Twenty patients (28 eyes) with primary keratoconus of stages I-II (Amsler) were operated using photorefraction keratectomy (PRK) supplemented by phototherapeutic keratectomy (PRK). Mean UCVA before surgery was 0.04 +/- 0.004, BCVA 0.68 +/- 0.03. Eximer laser EC-5000(NIDEK) was used in the treatment. PRK included spherical, cylindrical ablations, or both. The diameter of ablation zone in PRK was 6 mm. in PTK the diameter of ablation zone was 8 mm, transition zone 9 mm. In PTK the ablation zone was decentered towards the cone apex (according to corneal computer topography). The method is patente

BACKGROUND: Although many thousands of myopic eyes have been operated on by excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the safety of this procedure is still a concern.
METHODS: The results and complications of PRK have been studied for up to 2 years in a prospective trial including 193 eyes in 146 patients. In addition, specific complications of PRK are described that occurred in patients outside the prospective study.
RESULTS: Two eyes (1.2%) lost two lines of best-spectacle-corrected visual acuity 1 year after surgery, but at 2 years one of these eyes had regained baseline visual acu

BACKGROUND: Fungal keratitis is an uncommon condition that can occur after refractive surgery. Herein, we report a case of early postoperative Aspergillus keratitis in an immunocompetent patient following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 21-year-old white man with no past ocular or systemic diseases who underwent bilateral PRK for myopia. Seven days after surgery, he presented to his surgeon, complaining of eye redness and blurred vision that had started 3 days prior. First, empirical antibiotic therapy was initiated, and antifungal agents were subse

We present the case of a 23-year-old male who experienced vision loss in his left eye 15 months after undergoing bilateral transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (T-PRK). Despite the absence of any significant preoperative topographical risk factors in either eye, corneal ectasia was later confirmed in the left eye, while the right eye remained normal. Subtle asymmetry in topometric indices and a borderline high Index of vertical asymmetry (IVA) reading suggested the possibility of early subclinical keratoconus, potentially increasing the risk of post-refractive ectasia. The patient recei

A 24-year-old male was treated with transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy for myopia in both eyes 5 years ago. He had allergic conjunctivitis for 3 years. The night vision of both eyes was decreased for 2 years. The clinical diagnosis was keratoconus binoculus. Therefore, corneal collagen cross-linking was performed in both eyes, and the follow-up was 6 months. Confocal microscopy showed that the cross-linking of riboflavin and fiber amino was successful, and the keratoconus did not progress during the follow-up. Although there have been few case reports of keratoconus after transepithel

This is the first report of a severe case of Mycobacterium chelonae keratitis; it occurred in a 26-year-old man after he had undergone excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for the correction of severe myopia, once the epithelium was already healed. The diagnosis was made by culture results and acid-fast staining of corneal scrapings. Topical ciprofloxacin sodium, 0.3 mg/mL, plus amikacin sodium, 10 mg/mL, and oral clarithromycin sodium led to remission of the ulceration after 3 months of therapy. Subsequent topical corticosteroid therapy led to complete visual recovery during 1 year of fo

OBJECTIVE: To assess corneal weakening after photorefractive keratectomy.
METHODS: Photorefractive keratectomy was performed in 16 human eye-bank eyes by means of a 193-nm excimer laser (range, 6 to 54 diopters [D]). Porcine eyes underwent either photorefractive keratectomy procedures (range, 30 to 93 D) with a 5-mm beam diameter or deep 5-mm plano disc ablations. Intraocular pressure was increased gradually with the use of nitrogen gas until the globe ruptured.
RESULTS: Human eyes with less than 42 D of correction ruptured at the limbus or behind the insertions of the extraocular muscles. T

We used the specular microscope to investigate corneal epithelial changes after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy. Thirteen patients underwent photorefractive keratectomy on one eye to correct myopia. We observed the central corneal epithelium of each eye at postoperative periods from one to 15 months after photorefractive keratectomy. The fellow eye served as a control. In 11 eyes (85%) the central cornea showed normal epithelial patterns. Two eyes had an abnormal epithelial pattern that included elongated epithelial cells. There were no difference in the mean cell area or coefficient

AIM: Myopia is a growing endemic, especially in the young age groups (E3: 47.2% in 25-29 years old), which is projected to affect up to a staggering 50% of the world's population in the following decades. Transepithelial photorefractive keratomileusis is a novel single-laser refractive surgery that offers advantages in simplicity and corneal biomechanics.
METHODS: The study reported Trans-PRK results on 71 patients (a total of 137 eyes) with myopia and myopic astigmatism.
RESULTS: Mean uncorrected visual acuity at 6 months was 0.02054 logMAR (0.9689 decimal) and at 1 year, 0.02 logMAR (0.968
