Arthrobotrys thaumasia and A. musiformis (Fungi: Orbiliales) as Natural Potential Enemies of Haemonchus contortus (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae).

Haemonchus contortus (Hc) is a parasitic nematode affecting sheep. Arthrobotrys is a group of nematophagous fungi (NF) that capture nematodes with specialized traps. This study evaluated the in vitro predatory ability of Arthrobotrys thaumasia (At) and A. musiformis (Am), as well as the nematocidal activity of their liquid culture filtrates against Hc. NF isolates were obtained by sprinkling soil onto agar plates containing nematodes. Isolates were identified morphologically and molecularly. The predatory activity (PA) was tested on agar plates inoculated with nematodes and fungi; plates inocu

Bioprospection of Metschnikowia pulcherrima as biocontrol agents against gray mold on grapes with their potential modes of action.

Gray mold in grapes during the postharvest period is primarily caused by Botrytis cinerea, with synthetic fungicides being the main method of control. Antagonistic yeasts offer a viable alternative to conventional fungicides for the management of pathogens post-harvest. The study analyzed the effectiveness of 14 Metschnikowia pulcherrima yeast strains against gray mold in grapes and examined their potential mechanisms of action. In vitro analyses demonstrated that all evaluated yeast strains (100 μL, 1 × 104 CFU/mL) significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of B. cinerea, with inhibition rat

Evaluating the efficacy and molecular mechanisms of the effects of Trichoderma harzianum T15 against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

BACKGROUND: Pine wilt disease, caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, devastates pine ecosystems. As a well-known biocontrol fungus, Trichoderma harzianum has been shown to exhibit broad-spectrum antagonistic effects against multiple pathogens and nematodes. In this study, we employed morphological, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and RNA-sequencing analyses to systematically evaluate its efficacy against Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. These findings clarify the biocontrol potential of T. harzianum and support developing new agents

Biocontrol mechanisms, application potential, and challenges of Burkholderia spp. in plant fungal disease management.

Fungal diseases present significant challenges to global agriculture, causing substantial economic losses and threatening food safety. Although synthetic fungicides have long served as the cornerstone of plant disease management, growing concerns regarding their environmental toxicity, non-target effects, and emergence of resistant pathogens have motivated the search for sustainable alternatives. Burkholderia spp. have attracted attention as promising biocontrol agents (BCAs) due to their production of diverse bioactive secondary metabolites (for example, occidiofungin, pyoluteorin, pyrrolnitr

Biological control of the Asian chestnut gall wasp in Portugal: Insights from a mathematical model.

In recent years, the Asian gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus has invaded chestnut trees and significantly affected the Portuguese chestnut production. Studies in other countries, such as Japan or Italy, have shown that the parasitoid Torymus sinensis can successfully achieve biological control of D. kuriphilus. Mathematical models help us to understand the dynamics of the interaction between the pest D. kuriphilus and its parasitoid T. sinensis and, consequently, they can help to implement measures that enhance crop pest management. In this work, the evolution of the density of D. kuriphilus and

Fate of fungal biocontrol agents and their non-target effects on the native cultivable mycobiota in strawberry agroecosystems.

Fungal biocontrol agents (BCAs) are increasingly used in plant protection, but information about their establishment and fate as well as non-target effects under field conditions is yet limited, hampering the development of efficient and safe field application strategies. In field and semi-field experiments with strawberry, the fate of the fungal BCAs Trichoderma harzianum (strain T22), Clonostachys rosea (strain IK726) and Ulocladium atrum (strain 302), and their non-target effects on the native cultivable strawberry mycobiota on ripe berries was investigated. In two strawberry fields, T. har

Control of Pecan Weevil With Microbial Biopesticides.

The pecan weevil, Curculio caryae (Horn) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key pest of pecans Carya illinoinensis ([Wangenh.] K. Koch) (Fagales: Juglandaceae). Control recommendations rely on broad spectrum chemical insecticides. Due to regulatory and environmental concerns, effective alternatives for C. caryae control must be sought for pecan production in conventional and organic systems. We explored the use of microbial biopesticides for control of C. caryae in Georgia pecan orchards. Three experiments were conducted. The first investigated an integrated microbial control approach in an org

Estimating costs of sea lice control strategy in Norway.

