Lipoma is a common benign soft-tissue neoplasm derived from mature adipose tissue neoplasm, but its presence in the oral and pharyngeal region is relatively uncommon. Oral lipoma was first described by Roux in 1848 as "yellow epulis." It has an incidence rate of about 1%-4% of all benign oral lesions, with a prevalence rate of about 0.0002%. Fibrolipoma is an extremely rare subtype of lipoma which accounts for 1.6% of all facial lipomas. Specific anatomic locations of occurrence within the oral and maxillofacial region include the parotid region, buccal mucosa, lips, submandibular region, tong

The authors studied the reporting documentation of otorhinolaryngological hospitals of the city of Moscow on the surgical treatment of pharyngeal pathology in adults from 2002 to 2017. It was found that for 16 years surgical treatment of 290 362 patients with ENT-diseases was performed: 181.206 (62.4%) patients with diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses, 24.981 (8.6%) patients with ear pathology, 60.346 (20.8%) patients with diseases of the pharynx and 23.829 (8.2%) - with diseases of the larynx. The assessment of the overall dynamics of the studied indicators was carried out on the 'tren

The natural history of 292 consecutive cases of reticulum cell sarcoma and lymphosarcoma of Waldeyer's ring and the survival rate after radiotherapy are reported. In our institute since 1928 from 30 to 35% of pharyngeal neoplasms have been lymphomas, and of these 55% have been reticulum cell sarcomas, 21% lymphosarcomas, and 1% Hodgkin's disease. This high incidence may probably be ascribed to the fact that in all malignant lymphomas, irrespective of the clinical presentation, a systematic biopsy of the whole Waldeyer's ring was carried out. Pharyngeal lymphomas were confined to Waldeyer's rin

Patients with coeliac disease are at greater risk than the general population for the development of malignant neoplasms, particularly lymphomas. Of 259 histologically confirmed malignancies in 235 patients with histologically proven coeliac disease, 133 were malignant lymphomas, the predominant histological type being malignant histiocytosis and the commonest site of this lesion the small intestine. Patients with coeliac disease also have a greatly increased risk for the development of small-intestinal adenocarcinomas. Among 116 invasive non-lymphomatous malignancies there were 19 small-intes

It is reported that ultra-thin transnasal esophagogastroduodenoscopy (TN-EGD) reduces pharyngeal discomfort and is more tolerable for the patients. Ultra-thin transnasal endoscopy has been reported as inferior to transoral conventional EGD (TO-EGD) in terms of image quality, suction, air insufflation and lens washing, due to the smaller endoscope caliber. TN-EGD should be conducted slowly, with short distance observation, and also with image-enhanced endoscopy. With reference to image-enhanced endoscopy, chromoendoscopy method (indigocarmine) is suitable for gastric neoplasm, on the other hand

PURPOSE: To assess the radiation risk of carcinogenesis in individuals professionally exposed to low-level ionizing radiation in a longitudinal cohort study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analysed were the incidence and mortality induced by malignant neoplasms in a cohort of 1,560 occupationally exposed individuals (OEI) working in areas of ionizing radiation during 1992-2002 (study group). Assessment of exposure to radiation was recorded by personal thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD), regular periodic health checkups, and bio-dosimetric data (chromosomal aberrations). Incidence and mortality were c

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for 63% of all parotid gland tumors. Most tumors originate in the superficial lobe but, more rarely, these tumors may involve the deep lobe of the parotid gland, growing medially and occupying the parapharyngeal space (PPS). Our case presents a 48-year-old man with an extremely huge recurrent parapharyngeal lesion that bulging in the nasopharynx and the oropharynx and significantly comprised the airways. Surgery was planned to approach the deeper lobe of parotid gland and para-pharyngeal mass by transparotid, transmandi

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign tumor that affects young male patients and shows a characteristic development from its origin. It is not a true neoplasm, but shows features of vascular processes, developing into a more fibrous condition. The aim of this study was to correlate the clinical manifestations and the histologic findings of the tumor.
METHODS: Thirty-six patients without previous treatment were studied. We correlated the incidence and duration of the clinical manifestations (nasal obstruction, epistaxis, nasal and/or pharyngeal tumor, and facial def

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the comparative incidence of obstructive sleep apnea following velopharyngeal insufficiency surgery in the United States.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of cleft and noncleft pediatric patients who underwent velopharyngeal insufficiency surgery was performed using the IBM MarketScan Commercial Database. Patients were tracked longitudinally from 2007 to 2016 to evaluate the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea. Multivariable regression was used to evaluate predictors of postoperative obstructive sleep apnea and surgical revision.

