Phonons, the quanta of elastic waves, play pivotal roles across a wide range of applications in both classical and quantum domains. Advancements in nanofabrication technologies have enabled phononic integrated circuits (PnICs) that provide nanoscale phonon control and enhanced interaction strengths, opening new avenues for fundamental research and innovative devices. Phonon amplifiers are essential active components of PnICs for advanced signal processing. However, traveling-wave integrated waveguide-based phonon parametric amplifiers have remained unrealized. Here, we demonstrate unidirection

We study phonon-mediated pairings in a single-flavor metal with a tunable Berry curvature. In the absence of Berry curvature, we discover an unexpected possibility: p-wave superconductivity emerging purely from the retardation effect, while the static Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approximation fails to predict its existence. The gap function exhibits sign-change behavior in frequency (owing to the dynamical structure of the phonon-mediated interaction in the p-wave channel), and T_{c} obeys a BCS-like scaling. We further show that the Berry curvature stabilizes the chiral p-wave superconduc

A strong magnetic response in materials after time reversal symmetry breaking excitation of circular ionic motion may open avenues for ultrafast control. By combining a pair of perpendicularly polarized terahertz pulses with the right relative delay, we create a chiral terahertz driving field to excite chiral phonon-polaritons in LiNbO3. The magnitude of the ultrafast Faraday rotation probe matches what we would expect from an internal magnetization of ∼10 [Formula: see text] per unit cell, which would require an external magnetic field in excess of 10 Tesla to produce. The Faraday rotation si

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have unique absorption and emission properties that stem from their large excitonic binding energies, reduced-dielectric screening, and strong spin-orbit coupling. However, the role of substrates, phonons, and material defects in the excitonic scattering processes remains elusive. In tungsten-based TMDs, it is known that the excitons formed from electrons in the lower-energy conduction bands are dark in nature, whereas low-energy emissions in the photoluminescence spectrum have been linked to the brightening of these transitions, either via defect scatte

High-resolution spectral hole-burning studies of CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanorods reveal a sharp zero-phonon line, with a line width dependent on the measurement time scale. The zero-phonon line width is attributed to contributions from radiative decay, spectral diffusion induced by surface electric field fluctuations, and phonon-assisted migration of excitons localized in the nanorods. A decoherence rate as small as 4.5 GHz has been observed, when the effects of spectral diffusion are suppressed in the spectral hole-burning measurement. Comparison between zero-phonon line widths in nanorods and s

Metal substrates suppress the intrinsic vibrational degrees of freedom of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) through interfacial hybridization and damping, limiting access to their one-dimensional phonon physics. Here, we show that reducing ribbon-substrate coupling unlocks intrinsic phonon excitations in metal-supported GNRs. This is achieved by intercalating a self-limited, chemically inert bismuth monolayer beneath pregrown 7-armchair GNRs on Au(111), forming an ordered van der Waals interface that strongly suppresses interfacial damping while preserving ribbon continuity. Lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted increasing research interest because of their exceptional optoelectronic properties, in which electron-phonon coupling (EPC) plays a crucial role by dictating how charge carriers interact with lattice vibrations. The underlying EPC mechanism is dominated by the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon scattering mediated by the Fröhlich interaction. Although EPC has been extensively studied in bulk systems, a clear understanding of how crystal-structure factors influence EPC in NCs remains lacking. In particular, a comprehensive picture of EPC e

Spin-orbit coupling is a important focus of condensed matter physics as well as electron-phonon interaction. Traditionally spin-orbit coupling is regarded as a single-body effect arising from relativity, and electron-phonon interaction is often considered spin-independent. In this Letter, we bridge spin-orbit coupling and electron-phonon interaction, and propose a novel mechanism to dynamically generate spin-orbit coupling. Based on symmetry analysis, a spin-dependent electron-phonon coupling model is constructed, and is solved by sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The phase di

In organic semiconductors, the crystal packing motif is known to modify electronic properties, such as exciton transport dynamics. Phonon vibrations can drive or hinder exciton transport, and understanding the role of these intermolecular vibrations can aid in the rational design of materials for improved solar cell efficiency. In this article, we use double pulse spatially offset femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (SOFSRS) to identify the functional role of phonon modes in pentacene exciton transport. In SOFSRS, we photoexcite our sample at a spatially offset position relative to the R

The interplay of charge, spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom in correlated materials often leads to rich and exotic properties. Recent studies have brought new perspectives to bosonic collective excitations in correlated materials. For example, inelastic neutron scattering experiments revealed non-trivial band topology for magnons and spin-orbit excitons (SOEs) in a quantum magnet CoTiO3 (CTO). Here, we report phonon properties resulting from a combination of strong spin-orbit coupling, large crystal field splitting, and trigonal distortion in CTO. Specifically, the interaction betwe