This paper explores the costs of sea lice control strategies associated with salmon aquaculture at a farm level in Norway. Diseases can cause reduction in growth, low feed efficiency and market prices, increasing mortality rates, and expenditures on prevention and treatment measures. Aquaculture farms suffer the most direct and immediate economic losses from diseases. The goal of a control strategy is to minimize the total disease costs, including biological losses, and treatment costs while to maximize overall profit. Prevention and control strategies are required to eliminate or minimize the

Effects of Chlorella sorokiniana KU.B2 microalga on the development of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae.

Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) is a significant vector of lymphatic filariasis and arboviruses. Current control strategies rely heavily on chemical insecticides, highlighting the need for alternative and environmentally sustainable approaches. This study evaluated the effects of the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana KU.B2 on the development of Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae. Larvae were reared on microalgal-rabbit food diets: a control (100% rabbit food) and four treatments with increasing proportions of C. sorokiniana suspension (25 microalgae [Al], 50Al, 75Al, and 100Al). Additional rabbit food-onl

Effectiveness of natural predators, microbial bioinsecticides, and plant-based bioinsecticides to reduce mosquito-borne disease burden: a systematic review.

Mosquito-borne diseases are a major public health burden given the limited pharmacological options. While the adverse effects of synthetic insecticides are well documented, it is necessary to assess whether environmentally friendly interventions are effective for disease control. Although natural predators, microbial bioinsecticides and plant-based bioinsecticides have gained attention for their specificity and reduced environmental impact, no comprehensive synthesis of evidence on their effectiveness in reducing disease burden has been conducted, highlighting the need for this review. Developing recombinant bacteria for control of mosquito larvae.

Genetic engineering techniques have been used to significantly improve mosquito larvicides based on the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) subsp. israelensis (Bti) and Bacillus sphaericus (Bs). These new larvicides hold excellent promise for providing better and more cost-effective control of nuisance mosquitoes and vectors of important diseases, including the anopheline vectors of malaria and culicine vectors responsible for filariasis and viral encephalitides. The toxicity of Bti and Bs is due primarily to endotoxin proteins produced during sporulation. After ingestion by larvae, these are

Biocontrol potential of Metarhizium spp. against Myzus persicae and beet mild yellowing virus in the post-neonicotinoid era.

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are promising biocontrol agents that can also function as plant endophytes, mediating interactions within plant-insect-pathogen systems. Here, we evaluated four EPF isolates, two endemic (Metarhizium brunneum strain GxABT-2 and Metarhizium majus strain GxABT-3) and two reference strains (M. brunneum ARSEF4556 and V275), for their efficacy against the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) and their ability to limit beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV) transmission. Concentration-dependent bioassays assessed aphid mortality, fecundity, and post-mortem fungal development, wh

In vitro isolation and identification of entomopathogenic fungus (Metarhizium pinghaense) and assessment of its virulence against whiteflies and aphids.

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Aphis gossypii (Glover) are two notorious pests of vegetables grown in greenhouses and their outbreaks can be devastating and cause a significant loss in yield and quality. The prevail and effective control of the pests mainly relies on frequent applications of pesticides, which is likely to negatively impact environments and human health through residue, resurgence, and resistance. To avoid negative "3R" issues brought forth by chemicals, entomopathogenic fungus such as Metarhizium sp. are widely used as biocontrol agents even if they are different in their popu

Differential pathogenicity of heterologous nucleopolyhedroviruses on Spodoptera frugiperda corresponds to modulated expression of immune-response-related genes.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a notorious invasive pest wreaking havoc on various crops globally. Nucleopolyhedroviruses (NPVs) are viral pathogens that specially target lepidopteran pests. However, the homologous virus, Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV), has not been commercialized in China. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying heterologous virus-host interactions can inform the design of virus-based insecticides for controlling S. frugiperda. The pathogenicity of the four heterologous NPVs o
