INTRODUCTION OR BACKGROUND: Physiological tremor is a low-amplitude, high-frequency oscillation of body segments influenced by both mechanical and neurogenic factors. Its modulation by physical exertion has emerged as a potential indicator of neuromuscular fatigue in healthy individuals.
SOURCES OF DATA: We conducted a systematic search across four databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus) in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Twenty-eight experimental studies involving healthy adults and reporting tremor outcomes post-exertion were included.
AREAS OF AGREEMENT: The ma

Workplace risk assessment criteria for pregnant workers in the EU remain inconsistent and poorly harmonised, with notable gaps in practical guidelines for occupational health physicians (OHPs). This regulatory ambiguity could lead to either insufficient protection or unnecessary exclusion of pregnant workers from the workplace, with significant implications for maternal and foetal health, as well as healthcare and social security systems. The aim of this study was to propose common, harmonised criteria for workplace risk assessment in healthy pregnant workers exposed to physical exertion and b

"Exercise starts and ends in the brain": this was the title of a review article authored by Dr. Bengt Kayser back in 2003. In this piece of work, the author highlights that pioneer studies have primarily focused on the cardiorespiratory-muscle axis to set the human limits to whole-body exercise tolerance. In some circumstances, however, exercise cessation may not be solely attributable to these players: the central nervous system is thought to hold a relevant role as the ultimate site of exercise termination. In fact, there has been a growing interest relative to the "brain" response to exerci

We assessed the cardiorespiratory and immune response to physical exertion following secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure through a randomized crossover experiment. Data were obtained from 16 (8 women) non-smoking adults during and following a maximal oxygen uptake cycling protocol administered at baseline and at 0-, 1-, and 3- hours following 1-hour of SHS set at bar/restaurant carbon monoxide levels. We found that SHS was associated with a 12% decrease in maximum power output, an 8.2% reduction in maximal oxygen consumption, a 6% increase in perceived exertion, and a 6.7% decrease in time to exha

BACKGROUND: Assessment of recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is complex and challenging. Post-exertion testing, where individuals undergo objective testing following physical exercise, has shown promise in identifying mTBI-related impairments that may not be evident at rest, but could hinder a safe return to sport.
OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review to determine if physical exertion affects objective physiological or sensorimotor tests differently in individuals with mTBI compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: A systematic search of 11 databases and five trial registr

Manual wheelchair users face many physical and physiological demands when maneuvering and participating within their community. One aspect of daily life which has not been thoroughly examined is how carrying a load affects their mobility. This study presents data collected from 10 participants completing a short outdoor course. Each participant completed the course twice: with and without an additional backpack, carrying approximately 10 % of their bodyweight. Inertial and heart rate data from wrist mounted sensors were analyzed to determine the effect of loading on manual wheelchair user mobi

RATIONALE: Spinal cord infarction is rarely caused by hypercoagulable states. Polycythemia vera (PV) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that can contribute to thrombotic events due to increased blood viscosity. We report a case of spinal cord infarction due to extensive aortic thrombosis caused by PV.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old man presented with acute paraplegia and urinary retention during heavy physical exertion.
DIAGNOSES: Imaging studies revealed spinal cord infarction at the T9 to T12 levels and aortoiliac occlusive disease. PV was diagnosed during workup for elevated hemoglobin lev

Panic disorder patients are exquisitely and specifically sensitive to hypercapnia. The demonstration that carbon dioxide provokes panic in fear-unresponsive amygdala-calcified Urbach-Wiethe patients emphasizes that panic is not fear nor does it require the activation of the amygdala. This is consonant with increasing evidence suggesting that panic is mediated caudally at midbrain's dorsal periaqueductal gray matter (DPAG). Another startling feature of the apparently spontaneous clinical panic is the counterintuitive lack of increments in corticotropin, cortisol and prolactin, generally conside

CONTEXT: Gender differences in the risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCD) are a matter of debate. The susceptibility of a woman to NCD should be evaluated taking into consideration the social factors that limit the physical activity among women. It will be interesting to note what will happen if women are allowed to take part in physical exercise to the extent of men.
AIMS: To find out the gender difference in the pattern of the clinical and biochemical indices related to NCD in young adults with comparable daily physical activity.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This is an institution-base

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that exercise training (ET) programmes may improve both physical and psychosocial functioning in implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) recipients. Most of this research has been conducted by means of quantitative methods. However, knowledge of older ICD recipients' experiences of participating in such programmes is sparse. There is thus a need for more detailed qualitative data from the perspective of older patients.
AIM: To describe older ICD recipients' experiences of participating in an ET programme.
METHODS: A qualitative design with semistructured in

Anatomic and functional abnormalities of the colon are known to cause a variety of abdominal complaints, including constipation, diarrhea, and pain. We describe a patient with dolichocolon (elongated colon) with transient spasm (pseudo-obstruction) associated with exertion. The diagnosis in this case rested with a novel approach and less invasive evaluation of the colon.

During rehabilitation of 40 patients after correction of mitral stenosis, a study was made of ventilation and gas exchange in the lungs under spirometric bicycle ergometry according to the "standard protocol" until the maximal oxygen consumption (MOC) was attained. The patients were examined 20-30 days, 3 and 6 months after operation. In accordance with the magnitude of the MOC expressed in metabolic equivalents (MET), all the patients were divided into 3 functional classes which corresponded roughly to the NYHA classification. It was revealed that with the same magnitude of the MOC the patien

Rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuric acute renal failure may occur following strenuous exercise and may be more common in less physically conditioned persons. A case of moderately severe acute renal failure after the exercise involved in a routine Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is described. This level of exertion, which is universally applied to Army personnel, should be recognized as a potential etiology of rhabdomyolysis. Prospective studies may help define the exact risk to renal function provided by the APFT.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic illness with post-exertional malaise (PEM) as a key symptom. This study categorized participants with ME/CFS who met PEM criteria into four groups based on severity of physical and mental PEM: severe physical PEM (Physical group), severe mental PEM (Mental group), both severe (Both group), or neither severe (Neither group). A control group was also included. The Both group exhibited the highest symptom severity, while the Neither group displayed lower scores. The Neither group experienced less disability than other ME/CFS

Many tactical athletes (military and emergency personnel) have fixed load carriage occupational requirements. Understanding the effects of running with common military "fighting loads" (no load to approximately 18 kg) on heart rate (HR), perceived exertion (RPE), and measuring it with accelerometers has implications for training and ensuring physical readiness of recruits. Eleven (7 male and 4 female) civilians (21.5±2.3 years, 1.83±0.09 m, and 80.7±18.5 kg) completed four, 5- minute running (8.05 kph) conditions: no external load, rifle carriage (3.5 kg), pack carriage (13.6 kg), and rifle/pa
