High pesticide exposures events, pesticide poisoning, and shingles: A medicare-linked study of pesticide applicators in the agricultural health study.

OBJECTIVES: Self-reported shingles was associated with history of high pesticide exposure events (HPEE) in licensed pesticide applicators aged >60 years in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS). In the current study, using AHS-linked Medicare claims data, we examined incident shingles in relation to pesticide-related illness and pesticide poisoning, as well as HPEE. METHODS: We studied 22,753 licensed private pesticide applicators (97% white males, enrolled in the AHS 1993-97), aged ≥66 years with >12 consecutive months of Medicare fee-for-service hospital and outpatient coverage between 1999 a

Surveys to assess the amount of pesticide in wool and the use of pesticides by woolgrowers in Queensland.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the amounts of pesticide residue in wool grown in Queensland between 1997 and 1999, and to describe the use of pesticides for the control of lice infestations and blowfly strike in Queensland sheep flocks. DESIGN: Pesticide residues were measured in a random sample of wool from Queensland clips offered for sale during 1998 and 1999. Information on pesticide use was obtained from a trace-back postal survey. PROCEDURE: Samples taken from wool lots were tested for the presence and amount of organophosphorus (OP), synthetic pyrethroid (SP) and insect growth regulator pestic

Agricultural Pesticides and Shingles Risk in a Prospective Cohort of Licensed Pesticide Applicators.

BACKGROUND: Some pesticides are immunotoxic and have been associated with an increased risk of immune-mediated diseases. The risk of shingles, the clinical reactivation of varicella-zoster virus, increases with aging and immunosuppression; little is known about its associations with pesticides. OBJECTIVE: We examined the use of agricultural pesticides in relation to incident shingles in a prospective cohort of licensed pesticide applicators. METHODS: The study sample included 12,820 (97% male) farmers (enrolled in 1993-1997 in North Carolina and Iowa), who were followed for a median of 12 y

Pesticidal Activity of Nanostructured Metal Oxides for Generation of Alternative Pesticide Formulations.

Herein, nanostructured metal oxides of essential soil nutrient elements (i.e., CuO and CaO) with definite shape and size were simply synthesized, and their pesticidal activities against cotton leafworm ( Spodoptera littoralis) were explored for the first time. These metal oxide nanostructures represented novel economic and ecofriendly nanopesticides for sustainable plant protection and might boost the nutrient content of soil. The results showed that CuO nanoparticles (NPs) and CaO NPs exhibited potential entomotoxic effects against S. littoralis. Interestingly, CuO NPs exhibited fast entomoto

Airborne concentrations of organophosphorus pesticides in Korean pesticide manufacturing/formulation workplaces.

Pesticide manufacturing/formulation workers rather than farmers or applicators or people living with them are primarily exposed to organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). However, airborne concentrations in the workplace have rarely been determined. A total of 121 air samples (personal or area sampling) were collected at 4 factories where chlorpyrifos, EPN, parathion, and phorate, were manufactured/formulated from March through July, 2007-2008. Samples were collected by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) method and were analyzed by GC-MS. The geometric mean (GM) level

Recent developments in fluorine-containing pesticides.

To ensure ongoing sustainability, the modern agrochemical industry is faced with enormous challenges. These arise from provision of high-quality food to increasing water use and environmental impact as well as a growing world population. The loss of previous agrochemicals due to consumer perception, changing grower needs and ever-changing regulatory requirements is higher than the number of active ingredients that are being introduced into the crop protection market. Therefore, the development of novel agrochemicals is essential to provide improved efficacy and environmental profiles. In this

The perfect threat: Pesticides and vultures.

Probably the most important threat currently affecting vultures worldwide is exposure to pesticides, both accidentally and through deliberate abuse. This is of special concern since around 70% of vulture species are threatened by human activities. However, information about this threat is sparse and geographically biased. We compiled existing knowledge about pesticide exposure in vulture species globally, providing unifying criteria to mitigate this problem with a joint global effort. Most information available about accidental exposure to pesticides in vultures is related to organochlorine pe

Latest generation of halogen-containing pesticides.

