Using a web-based tool as a supplement to classroom training may provide immediate feedback and alleviate teacher workload. The present study employed the web-based Phonetic Transcription Practice (PTP) system to train phonetic transcription skills in Mandarin-speaking speech-language therapy students and examined which aspects of students' learning progress contributed most to their post-test performance. In a pretest-posttest design, students majoring in audiology and speech-language therapy in Taiwan (n = 36) participated in a 12-week online Mandarin transcription training program using PTP

Background Unidentified or "Нет данных" patients present significant safety challenges in emergency and trauma care. Structured alias systems aim to reduce misidentification, but practical issues in their use are not well understood. This review evaluated local naming practices for unidentified patients and explored staff experiences with the phonetic alias system at a UK tertiary trauma centre. Methods A mixed-methods review combined policy analysis, a three-month audit of trauma admissions, and an anonymous staff survey (n = 25). The survey captured professional role, experience, perceived safe

PURPOSE: Many have made proposals to better diagnose and/or classify post-stroke apraxia of speech (AOS), with some arguing for the separation of AOS into behavioral subtypes. Recent studies of primary progressive AOS have promoted a separation of prosodic and phonetic subtypes, aligning with a dual-motor coordination model separating the neural substrates of prosodic and phonetic function. Motivated by the limited corroboration of these subtypes in post-stroke AOS, here we present mapping results in a cohort of stroke survivors aiming to identify distinct neural substrates for prosodic and ph

In spoken language, audiovisual (AV) perception occurs when the visual modality influences encoding of acoustic features (e.g., phonetic representations) at the auditory cortex. We examined how visual speech (mouth movements) transforms phonetic representations, indexed by changes to the N1 auditory evoked potential (AEP). EEG was acquired while human subjects watched and listened to videos of a speaker uttering consonant vowel (CV) syllables, /ba/ and /wa/, presented in auditory-only or AV congruent or incongruent contexts or in a context in which the consonants were replaced by white noise (

PURPOSE: One reason why the diagnosis of apraxia of speech (AOS) and its underlying impairment are often debated may lie in the fact that most patients do not display pure patterns of AOS. Mixed patterns are clearly acknowledged at other levels of impairment (e.g., lexical-semantic and lexical-phonological), and they have contributed to debate about the degree of interaction between encoding levels; by contrast, mixed impairments and mechanisms of interaction are less acknowledged at the levels of phonological and phonetic processes. Here, the author aims at bringing together empirical evidenc

This study involved a qualitative analysis of speech errors in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Participants were 69 children aged 5-13 years; 30 had high functioning autism and 39 had Asperger syndrome. On a standardized test of articulation, the minority (12%) of participants presented with standard scores below the normal range, indicating a speech delay/disorder. Although all the other children had standard scores within the normal range, a sizeable proportion (33% of those with normal standard scores) presented with a small number of errors. Overall 41% of the group produce

In this paper we consider phonetic and phonological aspects of the English voiceless affricate /t integral of/ as it is realised by children with developmental speech disorders. The speakers described in the study have normal /t/ but disordered /integral of/ and /t integral of/. Using electropalatography (Reading EPG), we compare the stop and fricative phases of /t integral of/ to independent /t/ and /integral of/. This comparison shows that the place of articulation of /t integral of/ can be predicted from that of independent /integral of/. There is a strict requirement for the affricate's st

This study assessed the possible relationship between acoustic and auditory analyses of vocal samples extracted from telephone calls and direct recordings. Samples from a database of auditory assessments of Voice Quality (VQ) performed by experienced phoneticians using Vocal Profile Analysis were used. Analyses were made of recordings of spontaneous speech samples from five men (aged 20-56, diagnosed with dysphonia), obtained simultaneously by telephone calls and direct recordings. Acoustic analysis was conducted by extracting 20 melodic measurements and VQ descriptors, in an automated manner

This experiment investigates neural processes underlying perceptual identification of the same phonemes for native- and second-language speakers. A model is proposed implicating the use of articulatory-auditory and articulatory-orosensory mappings to facilitate perceptual identification under conditions in which the phonetic contrast is ambiguous, as in the case of second-language speakers. In contrast, native-language speakers are predicted to use auditory-based phonetic representations to a greater extent for perceptual identification than second-language speakers. The English /r-l/ phonetic

