Slender-horned gazelle (Gazella leptoceros), a new host for Tricholipeurus balanicus (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Trichodectidae).

This study was performed to provide information on Tricholipeurus balanicus (Werneck 1938) detected on slender-horned gazelles (Gazella leptoceros) (Cuvier 1842). Four slender-horned gazelles kept in the El Hamma Zoological Garden in Algeria were examined for lice in April 2015. Three of the four gazelles were infested with lice; of 37 lice collected from the infested animals, 14 were females, 16 were males, and 7 were nymphs. Lice were mainly found on the back and hind legs of the gazelles. The lice were collected by a forceps, preserved in 70% alcohol, and cleared in 10% KOH for 24 h. Therea

Geographical distribution of pyrethroid resistance allele frequency in head lice (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) from Argentina.

The human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), is an obligate ectoparasite that causes pediculosis capitis and has parasitized humans since the beginning of humankind. Head louse infestations are widespread throughout the world and have been increasing since the early 1990s partially because of ineffective pediculicides. In Argentina, the overuse of products containing pyrethroids has led to the development of resistant louse populations. Pyrethroid insecticides act on the nervous system affecting voltage-sensitive sodium channels. Three point mutations at

An Extraordinary Host-Specific Sex Ratio in an Avian Louse (Phthiraptera: Insecta)--Chemical Distortion?

Distortions of sex ratios and sexual traits from synthetic chemicals have been well documented; however, there is little evidence for such phenomena associated with naturally occurring chemical exposures. We reasoned that chemical secretions of vertebrates could contribute to skewed sex ratios in ectoparasitic insects due to differences in susceptibility among the sexes. For example, among ectoparasitic lice the female is generally the larger sex. Smaller males may be more susceptible to chemical effects. We studied sex ratios of lice on two sympatric species of colonial seabirds. Crested aukl

Comparative efficacy of commercial combs in removing head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae).

The use of a fine comb for removing lice from the head of the human host is a relevant tool both in the diagnosis of infestations and as part of an integrated control strategy of head lice. The effectiveness of a fine comb depends, in part, on the design and material they are built. The aim of this study was to compare in vivo the efficacy of metal and plastic combs that are currently used in the removal of head lice and eggs worldwide. The space between comb teeth and the length was 0.23 and 13 mm in KSL® plastic, 0.3 and 10.7 mm in NOPUCID® plastic, 0.15 and 31 mm in KSL® metal and 0.09 and

Sequencing of a new target genome: the Pediculus humanus humanus (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) genome project.

The human body louse, Pediculus humanus humanus (L.), and the human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, belong to the hemimetabolous order Phthiraptera. The body louse is the primary vector that transmits the bacterial agents of louse-borne relapsing fever, trench fever, and epidemic typhus. The genomes of the bacterial causative agents of several of these aforementioned diseases have been sequenced. Thus, determining the body louse genome will enhance studies of host-vector-pathogen interactions. Although not important as a major disease vector, head lice are of major social concern. Resis

ON THE IDENTITY OF ESTHIOPTERUM TATAUPA CARRIKER, 1936 (PSOCODEA: PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA): A FURNARIID LOUSE SPECIES.

Reexamination of the holotype of the louse species Esthiopterum tataupa Carriker, 1936 demonstrated that the species belongs to the genus Furnariphilus Price and Clayton, 1995 and is conspecific with Furnariphilus parkeri Price and Clayton, 1995. The Tataupa tinamou Crypturellus t. tataupa (Temminck, 1815), originally listed as the type host of this species, is not the true host. This association likely resulted from contamination during Carriker's 1934 Bolivian collections, when a furnariid (Sclerurus albigularis albicollis Carriker, 1935) was obtained at the same locality. The present study

New data on the chewing louse fauna (Psocodea: Phthiraptera) of some wild birds in Türkiye.

Chewing lice are among the most common ectoparasites of birds and are characterised by a high degree of host specificity, with many species parasitising a single host species or closely related host taxa. The material for this study consists of chewing louse specimens collected from birds that underwent ectoparasitic examination during the autumn and spring bird ringing periods conducted in Istanbul in 2025. In the present study, a total of 9917 individual birds representing 99 species, 40 families, and 16 orders were systematically examined for the presence of ectoparasites. Microscopic exami

First record of ectoparasites (Phthiraptera and Acari) from the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) in Colombia.

Several species of ectoparasites, including chewing lice and mites are closely associated with their hosts. The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is globally listed as vulnerable by the IUCN and its population has been steadily declining in recent decades suggesting a potential extinction of associated entomofauna. The purpose of this study was to record the species of ectoparasites infesting three individuals of Andean condor found dead in the 'Páramo del Almorzadero' Santander Department, Northeastern Colombia. One juvenile (male) and two adults (male and female) Andean condors received for nec

Molecular detection of Rickettsia in ectoparasites (Siphonaptera and Phthiraptera) of domestic and feral pigs from Argentina.

Rickettsioses are distributed among a variety of hematophagous arthropods, and represent an emergent threat. The presence of rickettsial bacteria in ectoparasites collected from pigs from Argentina is still unknown. This study investigated the presence and identity of Rickettsia spp. in fleas, Pulex irritans, and sucking lice, Haematopinus suis, of domestic and feral pigs, Sus scrofa, from Central-Northern Argentina, through the genes gltA and ompB. Rickettsial bacteria were detected in 50% of fleas and 24% of lice. The BLASTn analysis of the ompB gene fragments in P. irritans samples showed i

Genetic variation in the Heterodoxus octoseriatus group (Phthiraptera): a test of Price's model of parasite evolution.

Most of the genetic variation in the H. octoseriatus group is present as fixed gene differences between species which have been described on morphological criteria. Based on allozymes, the taxonomic status of some species was challenged. There was insufficient evidence, however, to demonstrate that these were not 'good' biological species. Overall, the limited intraspecific variation was present as fixed gene differences among lice from different hosts and from different colonies of hosts; heterozygotes were rare. Two predictions derived from Price's model of parasite evolution were met: popul

Measuring local genetic variation in permethrin-resistant head lice (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The cosmopolitan ectoparasite human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis (De Geer)(Phthiraptera:Pediculidae), affects mostly school-aged children, with infestations reported every year mainly due to louse resistance to pyrethroids. One of the main resistance mechanisms of pyrethroids is the target site insensitivity (kdr), which is caused by single-nucleotide point mutations (SNPs) located in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel gene. In this study, we analyzed individual head lice toxicologically via the description of their susceptibility profile to permethrin and genetically through the ge
