Do Metaphors in Health Messages Work? Exploring Emotional and Cognitive Factors.

Health communicators publicize messages that use metaphors to compare abstract health-related concepts to concrete concepts in other domains. Such messages aim to change health attitudes and behavior, but do they work? According to Conceptual Metaphor Theory, metaphors can shape thought by transferring personalized knowledge of a concrete concept to understand and relate to an abstraction, despite their superficial differences. The authors extend this claim to specify emotional and cognitive factors potentially moderating the productivity (and counter-productivity) of metaphoric health message

The persuasiveness of different sources of information on the decision to vaccinate. A cross-sectional study in Germany during the pandemic at the turn of the year 2021/2022.

Health information about vaccinations is communicated via various sources of information and is crucial for vaccination decisions. Information sources such as interpersonal sources, traditional print and digital media as well as social media offer information about the risks and benefits of vaccination. During health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic was, some information sources provide hanging or contradictory information, alongside with misinformation and disinformation. Little is known about the relationship between the reported persuasiveness of different sources of information for ind

The Effect of Social Media Influencer Warranting Cues on Intentions to Use Non-Hormonal Contraception.

Young women increasingly get sexual health information from social media influencers, who use persuasive communication and can alter attitudes, intentions, and behaviors. Contraception is a commonly discussed health topic among influencers on social media. Previous research suggests that influencers negatively frame and encourage the discontinuation of hormonal contraception. At the same time, influencers also encourage the uptake of less effective non-hormonal options, such as fertility awareness-based methods. Though descriptive content analysis work details these patterns in influencer cont

Word Choice Affects Social Judgments: Relational Messages Containing Low-Frequency Words Get Low Evaluations.

Prior research found a word complexity effect: Authors who use complex words are less favorably received when writing academic essays, business letters, and other relatively formal communications. The present study tested if word choice affects evaluations of messages between friends (Experiments 1-2) and spoken messages (Experiment 2). Three widespread dimensions of social judgments were studied - namely, persuasiveness, competence, and sincerity. Participants read/heard messages that varied (between-participants) by ordinary versus low-frequency words (sad vs. forlorn). Messages containing l

Improving persuasive writing skills of high school students with specific learning disabilities: STOP and DARE strategy.

Writing skills, crucial for various forms of expression, depend on effective planning and self-regulation. Competent writers emphasise pre-writing activities and self-regulation nevertheless students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) often struggle with writing, impacting their academic achievement. This study explored the efficacy of the STOP and DARE strategy, grounded in the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) model, for teaching persuasive writing to four high school students diagnosed with SLD. The study employed a multiple probe across subjects design to assess the impact

Persuasive Technology in an mHealth App Designed for Pelvic Floor Muscle Training Among Women: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is one of the first-line treatments for stress urinary incontinence among pregnant women. Mobile health (mHealth) technology is potentially effective for delivering PFMT to pregnant women. Persuasive technology in the development of such mobile apps may facilitate behavior change by improving adherence to the exercises. The Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) model is potentially useful in selecting the appropriate interventions to be incorporated into the apps. OBJECTIVE: This review of mHealth apps for PFMT aims to describ

The use of advertising appeals in breast cancer detection messages: a web content analysis.

We explored the use of different advertising appeals in breast cancer detection messages. We analyzed the extent to which emotional appeals were applied in advertisements that promoted two forms of breast cancer detection behaviors: breast self-examination (BSE) and mammographic screening. Findings of a content analysis of 456 breast cancer-related advertisements gathered in February 2016 indicated that textual fear appeals, humor appeals and erotic appeals were more likely to be featured in BSE-promoting advertisements than in breast cancer-related advertisements with other message purposes.

Can Self-Persuasion Reduce Hostile Attribution Bias in Young Children?

Two experiments tested an intervention approach to reduce young children's hostile attribution bias and aggression: self-persuasion. Children with high levels of hostile attribution bias recorded a video-message advocating to peers why story characters who caused a negative outcome may have had nonhostile intentions (self-persuasion condition), or they simply described the stories (control condition). Before and after the manipulation, hostile attribution bias was assessed using vignettes of ambiguous provocations. Study 1 (n = 83, age 4-8) showed that self-persuasion reduced children's hostil

Facilitating responsible gambling: the relative effectiveness of education-based animation and monetary limit setting pop-up messages among electronic gaming machine players.

Although most gamblers set a monetary limit on their play, many exceed this limit--an antecedent of problematic gambling. Responsible gambling tools may assist players to gamble within their means. Historically, however, the impact of such tools has been assessed in isolation. In the current research, two responsible gambling tools that target adherence to a monetary limit were assessed among 72 electronic gaming machine (EGM) players. Participants watched an educational animation explaining how EGMs work (or a neutral video) and then played an EGM in a virtual reality environment. All partici

Exploring the Roles of Interpersonal Conversations and Received Social Support in the Persuasiveness of Messages Informed by the Extended Parallel Process Model.