Agriculture is confronted with enormous challenges, from production of enough high-quality food to water use, environmental impacts and issues combined with a continually growing world population. Modern agricultural chemistry has to support farmers by providing innovative agrichemicals, used in applied agriculture. In this context, the introduction of halogen atoms into an active ingredient is still an important tool to modulate the properties of new crop protection compounds. Since 2010, around 96% of the launched products (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides/acaricides and nematicides) con

P-Glycoprotein Transport of Neurotoxic Pesticides.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) has been associated with a number of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, although the mechanisms remain unclear. Altered transport of neurotoxic pesticides has been proposed in Parkinson's disease, but it is unknown whether these pesticides are P-gp substrates. We used three in vitro transport models, stimulation of ATPase activity, xenobiotic-induced cytotoxicity, and inhibition of rhodamine-123 efflux, to evaluate P-gp transport of diazinon, dieldrin, endosulfan, ivermectin, maneb, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP(+)), and rotenone. Pesticides, microglial NOX2, and Parkinson's disease.

Accumulating evidence indicates that pesticide exposure is associated with an increased risk for developing Parkinson's disease (PD). Several pesticides known to damage dopaminergic (DA) neurons, such as paraquat, rotenone, lindane, and dieldrin also demonstrate the ability to activate microglia, the resident innate immune cell in the brain. While each of these environmental toxicants may impact microglia through unique mechanisms, they all appear to converge on a common final pathway of microglial activation: NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) activation. This review will detail the role of microglia in

Pesticides and hypospadias: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To use meta-analytic techniques to synthesize the findings of the current body of published literature regarding the risk of hypospadias resulting from parental exposure to pesticides. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of Pub Med for original research published in English from January 1966 through March 2008 identified 552 studies, 90 of which were reviewed in detail. Nine studies met all study inclusion criteria. Two reviewers independently abstracted data from each included study. Any disagreements were resolved by consensus. Pooled risk ratios (PRRs) and confidence intervals (CIs)

Acute symptoms following work with pesticides.

BACKGROUND: Serious accidental poisoning by pesticides is rare in the UK, but more minor pesticide-related illness may be under-reported. Anecdotally, use of sheep dip has been linked with flu-like symptoms. AIM: To explore the frequency, nature and determinants of acute symptoms following work with pesticides. METHODS: A postal survey of men in three rural areas of England and Wales provided data on occupational use of five categories of pesticide, occurrence of 12 specified symptoms within 48 h of using pesticides and tendency to somatize. Risk factors for pesticide-related symptoms were a

Parkinson's disease, pesticides and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Selective nigral degeneration with inclusion formation provoked by systemic administration of the herbicide rotenone, through inhibition of complex I, raises the question of pesticide exposure and environmental factors in general, as a cause of Parkinson's disease (PD). Toxin-induced complex I inhibition probably represents one of many potential causes of PD, but it alerts us to the dangers of such substances in the environment and the need to identify genetically susceptible populations. When vulnerable individuals become known, perhaps they should stay out of the garden.

Contact sensitization by pesticides in farmers.

30 farmers with contact dermatitis and 20 controls were patch tested with a series of locally used pesticides. Allergic reactions to 1 or more pesticides were seen in 11 patients but none of the controls. Carbamates (maneb, carbofuran, carbaryl) were the most frequent sensitizers (7 patients), followed by organophosphorus compounds like: malathion and oxydemton methyl (4 patients); 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and fenvalerate (3 patients each); streptocycline (2 patients). Irritant reactions to captaf were seen in 4 patients, thiobencarb weedicide in 3, and organophosphorus compounds in 3. P

Pesticides and cancer risks in agriculture.

The work environment in agriculture is complex, with many potentially hazardous exposures, but the overall mortality from cancer and other causes is rather low among farmers. However, several studies have consistently indicated an excess of certain cancer forms. Lymphomas, leukemias, multiple myeloma and also malignancies of connective tissue attract special interest, as being possibly associated with the use of pesticides. Phenoxy acid herbicides may play an etiological role, especially for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, whereas the findings are more ambiguous for Hodgkin's disease and soft-tissue s

Pesticides: the good and the bad.

Pesticides have been used for many years. In earlier times they were a protection against fungi and insect pests. The great increase in the use of pesticides occurred with the development of new organic chemicals following World Wars I and II. In addition to chemicals for the control of fungi and insects, new developments were nematocides, herbicides, rodenticides, avicides, defoliants, wood preservatives, etc. The use of chemicals helped increase productivity, but caused great concern about their effect on human health and safety. On the other hand, chemicals did help tremendously from the st

Pesticide toxicosis in the horse.

Toxicosis from pesticides rarely occurs in horses and is usually the result of inappropriate pesticide use or handling by humans. Organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides inhibit acetylcholinesterase and are the insecticide class most frequently associated with toxicosis in domestic animals. Metaldehyde is a molluscicide, and zinc phosphide is a rodenticide, both of which have caused toxicosis in horses. All three of these pesticides affect the nervous system of horses and can be fatal if not treated promptly.
