Behind the Complex Interplay of Phonation: Investigating Elasticity of Vocal Folds With Pipette Aspiration Technique During Ex Vivo Phonation Experiments.

OBJECTIVES: The vibration of the vocal folds produces the primary sound for the human speech. The vibration depends mainly on the pressure, airflow of the lungs, and the material properties of the vocal folds. In order to change them, muscles in the larynx stretch the vocal folds. This interplay is rarely investigated, but can give insight in the complex process of speech production. Most material properties studies are damaging the tissue; therefore, a nondestructive one is desired. METHODS: An ex vivo phonation experiment combined with the dynamic Pipette Aspiration Technique is used to inv

Maximum Phonation Times as Biomarkers of Lung Function.

PURPOSE: To verify whether measurements of maximal phonation times are biomarkers of forced vital capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and to characterize the vocal aspects of these patients, taking into account variables, such as age, body mass index, use of bronchodilators, presence of symptoms, and quality of life related to voice. METHODS: Complete records of 25 subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, both sexes, aged 31 to 85 years, evaluated by forced vital capacity, maximum phonation times of /a/, and numerical count and number reached at this c

Forward movement of posterior pharyngeal wall on phonation.

Forward movement of the posterior pharyngeal wall on phonation is divided into 2 types. One is movement of Passavant's ridge, which is a crescent-shaped or shelf-like posterior pharyngeal structure, and the other is generalized forward movement, which is not sharply outlined, of the posterior pharyngeal wall. Although nasopharyngoscopic and multiview videofluoroscopic findings on their movement show that they are markedly different, there are few reports about differentiation between them. In this study, multiple cross-sectional observations with rapid magnetic resonance imaging were performed

Pulsatile airflow during phonation: an excised larynx model.

Pulsatile airflow in the excised larynx was investigated with simultaneous recordings of air velocity, subglottal pressure, volume flow, and the electroglottograph signal for various conditions of the larynx. Canine larynges were mounted on a bench with sutures attached to cartilages to mimic the function of laryngeal muscles. Sustained oscillations were established and maintained with the flow of heated and humidified air through the trachea. The instantaneous air velocity above the glottis, which is the summation of a periodic velocity and the turbulent component, was measured with a constan

An experimental model of the pharyngoesophageal segment in tracheoesophageal phonation.

Tracheoesophageal (TE) speech is an important method of speech rehabilitation for those who undergo a total laryngectomy. Despite the many advantages over other methods, there is still room for improvement in terms of the overall quality of the TE voice as well as its success rate. These points could be greatly assisted by an improved knowledge on the mechanics of TE speech. Here, an experimental model of the pharyngoesophageal segment (PES), based on the idea of a collapsible tube, is proposed. To implement the model, considerable simplifications had to be made, most notably in the use of a t

The influence of premature birth on laryngeal development for phonation.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphonia is a known consequence of premature birth, and is usually associated with endotracheal intubation in the neonatal period or surgical ligation of persistent patent ductus arteriosus. Recently, cases of dysphonia, in the absence of these causative factors, have been reported. OBJECTIVES: This review seeks to identify literature pertaining to those aspects of laryngeal development that may potentially be disrupted by premature birth. The purpose of the review is to determine whether there is any possible anatomical or physiological explanation for dysphonia to arose solel

Effects of posture, phonation and observer on Mallampati classification.

We have studied the effects of phonation and posture on the Mallampati classification of view of the pharyngeal structures. Differences between observers were allowed for by the experimental design and log-linear modelling. Sixty-four patients were assessed on the ward, sitting upright, with and without phonation, by each of two observers. Another 64 patients were assessed without phonation, but both upright and supine, again by both observers. Phonation (the patient saying "Ah") produced a marked, systematic improvement of view; moving to the supine posture produced a small, systematic, non-s

Glottographic analysis of phonation in the excised canine larynx.