Message design and message effects theories have been criticized for ignoring the influences of interpersonal, social, and contextual factors. To address this gap, the current study explores how interpersonal conversations and received social support may influence the persuasiveness of messages informed by the extended parallel process model (EPPM). In a longitudinal experiment, participants (n = 750) were randomly assigned to watch an EPPM-informed video that promotes healthy sleep behaviors or a control video. We then encouraged half of the participants to initiate conversations and seek soc

How to leverage social media to build confidence in COVID-19 vaccines: findings and lessons learned from nationwide campaigns in four countries.

Vaccine hesitancy remains a global health challenge, undermining gains in routine immunization coverage and the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. Effective, responsive health communication is needed to counter 'infodemics' and strengthen public trust in vaccination. Evidence on how to design effective digital campaigns to strengthen vaccine demand is limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Results from this four-country study demonstrate a process for the design and randomized controlled testing of evidence-based, context-driven persuasive messaging to strengthen vaccin

Why science must speak differently.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the complexities surrounding public trust in science, particularly in the context of overwhelming data and political polarization. The call to “trust the science” emerged as both a symbol of confidence and a source of public tension, exposing the challenges in communicating scientific uncertainty, data interpretation, and expertise. This paper examines the critical role of communication in shaping public perceptions of science, emphasizing the need for epistemic humility and transparency in the face of uncertainty. While data availability increased, the real c

Evidence-based tailoring of behavior-change campaigns: increasing fluoride-free water consumption in rural Ethiopia with persuasion.

Two hundred million people worldwide are at risk of developing dental and skeletal fluorosis due to excessive fluoride uptake from their water. Since medical treatment of the disease is difficult and mostly ineffective, preventing fluoride uptake is crucial. In the Ethiopian Rift Valley, a fluoride-removal community filter was installed. Despite having access to a fluoride filter, the community used the filter sparingly. During a baseline assessment, 173 face-to-face interviews were conducted to identify psychological factors that influence fluoride-free water consumption. Based on the results

Signal competition in AI-generated retail advertising: Credibility, eeriness, and trust formation.

Artificial intelligence generated advertising is widely adopted in retailing and consumer services, yet its effects on trust, engagement, and purchase intention remain theoretically inconsistent. This study addresses this anomaly by reconceptualising advertising effectiveness under algorithmic authorship as a process of signal resolution rather than additive persuasion. Drawing on signalling theory and advertising value theory, the study specifies advertising value as a formative signal system composed of informativeness, entertainment, and executional credibility, which simultaneously activat

Bridging the Human-AI preference gap: A persuasion-oriented tripartite framework.

The remarkable performance of artificial intelligence (AI) systems on a wide variety of complex tasks has fueled its rapid adoption in recent years. Yet, many individuals still exhibit a human-AI preference gap, such that they prefer human-generated over AI-generated outputs and follow recommendations made by generative AI (GenAI) less than human advice. We conceptualize the rejection of a superior AI system in favor of an inferior human as a persuasion failure that necessitates psychological rather than technological resolution. Recent research has identified various interventions that compre

Perspectives of U.S. harm reduction advocates on persuasive message strategies.

BACKGROUND: The messages used to communicate about harm reduction are critical in garnering public support for adoption of harm reduction interventions. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of harm reduction interventions at reducing overdose deaths and disease transmission, the USA has been slow to adopt harm reduction to scale. Implementation of evidence-based interventions has been hindered by a historical framing of drug use as a moral failure and related stigmatizing attitudes among the public toward people who use drugs. Understanding how professional harm reduction advocates communica

Message development for a communication campaign to support health warning labels on cigars: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Communication campaigns for health warning labels (HWLs) are an evidence-based strategy to reduce tobacco use. No research has examined campaign messages to support graphic HWLs for little cigars and cigarillos (LCCs). METHODS: We developed four message types for graphic LCC HWLs: (1) Explanatory (2) Testimonial (3) Inquisitive and (4) Recommendation, depicting colon, lung, and esophageal cancer. Online focus groups with Black and White young adults (18-25 years old) who reported current LCC use were conducted. Participants were shown graphic HWLs on LCCs and then four message typ

Promoting stair climbing in public-access settings: an audit of intervention opportunities in England.

OBJECTIVE: Introducing message prompts at the 'point-of-choice' (POC) between stairs and escalators increases stair choice in 'public-access' settings (e.g. malls). For nationwide campaigns, plentiful POCs appear needed. We audited the availability of POCs in public-access settings across England. METHODS: Boundaries for 25 urban areas (population=6,829,874) were verified using Ordinance Survey maps, which showed all airports and train/tram stations. Malls and bus stations were identified from commercial listings and local authority web-pages. From September 2010-March 2011 two investigators

If brands are built over years, why are they managed over quarters?

Brands are on the wane. Many consumer-goods companies blame the big-box discount retailers, but the Wharton School's Leonard Lodish and the Fuqua School's Carl Mela have a different explanation. Their research suggests that companies have damaged their brands by investing too much in short-term price promotions and too little in long-term brand building. To rescue their brands and increase profitability, corporate managers must arm themselves with long-term measures of brand performance and use them to make smarter marketing decisions. Several factors explain the short-sightedness of brand man
