Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an acute viral disease of small ruminants. The disease was first reported in Tanzania in 2008 when it was confined to the Northern Zone districts bordering Kenya. The present study was carried out to confirm the presence of PPR virus (PPRV) in Tanzania and to establish their phylogenetic relationships. Samples (oculonasal swabs, tissues and whole blood) were obtained from live goats with clinical presentation suggestive of PPR and goats that died naturally in Ngorongoro (Northern Tanzania) and Mvomero (Eastern Tanzania) districts. The clinical signs observed

Ethiopia aims to eradicate peste des petits ruminants (PPR) by 2027 through a risk-based vaccination strategy (RBVS); however, outbreaks continue to occur. This cross-sectional study (January–May 2024) evaluated RBVS performance by assessing flock- and maternal-level antibody immunity, providing field-based evidence to inform PPR control and eradication efforts. A total of 594 serum samples were collected using simple random sampling to assess flock (n = 508) and maternal (n = 86) antibody immunity. All samples were tested for PPRV antibodies using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent ass

In border regions where small ruminants are lifelines, peste des petits ruminants (PPR) remains a silent killer for the small ruminants, undermining food security and rural economies. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between June 2023 and February 2025 in Comilla, Kushtia, Meherpur and Panchagarh districts of Bangladesh. A total of 389 goat blood samples were collected and performed competitive ELISA for peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) antibody detection. Among the unvaccinated goats 39.34% (120/305) were found to be seropositive, whereas 48.8% (41/84) was observed in the vaccina

To achieve rapid, accurate, and quantitative detection of peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), we aligned the available PPRV genomic sequences, screened for conserved regions, and designed specific primers and probes accordingly. An RT-droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR) method was established, and a series of reaction conditions were optimized. Subsequently, the specificity, sensitivity, and repeatability of the method were subsequently evaluated. The results demonstrated that the RT-ddPCR method exhibited good specificity, with positive results obtained exclusively for PPRV and negative resul

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) characterized by fever, sore mouth, conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, and pneumonia, is an acute, highly contagious viral disease of sheep and goats. The role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in PPRV infection has not been explored to date. In this study, the transcriptome profiles of virulent Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infected goat tissues - lung and spleen were analyzed to identify the role of lncRNAs in PPRV infection. A total of 13,928 lncRNA transcripts were identified, out of which 170 were known lncRNAs. Intergenic lncRNAs (7625) formed the

Peste des petits ruminants is a highly contagious acute or subacute disease of small ruminants caused by the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), and it is responsible for significant economic losses in animal husbandry. Vaccination represents the most effective means of controlling this disease, with virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines offering promising vaccine candidates. In this study, a PPRV VLP-based vaccine was developed using a baculovirus expression system, allowing for the simultaneous expression of the PPRV matrix (M), hemagglutinin (H), fusion (F) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins i

Sheep and goat pox, peste des petits ruminants and Rift Valley fever are important diseases of small ruminant livestock. Sheep and goat pox, along with peste des petits ruminants, are endemic throughout most of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Whereas Rift Valley fever is endemic in Africa, outbreaks in the Middle East have been reported over the past decade, including the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia is a major importer of livestock, and understanding the prevalence of these viral infections would be useful for disease control. In this study, sera from sheep and goats were collected from

The ability of morbilliviruses to infect antigen-presenting cells (APCs) plays a major role in infection outcome, because these cells transport peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) from the respiratory tract to the lymph nodes before spreading to lymphoid and epithelial tissues. This study used two cell models-monocyte-derived macrophages (MoMs) and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs)-from three host species (goat, sheep, and cattle) to evaluate the differential ability of APCs to be infected by two strains of PPRV with contrasting virulence in goats. Infection was analyzed using flow

The present study aimed to investigate the episodes of per-acute mortality due to peste des petits ruminants (PPR) that resulted in the death of 30 animals of different species of cervids, namely, barking deer, four-horned antelope, hog deer, thamin, and mouse deer in the State Zoo of Assam, a northeastern state of India. The affected animals showed no to limited clinical signs. However, the necropsy and histopathological findings were highly suggestive of PPR virus (PPRV) infection observed in domestic small ruminants. Representative tissue samples were screened for the presence of PPRV along

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is one of the most contagious and fatal diseases of small ruminants in the world and is classified as a category A epidemic disease. It is the target of a global eradication campaign led by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The PPR live attenuated vaccine is currently the most widely used and approved vaccine, but the use of this vaccine interferes with the serological testing of the PPR elimination program, and there is a potential safety risk. Viral vector vaccines are one of the m

