Decreases in contaminant loads and risk of adverse effects in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from Inner Danish waters over three decades.

We present temporal trends in juvenile harbour porpoises from Danish Waters collected during 1980-2019, and investigate effect concentrations for both juveniles and adults for a range of organochlorines (OCs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), organotins and total mercury (THg). We found declining concentrations for ∑PCBs, ∑DDTs, ∑HCHs, HCB, Trans-nonachlor, ∑PBDEs, TBT and ∑BTs over the three periods 1987-1990, 1996-1999 and 2010-2019. Concentrations above effect thresholds were detected for ∑PCBs, ∑DDTs and THg. All adult males were above PCB ef

Anisakid nematode species identification in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from the North Sea, Baltic Sea and North Atlantic using RFLP analysis.

Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) are the only native cetacean species in the German North and Baltic Seas and the final host of Anisakis (A.) simplex, which infects their first and second gastric compartments and may cause chronic ulcerative gastritis. Anisakis simplex belongs to the family Anisakidae (Ascaridoidea, Rhabditida) as well as the phocine gastric nematode species Pseudoterranova (P.) decipiens and Contracaecum (C.) osculatum. These nematode species are the main causative agents for the zoonosis anisakidosis. The taxonomy of these genus with life cycles including crustaceans an

Evidence of infectious diseases in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) hunted in the waters of Greenland and by-caught in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The pathological, microbiological and serological findings in harbour porpoises hunted in Greenlandic waters were compared with the findings in animals accidentally caught in fishing gear in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea. The body condition of the Greenlandic animals was good, whereas nine of 23 German harbour porpoises were moderately to markedly emaciated. Both groups were infested with parasites. In the Greenlandic animals parasitism of the aural peribullar cavity with Stenurus minor, of the liver and pancreas with Orthosplanchnus mironovi, of the lungs with Halocercus species and of

The liver fluke Campula oblonga from harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena stranded on the Danish North Sea Coast: updated morphometric and molecular characteristics.

One female specimen of the cetacean harbour porpoise Phocoena Phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758) was found dead on the North Sea coast of Denmark (Jutland) in May 2025. During necropsy severe pathological changes of the liver were observed (hepatic fibrosis, enlarged and thickened biliary duct walls) and when dissecting the biliary ducts six intact trematodes (total length 6.9-7.9 mm, width 1.9-2.0 mm) were recovered. Following conservation in formalin four parasites were haematoxylin stained, one specimen kept unstained but all five mounted for morphological analysis. The sixth specimen conserved in 7

Clinical, pathological, and laboratory diagnoses of diseases of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), live stranded on the Dutch and adjacent coasts from 2003 to 2016.

Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in the North Sea live in an environment heavily impacted by humans, the consequences of which are a concern for their health. Autopsies carried out on stranded harbour porpoises provide an opportunity to assess health problems in this species. We performed 61 autopsies on live-stranded harbour porpoises, which died following admission to a rehabilitation centre between 2003 and 2016. The animals had stranded on the Dutch (n = 52) and adjacent coasts of Belgium (n = 2) and Germany (n = 7). We assigned probable causes for stranding based on clinical and path

First description of the Burmeister porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis) electrocardiogram.

The aim of this study was to make the first characterization of the electrocardiogram (ECG) of the Burmeister porpoise (Phocoena sipinipinnis). A total of three ECGs were made in one, wild juvenile female (body weight = 32.5 kg, Lt = 1.45 m), temporarily held in captivity for rehabilitation at Mar del Plata Aquarium (Argentina). For ECG recordings, the animal was removed from its pool on a stretcher under constant veterinary supervision. A traditional six-lead system in the frontal plane was used, with the typical four "extremities" electrodes positioned bilaterally. ECGs were readable and all

Post-mortem findings and causes of death of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded from 1990 to 2000 along the coastlines of Belgium and Northern France.

Between the years 1990 and 2000, an attempt was made to determine the causes of death of 55 harbour porpoises stranded along the Belgian and northern French coasts. From 1990 to 1996, only five carcasses were collected as against seven in 1997, eight in 1998, 27 in 1999 and eight in 2000. The sex ratio was normal and most of the animals were juvenile. The most common findings were emaciation, severe parasitosis and pneumonia. A few cases of fishing net entanglement were observed. The main microscopical lesions were acute pneumonia, massive lung oedema, enteritis, hepatitis and gastritis. Encep

Choroid Plexus Cyst in a Neonatal Burmeister's Porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis).

Neuroectodermal developmental anomalies are reported rarely in cetaceans and central nervous system cysts are not described. We describe the gross, microscopical, histochemical and immunohistochemical features of a neuraxial myelencephalic cyst in a stranded neonatal Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis). Grossly, a subdural, extra-axial, well-demarcated, yellow fluid-filled cystic structure (1.9 × 1.6 × 1 cm) expanded the left foramen of Luschka, the left caudolateral cerebellar recess and the left cranioventral myelencephalon. The cyst displaced the ipsilateral ventral paraflocculus a

Paracoccidiodomycosis ceti (PCM-C) is a zoonotic mycosis characterized by chronic granulomatous cutaneous lesions in cetaceans. It is distributed worldwide and is caused by an unculturable fungus; Paracoccidioides cetii. On the other hand, coccidioidomycosis (CCM), caused by Coccidioides spp., is also a zoonotic and highly pathogenic fungal infection endemic in both American continents. Even though the Far East is not an endemic area of CCM, an autochthonous case has been reported in China. Although the seroprevalence against P. cetii in captive dolphins was 61.0%, there is no information on w

Detection of Phocoena Pestivirus and Neutralizing Antibodies in Harbor Porpoises Found Dead at the North Sea and Baltic Sea Coasts.

