosthesis is an auxiliary device for patients with blinding diseases that cannot be treated with conventional surgery or drugs. It converts captured images into corresponding electrical stimulation patterns, according to which phosphenes are generated through the action of internal electrodes on the visual pathway to form visual perception. However, due to some restrictions such as the few implantable electrodes that the biological tissue can accommodate, the induced perception is far from ideal. Therefore, an important issue in visual prosthesis research is how to detect and present

StereoPilot: A Wearable Target Location System for Blind and Visually Impaired Using Spatial Audio Rendering.

Vision loss severely impacts object recognition and spatial cognition for limited vision individuals. It is a challenge to compensate for this using other sensory modalities, such as touch or hearing. This paper introduces StereoPilot, a wearable target location system to facilitate the spatial cognition of BVI. Through wearing a head-mounted RGB-D camera, the 3D spatial information of the environment is measured and processed into navigation cues. Leveraging spatial audio rendering (SAR) technology, it allows the navigation cues to be transmitted in a type of 3D sound from which the sound ori

EXCLUSION LEARNING AND EMERGENT SYMBOLIC CATEGORY FORMATION IN INDIVIDUALS WITH SEVERE LANGUAGE IMPAIRMENTS AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES.

We evaluated formation of simple symbolic categories from initial learning of specific dictated word-picture relations through emergence of untaught or derived relations. Participants were 10 individuals with severe intellectual and language limitations. Three experimental categories were constructed, each containing 1 spoken word (Set A), 1 photograph (Set B), and 1 visual-graphic "lexigram" (Set C). Exclusion-based learning procedures were used to teach first the 3 auditory-visual relations (A-B relations) and then the 3 visual-visual relations (B-C relations) for each category. Seven partic

Visual impairments in people with severe and profound multiple disabilities: an inventory of visual functioning.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of visual impairments in people with severe and profound multiple disabilities (SPMD) is the subject of considerable debate and is difficult to assess. METHODS: In a typical Dutch care organization, all clients with SPMD (n = 76) participated in the study and specific instruments adapted to these clients (requiring a minimum of cooperation) were used to measure visual acuity, the visual field, binocular vision, contrast sensitivity, refractive errors and visual functioning behaviour. RESULTS: We found an unexpected 92% of clients with SPMD to have visual impairment

Increasing Self-Regulation and Classroom Participation of a Child Who Is Deafblind.

Self-regulation has been identified as essential to school success. However, for a variety of reasons, its development may be compromised in children and youth who are deafblind. A single-case multiple-baseline study of a child who was deafblind examined the effects of three groups of evidence-based interventions on variables thought to be associated with self-regulation. The dependent variables were (a) frequency and duration of behaviors thought to indicate dysregulation, (b) active participation in school activities, and (c) time from onset of behaviors indicating dysregulation until achiev