INTRODUCTION: Despite causing one of the most dreaded diseases of small ruminants, relatively little is known about the pathogenic events, antigen distribution and the cells responsible for the uptake and transmission of peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV) during primitive stages of infection.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed at deciphering the sequential tissue tropism, pathological events and putative role of M2c macrophages during incubatory, prodromal and invasive stages of PPRV infection.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 10 goats were sequentially sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days post-infection (dpi

Understanding the evolution of viral pathogens is critical to being able to define how viruses emerge within different landscapes. Host susceptibility, which is spread between different species and is a contributing factor to the subsequent epidemiology of a disease, is defined by virus detection and subsequent characterization. Peste des petits ruminants virus is a plague of small ruminant species that is a considerable burden to the development of sustainable agriculture across Africa and much of Asia. The virus has also had a significant impact on populations of endangered species in recent

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus of the Morbillivirus genus. The current PPR eradication effort relies mainly on the implementation of massive vaccination campaigns. One of the most widely used PPR vaccines is the Nigeria 75/1 strain obtained after attenuation by 75 serial passages of the wild type isolate in cell cultures. Here we use high throughput deep sequencing of the historical passages that led to the Nigeria 75/1 attenuated strain to understand the evolution of PPRV attenuation and to assess the risk of reversal in different cell types.

Peste des petits ruminanats virus (PPRV), a morbillivirus causes an acute, highly contagious disease - peste des petits ruminants (PPR), affecting goats and sheep. Sungri/96 vaccine strain is widely used for mass vaccination programs in India against PPR and is considered the most potent vaccine providing long-term immunity. However, occurrence of outbreaks due to emerging PPR viruses may be a challenge. In this study, the temporal dynamics of immune response in goat peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) infected with Sungri/96 vaccine virus was investigated by transcriptome analysis. Inf

The authors report on an outbreak of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) among sheep and goats in the Province of Gujarat, India. Clinical signs observed during outbreaks were typical of PPR. Predominant signs were severe diarrhoea, dyspnoea, mucopurulent discharge from the eyes and nose, erosive rhinitis, necrotic ulcers in the mouth, on the dental pad, tongue, upper and lower lips, fever and depression. Common post-mortem findings included congestion, red hepatisation, raised patches of emphysema in the lungs, haemorrhages and froth exudates in the trachea, severe enteritis and streaks of haemo

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) are a highly contagious viral disease that causes substantial morbidity, mortality, and economic losses in Ethiopian small ruminants. Despite ongoing efforts to eradicate PPR by 2027, 554 outbreaks were reported nationwide between 2018 and 2022. This cross-sectional study, conducted from January to May 2024, estimated the seroprevalence of PPR virus (PPRV) and identified associated risk factors among nonvaccinated small ruminants in six districts of North Shewa zone using competitive ELISA (C-ELISA).
RESULTS: Of the 324 serum samples tested, 182 we

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is endemic in Zambia, while peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV) has not been detected. This study screened 962 farmed goats and 237 small ruminants at informal markets for PPRV antibodies using c-ELISA. A subset (n = 29) was re-analysed with virus neutralisation assays (VNA) for antibodies to PPRV and CDV due to cross-reactivity concerns. c-ELISA indicated 6.44% PPRV seroprevalence on farms and 3.80% at markets. While VNA detected no PPRV antibodies, 45% (13/29) tested positive for CDV, possibly suggesting cross-reactivity. Given the study's limitations, furthe

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is recognized as one of the most economically significant transboundary pathogens affecting small ruminants. However, despite the increasing availability of whole-genome sequences, comprehensive global analyses integrating evolutionary history, phylogeography, and genome-wide lineage-defining molecular markers remain limited. This study investigated the global genomic diversity, evolutionary history, and molecular characteristics of PPRV using whole-genome sequences. A total of 212 temporally informative whole-genome sequences, retrieved from GenBank (be

Background and Aim: Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) has recently become one of the most incidence and threatening viral diseases of sheep in Iraq, which affected notion economy through prevalence and mortality rates. Although there is wide availability of global data on epidemiology, diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment of this disease, crucial specific available information with extended prevalence in Iraq still requires specific research to cope. Therefore, this study investigates molecular phylogeny of PPR in sheep during outbreak and detection the histological and immunohistochemical ch
