The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal aquifer with a diverse ecosystem located within the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula. Blue Lagoon Ltd., which exploits the aquifer, isolated a strain of coccoid cyanobacteria Cyanobacterium aponinum (C. aponinum) from the geothermal fluid of the Blue Lagoon more than two decades ago. Since then Blue Lagoon Ltd. has cultivated it in a photobioreactor, for use as an active ingredient in its skin care products. Until recently, the cultivation of C. aponinum was achieved by feeding it on 99.99% (4N) bottled carbon dioxide (CO2). In th

Green microalgae for several decades have been produced for commercial exploitation, with applications ranging from health food for human consumption, aquaculture and animal feed, to coloring agents, cosmetics and others. Several products from green algae which are used today consist of secondary metabolites that can be extracted from the algal biomass. The best known examples are the carotenoids astaxanthin and β-carotene, which are used as coloring agents and for health-promoting purposes. Many species of green algae are able to produce valuable metabolites for different uses; examples are a

The growth and on-site bioremediation potential of an isolated thermal- and CO₂-tolerant mutant strain, Chlorella sp. MTF-7, were investigated. The Chlorella sp. MTF-7 cultures were directly aerated with the flue gas generated from coke oven of a steel plant. The biomass concentration, growth rate and lipid content of Chlorella sp. MTF-7 cultured in an outdoor 50-L photobioreactor for 6 days was 2.87 g L⁻¹ (with an initial culture biomass concentration of 0.75 g L⁻¹), 0.52 g L⁻¹ d⁻¹ and 25.2%, respectively. By the operation with intermittent flue gas aeration in a double-set photobioreactor sy

The complexity of the mechanisms underlying organic matter mineralization and nutrient removal in algal-bacterial photobioreactors during the treatment of residual wastewaters has severely hindered the development of mechanistic models able to accurately describe these processes. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are capable of inferring the complex relationships existing between input and output process variables without a detailed description of the mechanisms governing the process, and should therefore be more suitable for the modeling of photosynthetically oxygenated systems. Thus, a neura

Photobiocatalysis with photoautotrophic whole cells has demonstrated strong potential for producing chiral molecules and platform chemicals using sustainable inputs such as light, water and CO2 under mild reaction conditions. Coupling enzymatic transformations directly to natural photosynthesis enables higher atom efficiency compared with heterotrophic systems. However, large-scale application remains challenging, particularly due to light attenuation in photobioreactors. In this review, we summarize recent advances in whole-cell photobiotransformations with emphasis on process conditions. We

Rising carbon emissions caused by population growth and industrialization is a significant environmental challenge in various countries. To combat this issue, Renewable Energy (RE) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies should be commercialized to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and generate carbon-free energy. One such technology is the use of microalgae, which can directly capture CO2 from the air through photosynthesis and potentially produce biofuels due to their high energy content. However, the carbon capture rate of microalgae varies globally due to numerous parameters

In the practical scale of cyanobacterial cultivation, the golden algae Poterioochromonas malhamensis is a well-known predator that causes devastating damage to the culture, referred to as pond crash. The establishment and maintenance of monoculture conditions are ideal for large-scale cultures. However, this is a difficult challenge because microbial contamination is unavoidable in practical-scale culture facilities. In the present study, we unexpectedly observed the pond crash phenomenon during the pilot-scale cultivation of Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 using a 100-L photobioreactor. This

There are two main approaches for cultivating microalgae on a large scale: either in open or closed cultivation systems. The main difference between these systems is related to how they operate (e.g., cooling and gas exchange), vulnerability for outside influence (e.g., rainwater and introduction of unwanted species), and costs for building and running the system. Additionally, hybrid-systems can be used to combine the advantages of open and closed systems. In this chapter we introduce the main cultivation technologies and discuss their main advantages and disadvantages when cultivating microa

Carbon capture is an important mitigation strategy for the reduction of carbon in the atmosphere. Microalgae can simultaneously capture CO2 and valorize biomass, turning waste streams into sustainable bioenergy solutions. However, microalgae struggle when CO2 is either too scarce or too abundant. The scalability of microalgal carbon capture requires the development of strains that can sustain productivity and carbon conversion under fluctuating CO2 levels. In this review, we reframe CO2 assimilation in microalgae as a dynamic system shaped by environmental variability. We highlight emerging st

trans-Cinnamic acid (tCA) is a precursor in the synthesis of many high-value compounds with bio-active qualities useful in applications like medicine, polymers, and cosmetics. Currently tCA is produced by industrial chemical synthesis from fossil fuels or cost-prohibitive isolation from terrestrial plants. Cyanobacteria, a type of photosynthetic bacteria, can be readily engineered to convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into metabolites of interest at relatively high amounts compared to terrestrial plants. The purpose of this study is to advance the industrial and commercial value of cyanobacte