In 2019, a marine pestivirus, Phocoena pestivirus (PhoPeV), family Pestiviridae, was described for the first time. To date, the impact of PhoPeV infections on harbor porpoises is still unknown. Therefore, a screening study was carried out on harbor porpoises found dead on the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts during 2021-2025. Analysis of organ samples collected from 84 harbor porpoises by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR showed the presence of PhoPeV RNA in samples from five animals (5.9%). Infectious virus was isolated from two of these samples. Phylogenetic analysis showed a close relati

Genital warts in Burmeister's porpoises: characterization of Phocoena spinipinnis papillomavirus type 1 (PsPV-1) and evidence for a second, distantly related PsPV.

We identified sequences from two distantly related papillomaviruses in genital warts from two Burmeister's porpoises, including a PV antigen-positive specimen, and characterized Phocoena spinipinnis papillomavirus type 1 (PsPV-1). The PsPV-1 genome comprises 7879 nt and presents unusual features. It lacks an E7, an E8 and a bona fide E5 open reading frame (ORF) and has a large E6 ORF. PsPV-1 L1 ORF showed the highest percentage of nucleotide identity (54-55 %) with human papillomavirus type 5, bovine papillomavirus type 3 (BPV-3) and Tursiops truncatus papillomavirus type 2 (TtPV-2). CRYPTOSPORIDIUM SPECIES AND GIARDIA SPECIES PREVALENCE IN MARINE MAMMAL SPECIES PRESENT IN THE GERMAN NORTH AND BALTIC SEAS.

Marine mammals are known to harbor Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp., especially species or genotypes commonly associated with humans. In animals of the North and Baltic Seas, this information is missing. In this study, fecal samples ( n = 97) from harbor porpoises ( Phocoena phocoena), harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina), and grey seals ( Phocoena phocoena) present in German waters were examined via microscopic examination (by using a modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique [MZN]) to estimate the prevalence of these parasites. Additionally, intestinal tissue samples ( n = 1,049) from specimens of 10

Interspecific variation of ontogeny and skull shape among porpoises (Phocoenidae).

All extant members of Phocoenidae (porpoises) have been characterized as pedomorphic based on skeletal characters. To investigate the ontogenetic background for pedomorphosis and assess interspecific differences in ontogeny among phocoenids, samples of the six extant species were compared in terms of development of both epiphyseal and cranial suture fusion. Across all species, full maturity of the vertebral column was rare. Vertebral epiphyseal development did not progress so far in most Phocoena phocoena as in Phocoenoides dalli and Phocoena dioptrica. Rhizopusmycosis in a harbor porpoise from the Baltic Sea.

A case of systemic mycosis due to a Rhizopus sp. infection is described in a dead-stranded, 10-yr-old, male harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the beach of Neustadt, Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea (Germany). At necropsy, granulomatous mycotic lesions in brain, lung, kidneys, testis, and draining lymph nodes were found. In addition, a focal ulcerative gastritis of the first stomach, due to a nematode infection, was present and is suspected to be the portal of entry for the fungus.

Bartonella henselae in captive and hunter-harvested beluga (Delphinapterus leucas).

Previously, we reported the isolation of Bartonella henselae from the blood of harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from the North Carolina coast. Hematologic, pathologic, and microbiologic findings surrounding the death of a juvenile captive beluga in Vancouver initiated an outbreak investigation designed to define the molecular prevalence of Bartonella infection in belugas. A novel cetacean adenovirus in stranded harbour porpoises from the North Sea: detection and molecular characterization.

Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) are the most prevalent cetaceans in the North Sea. The fecal viral flora of 21 harbour porpoises stranded along the Dutch coastline was analyzed by a metagenomics approach. Sequences of a novel cetacean mastadenovirus, designated harbour porpoise adenovirus 1 (HpAdV-1), were detected. The sequence of a 23-kbp genomic region, spanning the conserved late region, was determined using primer walking. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that HpAdV-1 is most closely related to bottlenose dolphin adenovirus and clusters with Cetartiodactyla adenoviruses. The prevalen

Toothed whale auditory brainstem responses measured with a non-invasive, on-animal tag.

Empirical measurements of odontocete hearing are limited to captive individuals, constituting a fraction of species across the suborder. Data from more species could be available if such measurements were collected from unrestrained animals in the wild. This study investigated whether electrophysiological hearing data could be recorded from a trained harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) using a non-invasive, animal-attached tag. The results demonstrate that auditory brainstem responses to external and self-generated stimuli can be measured from a stationary odontocete using an animal-attached r

Biliary cirrhosis produced by Campula spp. is described in 1 striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba and 4 harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena. The hepatic lesions consisted of severe proliferation of fibrous connective tissue with loss of the lobular pattern, nodular regeneration of the hepatic tissue, bile duct hyperplasia and severe inflammatory infiltrate composed of eosinophils, macrophages, lymphocytes and plasma cells. These lesions were associated with severe infestation by Campula spp. Although inflammatory and degenerative hepatic lesions are frequently found in stranded dolphins, bili
