Substantial Decline in Use of HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Following Introduction of COVID-19 Physical Distancing Restrictions in Australia: Results From a Prospective Observational Study of Gay and Bisexual Men.

BACKGROUND: In response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Australia introduced public health and physical distancing restrictions in late March 2020. We investigated the impact of these restrictions on HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among Australian gay and bisexual men (GBM). METHODS: Participants in an ongoing online cohort study previously reported PrEP use from 2014 to 2019. In April 2020, 847 HIV-negative and untested participants completed questionnaires assessing changes in PrEP use as a result of COVID-19 public health measures. Binary logistic multiple reg

Ultrasound quantification of tongue-palate distance and tongue thickness in TMD patients: changes after physical therapy and comparison with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is closely linked to tongue function, yet the dynamic changes in resting tongue parameters (tongue-palate distance and tongue thickness) during TMD rehabilitation remain underexplored. This prospective, non-randomized controlled study aimed to quantify these parameters using ultrasound in TMD patients before and after physical therapy, and compare them with healthy controls, to clarify the therapeutic effect of physical therapy on tongue morphology. METHODS: 30 TMD patients and 30 healthy controls were enrolled. Ultrasound was used to measure tongu

Multimodal Physical Therapy Management of Subcoracoid Impingement: A Case Report With One-Year Follow-Up and Ultrasound Measurement of Coracohumeral Distance.

Subcoracoid impingement occurs due to mechanical encroachment of the subscapularis tendon in the subcoracoid space between the coracoid process and lesser tuberosity of the humerus. Although physical therapy is known to have a crucial role in managing this condition, to the best of our knowledge, there is no established physical therapy program in the literature. This case report aims to provide a detailed presentation and diagnosis of a subcoracoid impingement case and to investigate the effects of physical therapy on pain, disability, performance, muscle strength, and ultrasound measurements

Q-vector measurements: physical examination versus magnetic resonance imaging measurements and their relationship with tibial tubercle-trochlear groove distance.

PURPOSE: An increased lateral quadriceps vector has been associated with lateral patellar dislocation. Surgical correction of this increased vector through tibial tubercle medialization is often recommended when the quadriceps vector is "excessive". This can be evaluated by physical examination measurements of Q-angle and/or tubercle sulcus angle (TSA), as well as the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurement of tibial tubercle-trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance. This study examined the relationship between three objective measurements of lateral quadriceps vector (TT-TG, Q-angle, TSA). A se

In vitro evaluation of disinfection efficacy and physical properties of polyether impression material after ultraviolet-C radiation with different exposure times and distances.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Polyether impression material may be susceptible to water absorption when exposed to chemical disinfectants, and ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation could serve as an alternative disinfection method. However, studies on the disinfection efficacy and physical properties of polyether material after UV-C radiation are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the disinfection efficacy, contact angle, and linear dimensional change of polyether impression material after exposure to UV-C radiation at varying times and distances. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dis

Study on pressure-relief effect and protection scope of long-distance lower protective seam mining based on similar physical simulation and PFC3D.

This study investigates the long-distance pressure-relief protection effect of mining the Wu 8 coal seam on the overlying Ding 5.6 coal seam in Pingmei No. 6 Coal Mine using similar physical simulation and PFC3D numerical modeling. The spatiotemporal evolution laws of the overlying strata stress field, fracture field, and displacement field were systematically analyzed. Results show that the overlying strata fracture field presents a trapezoidal distribution and undergoes three stages: initiation, propagation, and compaction. The vertical stress peak is 3.6-4.4 times that of the horizontal str

A Randomized Double-Blind Trial of Ginger Root for Reducing Muscle Soreness and Improving Physical Performance Recovery Among Experienced Recreational Distance Runners.

Previous studies indicate that ginger root has pain-relieving properties, but these effects have not been thoroughly examined in the context of distance running. The purpose of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to determine whether ginger root supplementation reduces muscle soreness and dysfunction from downhill running. Thirty-two runners (10 women, 22 men) were pair-matched and randomized to 1.425 g/day of ginger root or placebo for 5 days. A 40-minute downhill (-7.5%) run was completed on day 3. Before supplementation and at various points throughout a 5-day protoc

From Static Stability to Dynamic Gait Governance: Differential Effects of Adapted Physical Activity and Tango-Based Therapy on Walking Distance and Plantar Load Redistribution in Parkinson's Disease.

Gait and balance impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) severely compromise mobility and independence. This exploratory randomized pilot study evaluated a multimodal Adapted Physical Activity (APA) protocol, a tango-based program (Riabilitango®, RT), and standard care regarding walking distance, static postural stability, joint range of motion, and plantar-load redistribution. Twenty-seven participants with PD (Hoehn and Yahr 1-3) were allocated to APA (n = 10), RT (n = 10), or Control (n = 7). The active groups completed 24 supervised sessions over 12 weeks. Static postural stability and tre

Does a history of exercise in COPD patients affect functional status? A study using a lifetime physical activity questionnaire investigates a correlation between exercise and functional status as evidenced by six-minute walk distance.

Recent studies have shown strong associations between chronic exercise and improved spirometric values. Building on these findings, we investigated whether habitual lifetime exercise influences six-minute walk test performance (6MWT) in subjects with at least 10 pack-years smoking history. The 6MWT was chosen for its correlation with performance on activities of daily living and predictive value for inactivity, morbidity and mortality in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) versus spirometric values, which are less adept at predicting functional status. Because COPD is

Water, sanitation, and hygiene insecurity and disease prevention behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in low-income neighborhoods of Beira, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are important drivers of the global burden of disease, and their impact is exacerbated during outbreaks. Directives to practice handwashing and physical distancing may be impractical for people that have limited access to WASH resources. In this study, which took place during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, we explore the relationship between control measures for global health crises and water, sanitation, and hygiene insecurity, with implications for other infectious diseases and future health emergencies. METHODS: We inv

Social Distance Approximation on Public Transport Using Stereo Depth Camera and Passenger Pose Estimation.

In order to effectively balance enforced guidance/regulation during a pandemic and limit infection transmission, with the necessity for public transportation services to remain safe and operational, it is imperative to understand and monitor environmental conditions and typical behavioural patterns within such spaces. Social distancing ability on public transport as well as the use of advanced computer vision techniques to accurately measure this are explored in this paper. A low-cost depth-sensing system is deployed on a public bus as a means to approximate social distancing measures and stud

A clash of epidemics: Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic response on opioid overdose.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) will have a lasting impact on public health. In addition to the direct effects of COVID-19 infection, physical distancing and quarantine interventions have indirect effects on health. While necessary, physical distancing interventions to control the spread of COVID-19 could have multiple impacts on people living with opioid use disorder, including impacts on mental health that lead to greater substance use, the availability of drug supply, the ways that people use drugs, treatment-seeking behaviors, and retention in care. The degree to which COVID-19 will im
