Phaeohyphomycosis is a rare subcutaneous fungal infection caused by dematiaceous fungi, commonly presenting as cystic swellings or subcutaneous abscesses. These infections predominantly affect immunocompromised individuals, including transplant recipients, due to impaired cell-mediated immunity, which plays a crucial role in fungal defense. We report three cases of post-renal transplant phaeohyphomycosis, presenting within six to 12 months post transplant. The diagnosis was based on clinical features and potassium hydroxide (KOH) mount findings showing pigmented septate hyphae. Histopathologic

A right-handed man in his early 60s with hypertension controlled by a single prescription medication presented with left-sided heaviness and intermittent right occipital headache. Initial diagnostic workup was unremarkable. CT revealed an enhancing lesion located in the right parietal lobe, with mild mass effect on the right occipital horn, indicative of a brain abscess. The patient was initially treated with a course of empirical antibiotics, including ceftriaxone, vancomycin, metronidazole and dexamethasone. The neurosurgery team aspirated the abscess the following day and extracted yellow p

BACKGROUND: Neoscytalidiumdimidiatum is an opportunistic dematiaceous fungus belonging to the class Dothideomycetes.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of N. dimidiatum cerebral phaeohyphomycosis post COVID-19 infection in a 32-year-old male from Iran. The causative agent was identified by cytopathology, routine mycological methods, and DNA sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA. Apart from COVID-19 complications and the corticosteroid therapy, no underlying condition was diagnosed. The symptoms suggesting the fungal infection were shown two weeks after being discharged

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection of the central nervous system caused by dematiaceous septate fungi characterized by the presence of melanin-like pigment within the cell wall that is a pale brown to black. It is associated with poor prognosis despite aggressive treatment. We report a previously well 3-year boy with cerebral phaeohyphomycosis who had subacute meningoencephalitic presentation with refractory raised intracranial pressure and had fatal outcomes. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of brain tissue obtained by brain biopsy.

The Alternaria species are dematiaceous fungi. Human infection due to dematiaceous fungi is uncommon. Most reported cases of alternariosis have occurred in patients with immunodeficiency. The majority of cases were solid-organ transplantation recipients. Cutaneous alternariosis lesions are usually asymptomatic solitary nodules, plaques of ulcers or subcutaneous cysts. Here we report a case of a 77-year-old female who presented with hemorrhagic skin necrosis in right arm that had developed from hemorrhagic bullae. Her prior medical history included iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome, hypertension, i

BACKGROUND: Corynespora cassiicola infection is common in plants, but the human Corynespora cassiicola infection in our report is rare according to the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by a plant pathogen in a patient with acute heart failure. The organism was isolated and identified as Corynespora cassiicola according to its morphological characteristics and gene analysis. The patient was treated successfully with systemic voriconazole.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the third reported case of subcutaneous infection caused by Corynespora cassiic

Among the opportunistic mycoses that are emerging in patients with immunosuppression or severe underlying illness, many isolates lack of characteristic sporulation and until recently could not be identified. Clinical signs are mostly nonspecific and therefore such infections have often been disregarded. In the present paper we describe a novel, nonsporulating fungal species causing subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in two patients of different origin. One is a 73-year-old female from Martinique who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, while the other case concerns a 72-year-old male from Mexico wh

Alternaria species are members of a heterogeneous group of dematiaceous fungi that rarely cause opportunistic infections in transplant recipients. During a 20-year period from 1989 to 2008, 8 solid organ transplant recipients (63% males; median age, 48 years) developed Alternaria species infections at the Mayo Clinic. All patients were highly immunocompromised as evidenced by their receipt of multiple transplants, treatment of acute and chronic allograft rejection, and occurrence of other opportunistic infections. All patients presented with non-tender erythematous or violaceous skin papules,

