Aging in the context of obesity exacerbates the risk of morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease. However, the maladaptive responses in the heart that arise from prolonged obesity and the specific influence of biological age remain somewhat elusive. This study investigated the effects of diet-induced obesity (DIO) and aging on physical performance and cardiovascular function in mice. 22- and 76-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were randomized to 8 weeks of chow or high-fat diet. Body weight was assessed weekly. Body composition was measured at the beginning and the end of the diet

BACKGROUND: As society ages, identifying individuals at risk of sarcopenia becomes essential. Several plasma biomarkers are used to assess musculoskeletal status, but their results are inconsistent. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are investigated as disease biomarkers due to their role in transporting molecules and influencing cellular processes. This study investigated the correlation of known sarcopenia biomarkers-adiponectin, myostatin, P3NP, CRP and TNF-α-measured from plasma-derived EVs with muscle mass, function and performance in an Osteoporosis Sarcopenia cohort at the Seoul National Uni

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) causes a gradual decline in cognition, limitations of dual-tasking and physical function leading to total dependence. Hence, information about the interaction between physical function, dual-task performance and cognition may lead to new treatment strategies with the purpose of preserving function and quality of life. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between physical function, dual-task performance and cognition in community-dwelling patients with mild AD.
METHODS: Baseline results from 185 participants (50-90 years old) in th

INTRODUCTION: Age-related neuromuscular decline may reflect the muscle-brain axis linking neurodegeneration to cognitive impairment. This study examines whether physical performance mediates associations between blood neurodegeneration biomarkers and cognition, and whether cognitive reserve modulates these relationships.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 206 outpatients aged ≥65 years. Physical performance was assessed via handgrip strength, 6-minute walk test, and Short Physical Performance Battery. Cognitive function was evaluated using MMSE, MoCA, verbal fluencies, and me

Physical performance (PP) and functional balance (FB) abnormalities are frequently encountered problems in patients on maintenance renal hemodialysis (MRH). Although the exercise therapy is an adjunctive to the routine medical care for patients with chronic kidney disease of various stages; but the benefits as well as the long-term effects of different exercises on the PP and FB in patients on MRH are not yet fully described. In this study; Sixty-six patients on MRH (36 males, 30 females), age 35-45 years, were randomly assigned into one of the three groups: aerobic exercise training group (AE

Overall physical performance can be represented by a composite score that is derived from upper and lower extremity performance measures. We aimed to identify whether composite scores of performance measures, particularly the lower extremity performance (LEP) score, upper extremity performance (UEP) score, and an overall score, are more accurate than usual gait speed (UGS) for assessing a wide range of functional status. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis on data from 701 community-dwelling older women (mean age 74.3 years). Trained testers measured UGS and the seven tests included in the

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS), coated sodium butyrate (CSB), and their combination on growth performance, immune parameters, and intestinal barrier of broilers. A total of 192 1-day-old chicks were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial design including two dietary additives (0 and 150 mg/kg XOS and 0 and 400 mg/kg CSB). This trial lasted for 42 days. CSB supplementation increased the thymus and bursa index, blood myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and IgG and IgM concentrations, whereas adding XOS only improved IgM concentration

BACKGROUND: Motor observation (MO) and concurrent observation and physical practice (MP) are two commonly used approaches during early motor skill acquisition. This study tests an integrated Action Observation Training-Neuroplasticity Theory (AOT-NPT) framework, hypothesizing that: (H1) MP will elicit stronger functional connectivity in frontoparietal networks compared to MO; (H2): transitioning from an easier to a more demanding motor task will be associated with changes in functional connectivity patterns, particularly in the MP condition; (H3): functional connectivity will demonstrate metho

Background/Objectives: Physical activity (PA) and body mass index (BMI) are two central modifiable determinants of cardiometabolic health and functional performance across the adult lifespan. Excess adiposity and physical inactivity frequently coexist and may interact in determining functional aging trajectories. However, evidence from real-world primary care populations examining whether PA-cardiometabolic associations are consistent across BMI categories-including individuals with obesity-remains limited. This study evaluated the associations between self-reported PA categories and LDL-C con
