OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the German version of the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) as a screening device and to report corresponding cut-off scores for different populations.
METHOD: In Study 1, 2043 subjects from a representative sample completed the SPIN. Cut-off values were established on the basis of means and standard deviations. In Study 2, different aspects of validity were examined in a clinical sample comprising 164 subjects, including social phobic individuals, individuals with other anxiety disorders and depression, and non-clinical control subjects. Internal consistency was evaluated

Epidemiological data indicate that anxiety disorders are the most common childhood disorders. 1% of children and adolescents suffer from social phobia and it may influence further adult life. The aim of the article is to show differences of child and adolescent social phobia and its diagnostic criteria. Contrast and distinction of childhood social phobia symptoms are also shown, such as risk factors of appearance of childhood social phobia. The article presents main therapeutic methods--psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy applied to children with phobia and difficulties with estimating efficacy

The placebo response forms a growing problem in randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials in psychiatry. Research into the placebo response is on the increase, but remains very limited in relation to social phobia. Together with the dropout rate, the placebo effect is an important factor limiting the discriminative properties of any study. In this study, we reviewed 15 placebo-controlled studies in social phobia, focussing on patients and study characteristics. In social phobia, the placebo effect has turned out to be moderately large and has shown no increase over the past decade. Placeb

Social phobia is a very frequent mental disorder affecting in some stage of life up to 13% of the population, and it may be associated with serious health complications (frequent comorbidity with affective and other anxiety disorders, with addictions, more frequent suicidal behaviour) and socioeconomic consequences (increased health care consumption, trend of lower education, poorer adaptation to work, higher demands on social support). The concept of this disorder was in modern classification systems (DSM and ICD) adopted only recently at the beginning of the eighties. The author describes ba

Social phobia is associated with a high level of dysfunction because of the direct effect the disorder has on the ability of the individual to interact with others in social or work situations. The level of impairment and disability is seen to be as severe as and, in some cases, more severe than is seen in other chronic disorders such as depression. The disability is increased by a cascade of comorbidity which appears, in almost all cases, to be secondary to the social phobia. This paper discusses different treatment modalities and details the efficacy of moclobemide in both short- and long-te

Social phobia is a psychological disorder characterized by the fear of being scrutinized by others and the belief that embarrassment or humiliation will be the result when contact is made with other people. Its point prevalence is believed to be in the range of 5-10%, with the lifetime prevalence being even higher. At least two subtypes of social phobia, discrete and generalized, are seen in clinical samples, with the latter subtype being associated with greater functional impairment. The onset of social phobia is early, usually preceding the onset of comorbid conditions such as major depressi

OBJECTIVE: The authors evaluated features of social anxiety in a group of adult stutterers to explore the soundness of the DSM-IV requirement that social phobia not be diagnosed in patients who stutter if their phobia relates to their stuttering.
METHOD: They conducted diagnostic interviews and verbal fluency assessments with 16 consecutive adults seeking speech therapy for stuttering. Patients also completed scales measuring social phobia symptoms and associated disability.
RESULTS: When DSM-IV criteria were modified to permit a diagnosis of social phobia if phobic symptoms were clearly exc

BACKGROUND: Data are presented on the general population prevalences, correlates, comorbidities, and impairments associated with DSM-III-R phobias.
METHODS: Analysis is based on the National Comorbidity Survey. Phobias were assessed with a revised version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview.
RESULTS: Lifetime (and 30-day) prevalence estimates are 6.7% (and 2.3%) for agoraphobia, 11.3% (and 5.5%) for simple phobia, and 13.3% (and 4.5%) for social phobia. Increasing lifetime prevalences are found in recent cohorts. Earlier median ages at illness onset are found for simple (15 y

Self-focused attention is an awareness of self-referent information and is present in many emotional disorders. This review concentrates on the role of self-focused attention in social anxiety with particular reference to the Clark and Wells [Clark, D. M., & Wells, A. (1995). A cognitive model of social phobia. In R. R. G. Heimberg, M. Liebowitz, D. A. Hope, & S. Scheier (Eds.), Social phobia: diagnosis, assessment and treatment. Both benzodiazepines and conventional anticonvulsants have been evaluated as treatments for social phobia (social anxiety disorder). Among the benzodiazepines, clonazepam is the best studied, although there is reason to expect that all benzodiazepine anxiolytics would be effective for this condition. Among the anticonvulsants, gabapentin and pregabalin, an analogue of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), have been shown to be more effective than placebo in double-blind studies. Other than a small negative open study of valproic acid for social phobia, there is a paucity of information on whether ot