BACKGROUND: Speech intelligibility is a core outcome in the assessment and treatment of individuals with developmental motor speech disorders. While open-set intelligibility testing is widely used, a closed-set phonetic intelligibility assessment, which evaluates listener perception of systematically varied speech contrasts, offers a focused approach to identifying segmental errors that impact intelligibility. However, such tools are unavailable in Hebrew.
AIMS: This study introduces a novel, preliminary closed-set phonetic intelligibility tool designed for Hebrew speakers with development mo

Speech is a complex behavior that can be used to study unique contributions of the basal ganglia to motor control in the human brain. Computational models suggest that the basal ganglia encode either the phonetic content or the sequence of speech elements. To explore this question, we investigated the relationship between phoneme and sequence features of a spoken syllable triplet and the firing rate of subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons recorded during the implantation of deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Patients repeated aloud a random sequence o

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system which, in addition to affecting motor and cognitive functions, may also lead to specific changes in the speech of patients. Speech production, comprehension, repetition and naming tasks, as well as structural and content changes in narratives, might indicate a limitation of executive functions. In this study we present a speech-based machine learning technique to distinguish speakers with relapsing-remitting subtype MS and healthy controls (HC). We exploit the fact that MS might cause a motor speech disorde

Previous investigations have demonstrated that naturalistic listening in real time (NLRT) can be used reliability to assess prelinguistic vocalizations and is less time-consuming than phonetic transcription. The current investigation was performed to examine the correspondence of syllable and consonant information obtained using a modified naturalistic listening in real time (NLRT) methodology compared to broad phonetic transcription for 20 toddlers with repaired cleft palate. A forty-minute vocalization sample was obtained for each toddler. Two listeners listened to each recording independent

There are many stroke patients with decreased phonation ability. Vitamin D is associated with weakness in muscle power and a decreased function of activity and is often accompanied by a deficiency of serum vitamin D in stroke patients. This study was conducted to evaluate the correlation between serum vitamin D level and phonetic function in subacute stroke patients. Among subacute stroke patients, patients with dysphonia were retrospectively recruited. Phonation function was assessed by acoustic analysis using the dysphonia severity index (DSI) and maximum phonation time for 4 corner vowels/a

Training deep neural networks on well-understood dependencies in speech data can provide new insights into how they learn internal representations. This paper argues that acquisition of speech can be modeled as a dependency between random space and generated speech data in the Generative Adversarial Network architecture and proposes a methodology to uncover the network's internal representations that correspond to phonetic and phonological properties. The Generative Adversarial architecture is uniquely appropriate for modeling phonetic and phonological learning because the network is trained o

BACKGROUND: Past reports on the speech production of individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) suggest that their prosody is anomalous and may lead to challenges in spoken communication. While existing prosodic assessments confirm that individuals with WS fail to use prosodic emphasis to express contrast, those reports typically lack detailed phonetic analysis of speech data. The present study examines the acoustic properties of speech prosody, aiming for the future development of targeted speech interventions.
AIMS: The study examines the three primary acoustic correlates of prosodic emphasis

There is a growing consensus that developmental dyslexia is associated with a phonological-core deficit. One symptom of this phonological deficit is a subtle speech-perception deficit. The auditory basis of this deficit is still hotly debated. If people with dyslexia, however, do not have an auditory deficit and perceive the underlying acoustic dimensions of speech as well as people who read normally, then why do they exhibit a categorical-perception deficit? A potential answer to this conundrum lies in the possibility that people with dyslexia do not adequately handle the context-dependent va

Event-related magnetic fields were recorded using magnetoencephalography in children with (n=12) and without (n=11) dyslexia while they discriminated between pairs of syllables from a voice onset time series (/ga/-/ka/). Nonimpaired readers exhibited left-hemisphere predominance of activity after the resolution of the N1m, whereas children with dyslexia experienced a sharp peak of relative activation in right temporoparietal areas between 300 and 700 ms post-stimulus onset. Increased relative activation in right temporoparietal areas was correlated with reduced performance on phonological proc

A patient with chronic agrammatic Broca's aphasia presented with symptoms of deep dyslexia, in which it is presumed that phonologic processing of the written message is disrupted. Functional reorganization of the "nonlexical" or phonetic route of reading was undertaken according to principles of A. R. Luria, whereby the patient must learn consciously to control behaviors that had formerly been unconscious and automatic. This patient's responses in treatment made it clear that the phonetic route encompasses at least two dissociable functions, grapheme-phoneme conversion and sequential analysis.