Ultrafast laser excitation provides a means to transiently realize long-range ordered electronic states of matter that are hidden in thermal equilibrium. Recently, this approach has unveiled a variety of thermally inaccessible ordered states in strongly correlated materials, including charge density wave, ferroelectric, magnetic, and intertwined charge-orbital ordered states. However, more exotic hidden states exhibiting higher multipolar ordering remain elusive owing to the challenge of directly manipulating and detecting them with light. Here we demonstrate a method to induce a dynamical tra

Background: Motivated by the recent experimental discovery of strongly surface-plane-dependent superconductivity at surfaces of KTaO 3 single crystals, we calculate the electron-phonon coupling strength, λ, of doped KTaO 3 along the reciprocal-space high-symmetry directions. Methods:Using the Wannier-function approach implemented in the EPW package, we calculate λ across the experimentally covered doping range and compare its mode-resolved distribution along the [001], [110] and [111] reciprocal-space directions. Results: We find that the electron-phonon coupling is strongest in the optical mo

Exciton-phonon coupling (EXPC) plays a key role in the optoelectronic properties of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), but a microscopic picture of EXPC is still lacking, particularly regarding the magnitude and scaling with NC size, the dependence on phonon frequency, and the role of the NC surface. The computational complexity associated with accurately describing excitons and phonons has limited previous theoretical studies of EXPC to small NCs, noninteracting electron-hole models, and/or a small number of phonon modes. Here, we develop an atomistic approach for describing EXPC in NCs of exp

The fourth-order coherent Raman response of a TiO2 (110) surface covered by HCl aqueous solution, neat octanol, acetic acid, or carbon tetrachloride layers is acquired. Four fourth-order optical responses were identified at 837-826, 452-448, 371-362, and 184-183 cm(-1) and assigned to near-surface phonons of TiO2. A third-order response produced in the bulk liquid layer was superimposed on the fourth-order response, when coherent vibrations are efficiently excited in the layer.

Recent advances in spin angular momentum (SAM) of acoustic and elastic waves have deepened our understanding of phonons across classical and quantum regimes. Here, we investigate evanescent acoustic phonons (EAPs) on a single-crystal surface and reveal an intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) spin angular momentum (SAM) with nonzero components along all axes-distinct from isotropic media. EAPs exhibit spin-momentum locking along specific crystallographic directions, while other directions yield unconstrained SAM and fully 3D spin textures. Lattice-dynamics calculations demonstrate that 3D SAM is fu

We study delay-dependent high-harmonic generation in a two-dimensional (2D) material modulated by two coherent phonons. In our first-principles calculations, two phonon modes are simultaneously initiated by displacive launch and a time-delayed probe is used to drive the HHG. We observe two robust enhancement windows (13 and50 fs) in the HHG plateau yield. Notably, these enhancements do not coincide with displacive extrema of either single composed phonon mode. Based on a minimal harmonic model, we describe this behavior involving the delay ordering and phonon-phase sensitivity. Through analysi

It is now known that in addition to electrons, other quasiparticles such as phonons and magnons can also generate a thermal Hall signal. Graphite is a semimetal with extremely mobile charge carriers of both signs and a large lattice thermal conductivity. We present a study of the thermal Hall effect in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples with electronic, phononic, and phonon drag contributions to the thermal Hall signal. The measured thermal Hall conductivity (κ_{xy}) is 2 orders of magnitude higher than what is expected by electronic carriers according to the electrical Hall con

Motivated by advances in pump-probe experiments and light-driven phenomena, we theoretically study the impact of pumped and driven phonons in Mott insulators which host multipole moments, thus going beyond conventional dipolar magnetism. As a case study, we examine pseudospin-1/2 Mott insulators hosting quadrupolar and octupolar moments, and investigate the effect of resonantly exciting E_{g} phonon modes which couple linearly to the quadrupoles. We show that this leads to multipolar precession, with the backaction resulting in pseudochiral phonon dynamics in the octupolar ordered phase. We fu

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) enable subwavelength light control for infrared sensing, imaging, and optoelectronics, but conventional polar materials have narrow Reststrahlen bands, limiting applications. Materials that support PhPs with broad spectral range, strong field confinement, slow group velocity, and high-quality factor are therefore needed. Here, using monochromatic electron energy loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope, we demonstrate that ultrathin SrTiO3 membranes have the desired properties. Systematic measurements across varying thicknesses reveal two PhP br

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging organic semiconductors with potential for energy conversion and storage. However, their electronic structure and electron-phonon interactions remain poorly understood. This issue is particularly important in 2D COFs, where covalent and van der Waals interactions along orthogonal directions manifest intrinsic anisotropy. In this work, six 2D COFs with varied bond linkages, stacking patterns, and side-group conjugation were synthesized to investigate their electron-phonon interaction properties. The results show that electron-phonon coupling (EPC)