INTRODUCTION: Population studies on social anxiety disorder (SAD) are relatively scarce and there is no previous reported evidence on prevalence or correlates of SAD in an Andalusian general population sample.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used a random representative sample previously identified via standard stratification procedures. Thus, a final sample of 4507 participants were included (response rate 83.7%). Interviewees were thoroughly assessed on sociodemographic, clinical and psychosocial factors, including: exposures to threatening life events (TLEs), childhood abuse, personality disorder

Social phobia is a prevalent anxiety disorder that may be treated with pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, or both. This article reviews the empirical evidence for these interventions and discusses new treatment developments. Active ingredients and mechanisms involved in the effectiveness of treatment are discussed. In addition, the elements of social phobia and its treatment that are similar to other anxiety and non-anxiety disorders are considered. Finally, it discusses future efforts to improve diagnosis and treatment for social phobia, including possible revisions to the diagnostic criteria th

In this review, issues concerning epidemiology, etiology, diagnostic criteria and treatment of social phobia are presented. This disorder is one of the most common anxiety disorders in adolescents. The main symptom of the disorder is a fear of possible scrutiny by others in the social situation and, as a consequence, avoiding such situations. Data from recent studies suggest that lifetime prevalence rates of social phobia in adolescent are several and up to anywhere from ten to, or even over twenty per cent. There is a high comorbidity of social phobia and other psychiatric disorders in youth,

Social phobia (also known as social anxiety disorder) is still not clearly understood. It was not established as an authentic psychiatric entity until the diagnostic nomenclature of the American Psychiatric Association DSM III in 1980. In recent years, increasing attention among researchers has contributed to provide important information about the genetic, familial and temperamental bases of social phobia and its neurochemical, neuroendocrinological and neuroanatomical substrates, which remain to be further investigated. Up to date, there have been several findings about the possible influenc

Background. Social phobia has been under-recognised and under-treated in many countries. Little is known about its economic impact. This study aimed to identify the economic consequences of social phobia for individuals, health services and wider society. Methods. Secondary analysis of 1993-1994 Psychiatric Morbidity Survey data compared 63 people with social phobia and 8501 people without psychiatric morbidity. Results. People with social phobia were less likely to be in the highest socio-economic group and had lower employment rates and household income compared to those with no psychiatric

This article reviews evidence for the utility of antidepressant medications in the treatment of social phobia. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) were the first antidepressants shown to be effective for social phobia, but dietary restrictions and a relatively high rate of adverse effects often relegate MAOIs to use after other treatments have been found ineffective. Reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase (RIMAs) hold promise as safer alternatives to MAOIs, but RIMAs may be less effective and are currently unavailable in the United States. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs),

Social phobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by heightened fear and avoidance of one or more social or performance situations, including public speaking, meeting new people, eating or writing in front of others, and attending social gatherings. People with social phobia are typically anxious about the possibility that others will evaluate them negatively and/or notice symptoms of their anxiety. Social phobia affects up to 13% of individuals at some time in their lives and is usually associated with at least moderate functional impairment. Research on the nature and treatment of social ph

The individualization of social phobia among other phobic disorders is very recent, although previous clinical descriptions can be found in the literature. The new classifications (DSM-III, DSM-IV and ICD-10) have provided operationalized criteria for this disorder, which have allowed researchers to conduct epidemiological studies. However, some diagnostic issues are not completely solved, namely, those with other boundary disorders. Cross-cultural prevalence and risk factors of social phobia are reviewed. Results of a French community study have found a lifetime prevalence rate of 2.1% in mal

Although social phobia is a common and highly treatable anxiety disorder, the majority of social phobics do not receive treatment. Without intervention, it is unlikely that patients will attain significant relief from the symptoms and disability associated with the disease. The authors review the results of studies concerning the use of high-potency benzodiazepines in the treatment of social phobia. These studies, which include open trials as well as a double-blind, placebo-controlled evaluation of clonazepam, have demonstrated clinical efficacy and suggest a therapeutic role for this drug cla