For biohydrogen production, immobilized systems offer the potential for improved growth and productivity. In this study, microfiber-flocked surfaces were used as a novel strategy for Rhodobacter capsulatus biofilm-based photofermentative biohydrogen production. The surfaces were developed using electrostatic flocking by attaching polyamide microfibers to glass and poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) surfaces. Parameters such as fiber length, density, and adhesive type were optimized to develop shorter, denser, and vertically oriented microfiber structures. This optimized architecture increased the

An integrated photobioreactor for simultaneous carbon capture and utilization was developed by coupling non-immersed attached cultivation with CO2 absorption-microalgae conversion (CAMC) system. Polyester porous cotton, mixed cellulose ester (MCE) membrane and Chlorella L166 were screened as the optimal candidates. Compared with traditional suspended cultivation, attached cultivation significantly increased biomass yield and carbon fixation capacity by 326.6% and 371.2%, respectively. Carbon flow predominantly shifts toward lipid synthesis during bioconversion. Transcriptomics revealed that ad

The rapid expansion of aquaculture has intensified the demand for fishmeal and fish oil, increasing pressure on marine ecosystems and generating large volumes of saline wastewater. Halotolerant purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) offer a dual solution by enabling resource recovery from seafood processing effluents while producing high-value compounds for potential aquafeed applications. In this study, a mixed PPB culture was enriched from estuarine sediments and operated in a photobioreactor under saline conditions (30 g NaCl L⁻1), achieving removal efficiencies up to 75.5% and 82.3% for nitrog

Antioxidants are molecules able to neutralize reactive oxygen species with potential applications in the cosmetic or nutraceutical industries. Abiotic stressors, such as light intensity, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, or nutrient availability, can influence their production. In the perspective of optimizing and understanding the antioxidant capacity of microalgae, we investigated the effects of UV-A radiation on growth, and antioxidant and photosynthetic activities on Tetraselmis, a microalga genus known for its high antioxidant capacity. Cultures were exposed to UV-A radiation alongside to photo

Sugarcane vinasse, a major by-product of ethanol production, poses environmental and health risks due to its high sulfate content, promoting severe hydrogen sulfide (H2S) formation (up to 50,000 ppmv) during acidogenic fermentation. The resulting H2S and high carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in off-gas create serious hazards, often leading to conventional desulfurization systems' clogging and high maintenance. This study is the first to investigate a Chloroidium-based combined microalgal-bacterial (CMB) system for simultaneous, high-strength H2S abatement and CO2 sequestration from these challengin

Microalgae represent a crucial, multifunctional microbial cell factory platform for renewable energy and climate change mitigation. Their notably high lipid content (often exceeding 70% DCW) and rapid growth rates, which significantly surpass those of traditional terrestrial crops, making them an ideal feedstock for diverse bioenergy applications. This review critically evaluates advanced conversion pathways for biofuels such as biodiesel and bioethanol, as well as biohydrogen production and bioelectricity generation via microbial fuel cell technology. It further explores key technical paradig

In response to the mass transfer limitation of low concentration CO2 (approximately 400 ppm) in closed tubular photobioreactors aimed at improving indoor air quality, nanomaterials with excellent hydrolytic stability, OLA@KAUST-7, served as CO2 carriers. This approach sought to enhance carbon sequestration efficiency and biomass accumulation in Chlorella. The experiment examined the effects of varying addition amounts (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mmol/L) on the growth and physiological metabolism of Chlorella. The results indicated that 0.01 mmol/L represented the optimal dosage; at this concentration

Atmospheric pollution from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and rising global temperatures due to greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) pose significant threats to air quality and public health. Coupled biological systems can mitigate VOC emissions, generating CO2, which is then assimilated by microalgae. Static magnetic field (SMF) stimulation has been shown to enhance microalgal growth and CO2 fixation. This study evaluated the impact of SMF on CO2 fixation in an airlift photoreactor (ARL) following VOCs treatment in a semi-continuous stirred tank reactor (S-CSTR)
