What my body looks like and what my body can do: A self-perception explanation of excessive exercise in young adults with anorexia and/or bulimia.

The present study examined the relationships between quantitative and qualitative dimensions of excessive exercise (EE) with the physical self-perception's dimensions and perceptual perspectives of body image (i.e., allocentric/3rd person and egocentric/1st person perspectives). The eLoriCorps Immersive Body Rating Scale 1.1, the very short form version of the Physical Self-Inventory and the Exercise and Eating Disorder test were used. The study includes 36 people with anorexia and/or bulimia seeking an external and specialized transdisciplinary program for eating disorders. Results show a dif

Predicting excessive body image concerns among British university students: the unique role of Appearance-based Rejection Sensitivity.

The present research examined the extent to which interpersonal concerns about rejection based on appearance, or Appearance-based Rejection Sensitivity (Appearance-RS), serves as an indicator of risk for excessive body image concerns. Extending previous research, we examined the association between Appearance-RS and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and cosmetic surgery attitudes among 106 British university students. Consistent with predictions, Appearance-RS uniquely predicted greater degree of BDD symptoms after controlling for other known predictor variables. Also, as expected, Ap

Head and neck burns are associated with long-term patient-reported dissatisfaction with appearance: A Burn Model System National Database study.

INTRODUCTION: Burns affecting the head and neck (H&N) can lead to significant changes in appearance. It is postulated that such injuries have a negative impact on patients' social functioning, quality of life, physical health, and satisfaction with appearance, but there has been little investigation of these effects using patient reported outcome measures. This study evaluates the effect of H&N burns on long-term patient reported outcomes compared to patients who sustained burns to other areas. METHODS: Data from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Res

Puberty and physical self-perceptions of competitive female figure skaters: an interdisciplinary approach.

This study considered the interrelationships among biological maturation and its physical correlates, social physique anxiety, and appearance-related physical self-perceptions in 113 adolescent female figure skaters participating in solo (n = 73) or partner contexts (n = 40). Participants were interviewed about their menarcheal status, underwent a battery of anthropometric measurements, and completed the Physical Self Description Questionnaire and the Social Physique Anxiety Scale. Menarcheal status was a stronger correlate of physical self-perceptions than age. A combination of biological and

Bulimic symptoms and body-image characteristics among university women.

A nonclinical sample of 102 women students were given the BULIT-R to measure bulimic symptomatology and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire, a multidimensional measure of body-image parameters. Statistically significant relationships between Appearance Evaluation, Appearance Orientation, and Illness Orientation subscales of the two inventories were identified. These findings indicate that women university students reporting higher scores on bulimic symptoms are more likely to report a general unhappiness with their physical appearance.

Development of a scale assessing students' Appearance Anxiety in Physical Education.

A 14-item self-report scale was developed to measure students' anxiety about their appearance in physical education lessons. Confirmatory factor analysis on 401 students' responses on the Appearance Anxiety in Physical Education Scale (AAPES) supported the existence of two factors with strong internal consistency: Fear of Negative Evaluation, and Anxiety and Avoidance. Both factors correlated with Social Physique Anxiety and Global and Physical Self Concept, in line with expectations. In addition, students who scored high on Appearance Anxiety proved to be those students with higher percent bo

Body image of patients in follow-up for pediatric bone sarcoma: implications of tumor location and local therapy.

PURPOSE: Bone sarcomas often arise during adolescence, a crucial period for psychosocial development. Treatment requires local therapy, which frequently involves body-altering surgery. Therefore, we aim to evaluate this population's body image and perceived physical appearance, and explore its relationship with tumor location, surgery type for tumors around the knee, and psychological difficulties. METHODS: Patients treated for pediatric bone sarcoma in the lower extremity, pelvis, or upper extremity and ≥ 2 years post-diagnosis completed the Perceived Physical Appearance Scale of the PedsQL

Patient opinion of scarring is multidimensional: An investigation of the POSAS with confirmatory factor analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Scarring is a significant consequence for patients following a burn. Understanding how patients perceive the physiological scar and define scar severity may provide valuable information regarding how the scar influences quality of life after burn. The Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale was the first scar assessment tool validated to include the patients' evaluation of the scars physical qualities, following a burn. Validation studies of this tool have previously been conducted for a discrete scar-site after burn. The aim of this study was to assess the structural validity

Longitudinal associations between appearance evaluation during video chat and body image concerns: A test of the "Perfect Storm" framework.

Body image development is a critical task of adolescence, necessitating the study of experiences that shape how adolescents perceive their appearance. Video chatting is one such experience, as default self-view settings render an environment in which one's physical appearance is highly salient. Although numerous studies have examined how digital technology use relates to body image, few have examined video chatting, especially longitudinally. Research is also needed examining how self-oriented digital experiences may indirectly relate to mental health via body image concerns. This three-wave l

A Pilot Study of a Body Neutrality Workbook Intervention to Improve Physical Activity and Motivation in Insufficiently Active Women.

Nearly half of adult women in the United States do not meet recommended levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), despite well-established health benefits. Sociocultural pressures emphasizing thinness and appearance may promote controlled, appearance-based motivation for physical activity (PA), a motivational orientation that has been associated with less sustained engagement. This pilot study examined whether a 6-week, self-guided body neutrality workbook intervention was associated with changes in MVPA and psychological mediators of PA among insufficiently active adult women.

What does the "perfect man" look like? An exploratory Q-methodology study on male appearance ideals among Chinese college students.

Appearance ideals play a crucial role in shaping individuals' body image, including body image disturbances. Amidst the influences of modernization and Westernization in contemporary China, Chinese men have reported a rise in body image disturbances. However, there remains a limited empirical understanding of appearance ideals specific to Chinese men. To fill this gap, the present study employed Q-methodology, a mixed-method approach particularly useful for investigating subjectivity, to explore the perceptions of male appearance ideals among a sample of Chinese college students. A Q-set of 45
