Mycoremediation of an agricultural salty soil contaminated with endosulfan by Penicillium crustosum: and agronomic bioassays with Phaseolus leptostachyus.

The fungus Penicillium crustosum was employed for endosulfan biodegradation, finding that sulphate endosulfan and mono alcohol endosulfan were the main compounds produced; therefore, an oxidative degradation pathway was suggested. A 93 ± 4.7% of Endosulfan degradation after one month of treatment of a highly salty agricultural soil was obtained, where ΔST was up to 17 ± 0.58 mN m-1, (related to the water value of 72 mNm-1), that was induced by the fungus during soil mycoremediation Additionally, an improvement in soil quality (reduction of clay proportion and salinity, as well as an increase o

Induction of ferritin synthesis by water deficit and iron excess in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

Ferritins are molecules for iron storage present in most living beings. In plants, ferritin is an essential iron homeostasis regulator and therefore plays a fundamental role in control of iron induced by oxidative stress or by excess of iron ions. Ferritin gene expression is modulated by various environmental factors, including the intensity of drought, cold, light and pathogenic attack. Common bean, one of the most important species in the Brazilian diet, is also affected by insufficiency or lack of water. Thus, the present study was conducted for the purpose of determining the levels of expr

Quantitative effects of leaf area removal on indirect defense of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) in nature.

Plants employ a diverse array of defensive traits against multiple enemies. While many plant defenses are well-studied, quantitative feedback effects of leaf area loss on the expression of defensive traits remain little understood. Extrafloral nectar (EFN; an indirect defense acting via the attraction of carnivorous arthropods) is generally considered 'cheap' as it is composed mainly of photosynthates. However, to what extent EFN secretion is related to the amount of intact photosynthetic leaf area is unknown. In this study, we measured the production of EFN, ant attraction, and herbivore dama

Reducing effect of an extract of Phaseolus vulgaris on food intake in mice--focus on highly palatable foods.

Different lines of experimental evidence indicate that treatment with extracts from and derivatives of Phaseolus vulgaris reduces intake of food, including highly palatable foods and beverages, in rats. The present study was designed to extend to mice these lines of evidence. To this end, CD1 mice were treated acutely with a standardized extract of P. vulgaris and then exposed to unlimited access to regular food pellets (Experiment 1) or 1-hour limited access to three different palatable foods/beverages, such as butter cookies (Experiment 2), a condensed-milk beverage (Experiment 3), and a cho

Influence of the Phaseolus vulgaris phaseolin level of incorporation, type and thermal treatment on gut characteristics in rats.

Phaseolus vulgaris phaseolin has been shown to stimulate faecal losses of endogenous N in rats. Experiments with purified phaseolin were carried out in rats to test the hypothesis that these losses reflect intestinal disorders. Phaseolin composition varies depending on its constitutive subunits. Therefore, three phaseolin types (S, T, I) were tested. Phaseolin T was incorporated in varying levels (0, 33, 67 or 100 % of the dietary protein) as raw material in experiment 1. In experiment 2, the three phaseolin types were incorporated at 50 %, with or without previous thermic treatment. Raw casei

Projections of the medial preoptic nucleus: a Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin anterograde tract-tracing study in the rat.

The projections of the medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) were examined by making injections of the anterogradely transported lectin Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) into the MPN and charting the distribution of labeled fibers. The evidence indicates that the MPN projects extensively to widely distributed regions in both the forebrain and brainstem, most of which also supply inputs to the nucleus. An important neuroendocrine role for the MPN is underscored by its extensive projections to almost all parts of the periventricular zone of the hypothalamus, including the anteroventral perivent

Organization of the projections from barrel cortex to thalamus in mice studied with Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin and HRP.

In order to elucidate the geometric organization of projections from the barrel cortex to the thalamus, iontophoretic injections of the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin were made. The injections were confined to one barrel column (i.e. barrel in layer IV + cortical tissue above and below it). Axonal terminations could be demonstrated in three thalamic nuclei: reticularis (RT), ventrobasalis (VB) and posterior (PO). Anterograde terminal labelling was obtained in RT + VB; in PO only; or in RT + VB + PO. The terminals labelled in PO were much larger than those in RT and VB. T

Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Low-Power 915 MHz Unmodulated Radiation on Phaseolus vulgaris L.

The morphophysiological response of Phaseolus vulgaris L. to low-power electromagnetic radiation was investigated in order to assess the potential harmful effects of long-term continuous exposure. The plants were grown in two separate electromagnetic field (EMF) shielded rooms, in a controlled, greenhouse-like environment. One batch was continuously irradiated during the growth period (from sowing to maturity) and the other one was used as a reference. An unmodulated signal at 915 MHz (the central frequency between the uplink and downlink of the GSM900 mobile communications band) was used, wit

Light-stimulated cell expansion in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaves. I. Growth can occur without photosynthesis.

