Pharmacy naloxone codispensing: A mixed methods study of practices and perspectives under a statewide standing order program.

BACKGROUND: In a previous statewide naloxone purchase trial conducted in Massachusetts, we documented high levels of naloxone accessibility, upon patient request, under the state's naloxone standing order (NSO) program. Equally important for reducing overdose mortality rates is expanding naloxone access via codispensing alongside opioid prescription and syringe purchases at pharmacies. OBJECTIVE: To understand naloxone codispensing from the perspective of pharmacists under the Massachusetts NSO program. METHODS: The study used a mixed methods design involving 3 focus groups and a quantitativ

"The crux of the community": A qualitative focus group study of the impact of community pharmacy closures in Colorado and Utah.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are critical access points for health care in the United States, especially for underserved populations. However, a substantial number of recent pharmacy closures have been widely documented. Pharmacies at greater risk of closure are typically found in urban areas, are independently-owned businesses, and disproportionately serve low-income populations. While prior research has quantitatively assessed the impact of pharmacy closures on medication adherence and geographic access, less is known about the broader impacts of pharmacy closures on communities, pharmac

Barriers to and facilitators of buprenorphine dispensing for opioid use disorder: Evidence from focus groups in Appalachian Kentucky.

BACKGROUND: As efforts to increase buprenorphine prescribing continue to intensify, pharmacy dispensing plays an important role in access to essential medications for opioid use disorder. Existing survey research suggests stigma and regulatory concerns are barriers to pharmacists dispensing buprenorphine, but facilitators are less clear, as are in-depth perceptions of pharmacists regarding buprenorphine. OBJECTIVE: To assess barriers and facilitators to buprenorphine dispensing in Appalachian Kentucky using a series of focus groups with pharmacy employees. METHODS: Between September and Octo

Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of screening and intervention for co-use of opioid medications and alcohol among community pharmacy patients.

INTRODUCTION: A significant risk for overdose among patients prescribed opioid medications is co-use of alcohol. Community pharmacies are underutilized as a resource to prevent and address co-use. The barriers and facilitators that promote or impede the adoption of universal alcohol screening and intervention at point of opioid medication dispensing are unknown. We assessed community pharmacy leaders, pharmacists, and technician's perceptions towards the implementation of a pharmacy-based screening/intervention for the co-use of opioids and alcohol among patients. METHODS: We conducted a mult

Examining Routine Pediatric Vaccination Availability in Community Pharmacies in Washington State.

To address diminishing pediatric vaccination rates resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act allows pharmacists, technicians, and pharmacy interns to administer any vaccine that the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines recommend for all patients aged 3 years and older. A survey was conducted to evaluate the role of pharmacy personnel in the community setting providing immunizations for the pediatric patients. Sixty-seven pharmacies were contacted in a state where pharmacists are allowed to administer vaccinations

Implementation of a comprehensive pharmacy-driven immunization care process model in a pediatric cystic fibrosis clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Members of an integrated pharmacy team (pharmacists and pharmacy technicians) have roles that have been identified in the literature as part of the multi-disciplinary cystic fibrosis (CF) care team. One role that has not specifically addressed is the administration of routine and recommended immunizations to people with CF (PwCF). According to care guidelines, PwCF of all ages should be provided all age-appropriate and recommended immunizations. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can administer immunizations per state laws. The Primary Children's CF Center decided to implement

Occupational Exposure to Antineoplastic Drugs in Twelve French Health Care Setting: Biological Monitoring and Surface Contamination.

Antineoplastic drugs used in the treatment of cancers have an intrinsic toxicity, because of their genotoxic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic properties. Their use is recognized as an occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs) who may be exposed. The purpose of this article is to present biological- and environmental-monitoring data collected in twelve French hospitals over eight years. Urine samples were collected from a wide range of HCWs (250 participants) from pharmacy and oncology units, including physicians, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nurses, auxiliary nurses, and cleaners.

Management of occupational hazards in healthcare: exposure to diphencyprone.

Diphencyprone is a chemical agent used most commonly in the treatment of alopecia areata. Its mechanism of action is through the sensitisation (type IV immune reaction) of affected areas to stimulate hair follicle growth. The consequences of accidental occupational exposure, however, have not been widely recognised. This report describes the clinical presentation and management of two pharmacy technicians that presented to Sheffield Occupational Health Service (SOHS) centre in 2012. Exposure sources were identified through a workplace visit arranged between the SOHS centre and the hospital's p

Pharmacies, self-medication and pharmaceutical marketing in Bombay, India.

Studies of pharmaceutical practice have called attention to the role played by pharmacists and pharmacy attendants in fostering self-medication and medicine experimentation among the public. Left undocumented is the extent to which clients passively follow the advice of pharmacy personnel or question their motive or expertise. While research has focused on pharmacists and pharmacy attendants as agents encouraging self-medication and medicine experimentation, adequate attention has not been paid to pharmacist-client interactions that are sensitive to the social, cultural, and economic context i

Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery: A Comprehensive History and Current Challenges.

Pharmacists and their teams have a long history of involvement with vaccines. This paper describes the contributions of pharmacy-based immunization delivery in the United States from the 1800's to date. Early activities centered around storage and distribution of antitoxins and vaccines. From the 1950s through the early 1990s, pharmacists were facilitating administration of vaccines by other health care providers. In the early 1990s, efforts began to allow pharmacists to administer vaccines, with the first pharmacist immunization training in 1994. By 2009, all 50 states allowed pharmacists to

Context analysis as a foundational step to inform the design and implementation of an interprofessional primary care model for new long-term medication users - the myCare Start Implementation Science Project.

BACKGROUND: Implementation science recognises that health innovations must be adapted to local contexts. Context analysis is a critical foundational phase for tailoring interventions and implementation strategies, yet remains underutilised in pharmaceutical sciences, limiting successful translation and scale-up of proven services in interprofessional settings. AIM: This paper provides a methodological roadmap highlighting the foundational role of context analysis in guiding real-world adaptation of a known service - the New Medicine Service - to form the myCare Start service in Switzerland.
