Adverse drug reactions reported to the Norwegian Medicine Control Authority from 1970 to 1994 were analyzed, especially with regard to cutaneous reactions and photosensitization. In the time period, almost 13,000 unwanted side effects were reported. Of these, 799 reports involved the skin and appendages, of which 64 reports (8%) were classified as photosensitivity reactions. Photosensitivity reactions associated with the use of prescription or over-the-counter drugs may be classified as phototoxic (caused by potentiation of solar energy by a drug) or photoallergic (in which the combination of a photosensitizing agent and light evokes a true cell-mediated hypersensitivity response). Primary photosensitization was observed in 11/78 cross-breed calves. The skin lesions were diffuse dermatitis with thickening and wrinkling with areas of alopecia. The severe photosensitivity dermatitis was associated with cocoa shell ingestion. The lesions resolved after removal of the cocoa shells from the feed ration and prevention of exposure to sunlight. Photosensitivity in childhood is caused by a diverse group of diseases. It usually indicates idiopathic photodermatoses, first of all polymorphic light eruption. It may be an early symptom of genetic disorders such as porphyria or very rare genophotodermatoses. Photosensitivity secondary to topical or systemic external agents as well as photoexacerbated dermatoses is not so frequent in childhood. Here we present our experience with childhood photosensitivity skin diseases collected over a 40-year period.

Photosensitization of the endometrium was attempted in vitro and in vivo by intrauterine administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid, which is converted to the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX. Protoporphyrin IX was found in both functional and basal layers of the endometrial glands at concentrations nine and 10 times higher than myometrium in in vitro and in vivo experiments, respectively. Selective endometrial photosensitization is possible with topical 5-aminolevulinic acid, but it might not be distributed sufficiently evenly for use as a sensitizing agent in photodynamic ablation.