Syphilis is surging in Japan and worldwide among both homosexual and heterosexual individuals. Diagnosis can be challenging because syphilis is "the great imitator" and clinical manifestations are highly variable. Oral manifestations of syphilis are usually seen in the second stage and the primary syphilis in the oral cavity is rare. We describe a heterosexual man with isolated tonsillar lesions initially misdiagnosed as pharyngeal lymphoma and subsequently diagnosed as primary syphilis. Clinicians should be aware that isolated oropharyngeal involvement can occur in the primary syphilis and ca

Laryngeal or hypopharyngeal localization of adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare due to the poor distribution of the accesory salivary glands in this area. We report one case of such neoplasm on that area, with its diagnosis confirmed histologically. The required a total laryngectomy with later reoperations because of hemorrhage and pharyngeal fistula. One year after the surgery and in spite of postoperative radiotherapy multiple pulmonary metastasis were detected causing the death of the patient. We review the literature of this tumor whose prognosis is much worse than epidermoid or scamous carci

Imaging of the oral cavity and pharynx often is required in three settings: assessment of an inflammatory mass in association with odontogenic, tonsillar, or pharyngeal infections; determination of the cause of a submucosal mass; and staging of squamous-cell carcinomas. Spread of infection from the oral cavity and pharynx can lead to abscesses in the masticatory space, the retropharyngeal compartment, and in a parapharyngeal location. Submucosal masses include congenital cysts (thyroglossal and dermoid), benign neoplasms (hemangioma, schwannomas, pleomorphic adenomas juvenile angiofibromas), i

Teratocarcinosarcomas are rare malignant neoplasms histologically characterized by the presence of benign and malignant epithelial and mesenchymal elements. They are seen almost exclusively in the sinonasal tract of men. We report two cases of teratocarcinosarcomas involving the posterior pharyngeal wall in a 55-year-old male and 60-year-old men. The tumors consisted of epithelial components including squamous, neuroendocrine, and glandular structures; neuroepithelium, and mesenchymal components with prominent rhabdomyoblastic, osteoblastic and chondroid differentiation. BACKGROUND: Neoplasms arising in the esophagus may coexist with other solid organ or gastrointestinal tract neoplasms in 6% to 15% of patients. Resection of both tumors synchronously or in a staged procedure provides the best chances for long-term survival. Synchronous resection of both esophageal and second primary malignancy may be feasible in a subset of patients; however, literature on this topic remains rather scarce.
AIM: To analyze the operative techniques employed in esophageal resections combined with gastric, pancreatic, lung, colorectal, kidney and liver resections and define posto

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to formaldehyde has been associated with excess risk of nasopharyngeal and selected other cancers.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed and pooled the results of cohort studies published through February 2007.
RESULTS: There were 5651 deaths from all cancers observed in six cohorts of industry workers and six of professionals, with a pooled relative risk (RR) of 0.95 for industry workers and of 0.87 for professionals. Nine deaths from nasopharyngeal cancer in three cohorts of industry workers yielded a pooled RR of 1.33, which declined to 0.49 after excluding s

Objective The pharyngeal or palatovaginal canal (PC) is a small tunnel that lies between the sphenoid process of the palatine bone and the vaginal process of the sphenoid bone. Currently, little endoscopic information is available about this region. Design and Setting Endoscopic endonasal cadaveric study. Subjects and Methods Twenty sides in 10 adult cadaver heads were studied endoscopically. The sphenopalatine foramen (SPF) and the adjacent pterygopalatine fossa were exposed. Dissection medial to the vidian canal demonstrated a tunnel that runs posteromedially in the sphenoid floor. Endoscopi

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare neoplasm whose histologic diagnosis poses significant problems in differential diagnosis. Although most of these neoplasms arise at the level of the pleura, there have also been reports of extrapleural origins. The most frequent localization in the head and neck region is in the nasal cavity.
METHODS: We describe the case of an 81-year-old patient with an SFT that arose in the retropharyngeal space. Symptoms were solid food dysphagia associated with modest dyspnea.
RESULTS: Physical examination revealed the presence on the posterior pharynge

A 46-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with history of pharyngeal discomfort for 6 months. Physical examination showed that she had facial asymmetry, loss of the left nasolabial fold, rightward de- viation of uvula, swelling of the left soft palate. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bigger neoplasm in left pa- rapharyngeal space which invaded into left lateral skull base. The left internal carotid artery, vein and the styloid process was jostled backward. The primary clinical diagnosis is pleomorphic adenoma of the parapharyngeal space.

BACKGROUND: Salvage total laryngectomy (STL) remains a difficult procedure in patients with recurrent or persistent laryngeal neoplasms after radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy. The choice of the most appropriate method for pharyngeal closure continues to be debated, especially in relation to the possible associated postoperative complications and functional recovery.
OBJECTIVE: To compare postoperative complications and functional outcomes between primary pharyngeal closure and pectoralis major flap reconstruction in patients undergoing salvage total laryngectomy.