Cell expansion in dicotyledonous leaves is strongly stimulated by bright white light (WL), at least in part as a result of light-induced acidification of the cell walls. It has been proposed that photosynthetic reactions are required for light-stimulated transport processes across plasma membranes of leaf cells, including proton excretion. The involvement of photosynthesis in growth and wall acidification of primary leaves of bean has been tested by inhibiting photosynthesis in two ways: by reducing chlorophyll content of intact plants with tentoxin (TX) and by treating leaf discs with 3-(3,4-

Improving properties of sandy soil and production of Phaseolus vulgaris cultivation using Azolla pinnata, eggshells, and biochar.

Sandy soils are characterized by low organic matter content, weak nutrient retention, and limited water-holding capacity, which restrict crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of biochar, Azolla pinnata, and eggshell powder on soil properties and the productivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in sandy soil. Field experiments were conducted during two consecutive growing seasons (2021-2022) at the Ismailia Agricultural Research Station, Egypt, using a randomized complete block design with eight treatments and thre

Can Beneficial Microorganisms Reduce Phosphorus Application Rates in Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Cultivation in Sandy Soils?

Beneficial microorganisms enhance phosphorus (P) use efficiency in common bean, compensating for its shallow root system. Integrating biological approaches with reduced P rates optimizes plant growth, improves yield, lowers costs, and advances sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to assess the effects of seed inoculation with Trichoderma harzianum and/or Bacillus amyloliquefaciens associated with reduced P fertilization on common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) agronomic and nutritional performance. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions using a Quartzipsamment Entisol soil

FTIR-ATR spectral and Chemometric characterization of leaf and seed tissues from wild and domesticated Phaseolus vulgaris.

Wild plant species represent valuable genetic and biochemical resources; however, their compositional variability and macromolecular organization remain insufficiently characterized. In this study, leaf and seed tissues from eight populations of wild Phaseolus vulgaris were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) combined with chemometric analysis. Distinct spectral profiles were observed between tissues. Seeds exhibited 13 dominant absorption bands and were mainly associated with proteins and storage carbohydrates, while leaves exhib

Removal of pesticides from wastewater at golf courses using plants (removal by mung beans; Phaseolus radiatus L).

Many studies have been done on the removal of pollutants from wastewater using aquatic plants. Water hyacinth has been the most widely-used plant, and systems using water hyacinth are well-established. These systems, however, have a few problems in their practical use. In a previous paper, we proposed a new system that could be used as a substitute for a conventional system or, as a secondary system to assist the conventional one. Mung beans will be used to remove pollutants in this system. In the previous experiment, the removal characteristics of nutrient salts such as NO2-, NO3-, NH4+ and p

Responses of two kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars to the combined stress of sulfur deficiency and cadmium toxicity.

Plants suffer from combined stress of sulfur deficiency and cadmium toxicity in some agricultural lands. However, little is known about the reaction in plants, such as responses in antioxidant enzymes and non-protein thiol compounds, to such combined stress. Therefore, in this study, four treatments, S-sufficiency (TS-Cd), S-deficiency (T-S-Cd), Cd stress (TS+Cd) and combined stress of S-deficiency and Cd stress (T-S+Cd), were set up to investigate (1) the effects of sulfur deficiency or sulfur sufficiency on Cd toxicity to kidney bean cultivar seedlings and the related mechanisms, and (2) the

Evaluation of the effect of pretreatment and preservation on macro- and microelements retention in flageolet (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) bean seeds.

BACKGROUND: Legume seeds, including beans, are a good source of mineral constituents. The level of these compounds depends among other factors, on the species, cultivar and the methods of processing applied. However, there are no studies in the literature which deal with the content of mineral constituents in physiologically immature bean seeds. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the retention of ash and 13 mineral constituents in immature seeds of three bean cultivars. The investigation included raw, blanched and cooked seeds and three products prepared for consumpti

Efferent projections of the suprachiasmatic nucleus: I. Studies using anterograde transport of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin in the rat.

The efferent projections of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCh) in the rat hypothalamus have been reexamined with the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L), which displays labeled axons with the clarity of a Golgi impregnation. Fibers from the SCh can be divided into six pathways for descriptive purposes. By far the densest terminal field arising from cells in the SCh ends in a roughly comma-shaped zone between the SCh and paraventricular nucleus on the one hand and the periventricular nucleus and anterior hypothalamic area on the other. A few axons continue dorsally from

Chloroplast Genome Sequence of Snap Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and Comparative Analyses with Other Legume Chloroplast Genomes.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an economically important grain legume for the human diet and sustainable agricultural development. Snap bean, a vegetable-type common bean cultivated for edible immature pods, serves as a crucial dietary source of essential vitamins, minerals and proteins. However, its evolutionary and domestication history remains poorly characterized. Here, we assembled and characterized the complete chloroplast genome of snap bean using PacBio HiFi sequencing technology. The chloroplast genome formed a single circular molecule of 150,248 bp, consisting of a pair of in
