Physalins with anti-inflammatory activity are present in Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii and can function as Michael reaction acceptors.

Michael reaction acceptors (MRAs) are a class of active molecules that are directly or indirectly involved in various cellular processes, including the regulation of many signaling pathways. In this study, the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) assay was used to demonstrate that the dichloromethane extract of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii (DCEP) possesses anti-inflammatory activity that might be attributed to the modification of key cysteine residues in IKKβ by the MRAs in DCEP. To isolate these MRAs, glutathione (GSH) was employed, and a simple ultra-performance liquid chromatography

Mortality and skin pathology of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) caused by exposure to the jellyfish Physalia physalis in Ireland.

In October 2019, during Tropical Storm Lorenzo, an unusual bloom of Physalia physalis (commonly known as the Portuguese man o' war) appeared on the west coast of Ireland. The jellyfish were observed aggregating in high numbers surrounding salmon pens on two Atlantic salmon farms with tentacles extending underwater through the nets into the pens. Acute skin lesions and mortality were reported as a consequence of exposure to P. physalis on both sites. The impact of noxious zooplankton species such as P. physalis may pose a significant and more frequent threat in future if increased adverse weath

Selenylated Physalis pubescens polysaccharide extends lifespan and activates Nrf2/HO-1-mediated antioxidant defense: structural elucidation and multi-target mechanism.

Through a series of chromatographic purification steps, a novel polysaccharide, PPFP-I, was obtained from Physalis pubescens fruits. Its selenylated derivative (Se-PPFP-I) was synthesized via the HNO3/Na2SeO3 method. Structural characterization indicated that PPFP-I possesses a well-defined backbone composed of →4,6)-β-D-Glcp-(1→, →3,6)-β-D-Glcp-(1 → and →3)-β-D-Glcp-(1 → residues, with five different branched chains. Antioxidant and neuroprotective analyses demonstrated that Se-PPFP-I significantly enhanced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), while redu
