Delineation of anxiety and phobic disorders responsive to monoamine oxidase inhibitors: implications for classification.

Studies of the treatment of panic anxiety and various other states with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors are critically reviewed. It is concluded that MAOIs have differential effects on several dimensions of pathologic anxiety. The association between depression and anxiety states is also reviewed; it is observed that MAOIs effectively treat severe anxiety and phobic disorders without operating strictly via their antidepressant mechanism. In addition, it is proposed that biologic depression and biologic anxiety should be considered to have some independence from one another. Guidelines for t

Posturographic destabilization in eating disorders in female patients exposed to body image related phobic stimuli.

Human postural control is dependent on the central integration of vestibular, visual and proprioceptive inputs. Psychological states can affect balance control: anxiety, in particular, has been shown to influence balance mediated by visual stimuli. We hypothesized that patients with eating disorders would show postural destabilization when exposed to their image in a mirror and to the image of a fashion model representing their body ideal in comparison to body neutral stimuli. Seventeen females patients attending a day centre for the treatment of eating disorders were administered psychometric

Evidence against a genetic relationship between Tourette's syndrome and anxiety, depression, panic and phobic disorders.

Analyses were undertaken to examine whether a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, affective, substance abuse and psychotic disorders, represent variant manifestations of Tourette's syndrome (TS). Previous studies have suggested that chronic tics (CT) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are variant expressions of TS since both CT and OCD are elevated among relatives of TS probands. In the current study, no other psychiatric disorder was significantly elevated among the relatives who did not have TS, CT or OCD when compared with a control sample. These findings are not co

The longitudinal study of phobic disorder in a community sample from early to late adolescence.

PURPOSE: This study explored the development of phobic disorder as young subjects move into late adolescence. The objectives were to determine: the frequency of clinical, subsyndromal and subthreshold phobia in late adolescence; the incident episode and stability of phobic symptoms as adolescents move from early to late adolescence; and the relationship between demographic characteristics in early adolescence and the presence of clinical, subsyndromal and subthreshold phobia in late adolescents.METHODS: The data were taken from a two-stage epidemiological study to determine the frequency of an

The role of perceived parental rearing practices in the aetiology of phobic disorders: a controlled study.

The perceived parental rearing practices and attitudes of social phobics, agoraphobics, height phobics and non-patient normal controls were investigated, employing the EMBU, an inventory for assessing memories of upbringing. Findings revealed that, as compared with the controls, social phobics and height phobics scored both parents not only as lacking in emotional warmth, but also as having been rejective and overprotective. Agoraphobics reported both parents as having lacked emotional warmth, but only their mothers as being rejecting. Interestingly, the perception of negative rearing practice

Family Aggregation and Risk Factors in Phobic Disorders over Three-Generations in a Nation-Wide Study.

OBJECTIVE: This nation-wide register-based study investigated how often phobic disorders (PHO) and co-morbid disorders occur in affected families compared to control families. Furthermore, the study addressed the impact of sex, year of birth, and degree of urbanization in terms of risk factors. METHOD: A total of N = 746 child and adolescent psychiatric participants born between 1969 and 1986 and registered in the Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register (DPCRR) with a diagnosis of a mental disorder before the age of 18, and developed PHO at some point during their life-time until a maxim

Implicit attitudes toward dieting and thinness distinguish fat-phobic and non-fat-phobic anorexia nervosa from avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The majority of individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) have a fat-phobic (FP-AN) presentation in which they explicitly endorse fear of weight gain, but a minority present as non-fat-phobic (NFP-AN). Diagnostic criteria for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) specifically exclude fear of weight gain. Differential diagnosis between NFP-AN and ARFID can be challenging and explicit endorsements do not necessarily match internal beliefs. METHOD: Ninety-four adolescent females (39 FP-AN, 13 NFP-AN, 10 low-weight ARFID, 32 healthy controls [HC]) completed implicit associatio

Panic disorder and major depression. Increased risk of depression, alcoholism, panic, and phobic disorders in families of depressed probands with panic disorder.

In a large, case-control family study of depression, 77 (58%) of 133 depressed probands displayed anxiety symptoms that met DSM-III criteria for agoraphobia, panic disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder. In two thirds of these 77 cases, these symptoms were associated with depressive episodes. In a previous study, the lifetime rate of major depression and anxiety disorders among first-degree family members of probands with major depression plus an anxiety disorder was found to be significantly increased regardless of when the anxiety symptoms occurred. In this study we analyzed our data acco

Blood-injury related phobic avoidance as predictor of nonresponse to pharmacotherapy in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

BACKGROUND: Several factors have been investigated as possible predictors of nonresponse to pharmacotherapy in Panic Disorder (PD) patients. In 1995 a study was published by Slaap et al. in this journal that found high Blood-Injury phobia scores on the Marks and Matthews Fear Questionnaire were predictive for a worse treatment-outcome for drug treatment in PD. METHODS: The present paper describes a replication study with 61 PD patients, by means of a retrospective chart analysis, who were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks of SSRI-treatment. Nonresponse was defined as still having panic

A polymorphic genomic duplication on human chromosome 15 is a susceptibility factor for panic and phobic disorders.

Anxiety disorders are complex and common psychiatric illnesses associated with considerable morbidity and social cost. We have studied the molecular basis of the cooccurrence of panic and phobic disorders with joint laxity. We have identified an interstitial duplication of human chromosome 15q24-26 (named DUP25), which is significantly associated with panic/agoraphobia/social phobia/joint laxity in families, and with panic disorder in nonfamilial cases. Mosaicism, different forms of DUP25 within the same family, and absence of segregation of 15q24-26 markers with DUP25 and the psychiatric phen

Phobic symptoms as predictors of nonresponse to drug therapy in panic disorder patients (a preliminary report).

Factors that predict nonresponse to drug therapy (brofaromine or fluvoxamine) were investigated in a sample of 44 panic disorder patients. We used a strict definition of nonresponse to find patients who did not respond at all after 12 weeks of treatment. Using this definition, 15 patients (32.6%) were considered nonresponders. Nonresponders had a higher score on the Blood-Injury subscore of the Fear Questionnaire (FQ) and more often had high scores on several FQ subscores, indicative of comorbid phobic symptoms. These variables were subsequently used to predict nonresponse.

Genetic association between BDNF gene polymorphisms and phobic disorders: a case-control study among mainland Han Chinese.

INTRODUCTION: Phobic disorders are a common group of syndromes comprising persistently recurring, irrational severe anxiety of specific objects, activities, or situations with avoidance behavior of the phobic stimulus. The present study investigated the association between whole region polymorphisms, (including the Val66Met variant), in the BDNF gene and phobic disorders among Han Chinese young adults. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study to investigate the genetic association between BDNF polymorphisms and phobic disorders among mainland Chinese. One hundred and twenty young adults wit

Brain activation of spider phobics towards disorder-relevant, generally disgust- and fear-inducing pictures.

The present functional magnetic resonance imaging study investigated the fear and disgust reactivity of patients suffering from spider phobia. Ten phobics and 13 control subjects were scanned while viewing alternating blocks of phobia-relevant, generally fear-inducing, disgust-inducing and affectively neutral pictures. The patient group rated the spider pictures as being more disgust and fear evoking than the control group, and showed greater activation of the visual association cortex, the amygdalae, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the right hippocampus.