Phaeohyphomycosis caused by Phialophora parasitica is rare and it has never been documented in Thailand. The first two Thai cases of phaeohyphomycosis caused by P. parasitica were recognized in early 1990 at Ramathibodi Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. Both patients had underlying diseases. The fungus developed in abscesses with pigmented mycelium at the lower extremity. Cultures from pus and tissue biopsies were positive for dematiaceous fungi. Light microscopic features suggested P. parasitica and which was illustrated by both scanning and transmission electron microscope. The first case was tre

Phaeohyphomycosis and nocardiosis are uncommon infections that are more frequently reported in immunocompromised patients. To our knowledge, this is the first report of subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala jeanselmei in association with systemic infection with Nocardia asteroides. The patient's phaeohyphomycosis responded to surgical excision and multi-drug therapy, and the patient underwent prolonged therapy with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for treatment of the nocardiosis.

A 40-year-old woman developed a corneal ulcer with hypopyon following a traumatic episode. In a KOH mount dematiaceous, septate, branched hyphae were demonstrated, and heavy growth of Exserohilum rostratum was obtained in culture. No bacterial pathogens were isolated. The patient was treated with natamycin and subsequently with ketoconazole. In spite of antimycotic therapy a descemetocele of the eye remained. This observation represents the first documented case of an Exserohilum infection in India.

Because of the increased incidence of infections caused by dematiaceous fungi, it is important to clearly define the conceptual basis for the clinical nomenclature for infections caused by these fungi. When considering dematiaceous fungal infections, there is a continuum of diseases that can be separated into the three categories of chromoblastomycosis, phaeohyphomycosis, and mycetoma. The diseases chromoblastomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis are compared and contrasted in this chapter.

A 3-year-old castrated male golden retriever was presented for evaluation of 2 cutaneous masses along the abdominal midline and a 6-month history of progressive lethargy and inappetence. Two years earlier, the dog underwent a gastrotomy to retrieve a foreign object and recovered uneventfully. Fluid aspirated from the lesions was culture-negative for aerobic and anaerobic bacterial growth. Abdominal ultrasound demonstrated a large intra-abdominal mass with apparent communication with the cutaneous lesion, along with gossypiboma from the previous laparotomy. Neoplasia or a sterile abscess were s

A 3-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat with a history of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, treated with cyclosporine and prednisolone, was presented for acute lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Abdominal ultrasound revealed multiple predominantly avascular hypo-anechoic nodules in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and peritoneum. Fine needle aspirates and culture of the liver and kidney revealed abscessation caused by Cladophialophora. This case adds to the currently limited literature documenting ultrasonographic features of systemic infection caused by pigmented fungi in cats

Phaeohyphomycosis is caused by a heterogeneous group of mycelial dematiaceous (phaeoid) fungi, which produce melanin pigment. This condition is often confused with chromoblastomycosis. Rhytidhysteron is a dematiaceous fungus, which has been recently found to be causing human infections. Till date only three cases of infection with Rhytidhysteron rufulum have been reported in the literature. All three cases have been from North India. Hereby, we present another two cases where Rhytidhysteron was isolated. Both the patients belonged to Chandigarh (India) and presented with subcutaneous lesions.

Though Phaeoacremonium parasiticum is an unusual cause of human disease, subcutaneous infection, eumycetoma, osteomyelitis, arthritis and even disseminated diseases, such as fungemia and endocarditis have been reported. Here, we report a case of subcutaneous abscess on the forearm due to P. parasiticum in a 26-year-old woman. There were no obvious predisposing factors. The patient was treated with surgical debridement followed by intravenous amphotericin B and itraconazole to which she responded well. We report this case, being rare and the first from India.

A 7-year-old castrated male Whippet developed deep ulcerative skin lesions whilst receiving immunosuppressive doses of prednisolone and cyclosporine for the treatment of immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia. The lesions were determined to be a phaeohyphomycosis, caused by Curvularia lunata. The dog was treated with a combination of systemic antifungals and weaning off immunosuppressants and made a complete recovery. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case report of the successful treatment of disseminated cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis in a dog.