An excised canine larynx model of phonation was developed to assess the effect of vocal fold length and tension on glottographic waveforms. The canine larynx in an experimentally produced phonatory model vibrated in a two-mass system comparable to human voice production. The recorded glottographic waveforms for the excised canine larynx were similar to signals recorded in humans in the chest register. Vocal fold length, longitudinal vocal fold tension, glottic width, and airflow rate were varied while simultaneous measurements were made of the subglottic pressure, electroglottographic signal,

Pause time and phonation time in stuttering and cluttering.

This study examined the potential usefulness of automated analysis of on-off speech patterns in the differentiation of stuttering from cluttering. Two groups of fifteen persons who had been previously classified as stutterers and clutterers served as subjects for this investigation. The data indicate that stutterers tend to have greater mean pause times and lower mean phonation times than clutterers. This result corresponds to the clinically observable characteristics of these groups. It is concluded that automated analysis of on-off speech patterns provides some basis for the differential dia

Survival in Vivo Canine Phonation Model Without Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: We describe a survival nonstimulated in vivo canine phonation model using distending laryngoscope, cramp frame, and constant humidified glottal airflow to elicit phonation. METHODS: Five beagle dogs were involved in this study. One cuffed endotracheal tube was placed below the glottis through the tracheotomy and delivered humidified airflow to the glottis. Arytenoids approximation was maintained using a clamp under the distending laryngoscope. Acoustic and aerodynamic parameters were measured using synchronous signal collection system and analysis software. Vocal oscillation also

Restraining mechanisms in regulating glottal closure during phonation.

Recent experimental studies showed that isotropic vocal fold models were often blown wide apart and thus not able to maintain adductory position, resulting in voice production with noticeable breathy quality. This study showed that the capability of the vocal fold to resist deformation against airflow and maintain adductory position can be improved by stiffening the body-layer stiffness or increasing the anterior-posterior tension of the vocal folds, which presumably can be achieved through the contraction of the thyroarytenoid (TA) and cricothyroid (CT) muscles, respectively. Acoustic and electroglottographic analyses of nonpathological, nonmodal phonation.

Languages where phonation type and tone are contrastive make use of extremely fine and controlled actions of laryngeal structures; hence, there is little opportunity to variation in either phonation or pitch. Nonetheless, many American Indian languages have contrastive nonmodal phonation, which, moreover, is subject to a great deal of variation. There are a few studies addressing the phonetics of nonmodal phonation in American Indian languages, and little is known about the phonetics/phonology interface of laryngeal features within the sound patterns of these languages. This article aims to co

Influence of flow separation location on phonation onset.

The influence of flow separation location on eigenmode synchronization and phonation onset was investigated in a two-dimensional, aeroelastic, continuum model of phonation. A linear stability analysis showed that flow separation played a critical role in initiating eigenmode synchronization and phonation. For a given glottal configuration, a small variation in the flow separation location along the vocal fold surface may lead to a qualitatively different eigenmode-synchronization pattern, and different phonation threshold pressure and frequency. This high sensitivity suggests a need for phonat

Theoretical assessment of unsteady aerodynamic effects in phonation.

This paper ranks the importance of unsteady aerodynamic mechanisms in glottal flow. Particular emphasis is given to separation point motion, acceleration of glottal airflow by vocal fold motion, and viscous blockage. How nondimensional parameters such as the Reynolds, Strouhal, and Womersley numbers help in this ranking is also addressed. An equation of motion is derived which includes terms explicitly describing the effects of interest, assuming (1) a symmetrical glottis, (2) zero pressure recovery downstream of the vocal folds, and (3) a quasisteady glottal jet. Estimating the order of magni

[Otorhinolaryngeal and phonation aspects of gastroesophageal reflux disease].

Experts dealing with patients of chronic upper and lower airway disorders have drawn a lot of interest in the last decades to gastrooesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Nowadays it is obvious that 'occult GORD' may be an aetiological factor in this group of patients. GORD may has a role in lot of organic laryngeal diseases and functional voice disorders. Symptoms are triggered by gastric content refluxed into the oesophagus, which cause irritation and inflammation. At laryngeal and phoniatric examinations gastrointestinal signs might remain hidden behind chronic cough, hoarseness and globus sens
