Knowledge, awareness, and attitude of physical therapists on Alzheimer's disease in Syria.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a growing global health concern, yet physical therapists’ (PTs) knowledge and attitudes toward AD in Syria remain understudied. This study assessed these factors to identify gaps and inform interventions. A cross-sectional study of 279 Syrian PTs used validated scales (ADKS, DAS). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze knowledge, attitudes, and associated factors. PTs showed moderate knowledge (72.6% accuracy in AD-assessment/diagnosis and 59.5% in AD caregiving) but significant gaps (55.9% incorrectly linked tremors to AD). Attitudes toward AD

Power and promise of narrative for advancing physical therapist education and practice.

This perspective article provides a justification for and an overview of the use of narrative as a pedagogical tool for educators to help physical therapist students, residents, and clinicians develop skills of reflection and reflexivity in clinical practice. The use of narratives is a pedagogical approach that provides a reflective and interpretive framework for analyzing and making sense of texts, stories, and other experiences within learning environments. This article describes reflection as a well-established method to support critical analysis of clinical experiences; to assist in uncove

The continuum of care for individuals with lifelong disabilities: role of the physical therapist.

Many individuals with lifelong disabilities (LLDs) of childhood onset are living longer, participating in adult roles, and seeking comprehensive health care services, including physical therapy, with greater frequency than in the past. Individuals with LLDs have the same goals of health and wellness as those without disabilities. Aging with a chronic LLD is not yet well understood; however, impairments such as pain, fatigue, and osteoporosis often present earlier than in adults who are aging typically. People with LLDs, especially those living with developmental disabilities such as cerebral p

Chest injuries, what the sports physical therapist should know.

Chest injuries in contact and collision sports are relatively rare, particularly those that are life threatening. However, as with every sports related injury, one must initially consider life threatening situations that may occur as a result of collision with another player, a stationary object, or being struck with some type of object (missile). In other words, as is the case in all acute sports injury assessment, the mechanism of injury must be considered when evaluating the injured athlete on the field as well as on the sidelines. The Sports Physical Therapist (PT) must look for several in

[Roles of physical, occupational and speech therapists in in-home medical care].

To clarify the current status and issues encountered by physical, occupational, and speech therapists in in-home medical care, a mail survey was conducted in 1996 of 1,292 physicians in the Tokyo metropolitan area who were presumed to have in-home patients. Of the 656 respondents, 243 physicians (37.0%) stated that therapists were involved in treatment of their patients, with 223 of the therapists being physical therapists, 42 being occupational therapists, and 25 being speech therapists. Of the 243 responses, 75 answered that they themselves provided instructions to the therapists, 58 stated

Screening for musculoskeletal deviations--a challenge for the physical therapist. The Utah Study.

We conducted an on-site examination in selected middle and junior high schools in Utah to determine the incidence of selected musculoskeletal deviations. During a regular school year, we screened 4,670 children. The students we examined represented a random sample of students in the sixth through the ninth grades from a population of 81,047 students. Among the 2,192 boys and 2,478 girls examined, we noted a total of 10,551 postural deviations. Eighteen categories of deviations of the musculoskeletal system were examined visually. Lordosis was the most common postural deviation seen (45%), and

Resources for vocational planning applied to the job title of PHYSICAL THERAPIST.

Industrial rehabilitation is a rapidly developing area of health care. As a result, physical therapists need to become functionally familiar with common vocational planning processes and resources. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to describe a process called Vocational Diagnosis and Assessment of Residual Employability (VDARE), which is based on the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) and Classification of Jobs (COJ) resources. We have provided the DOT and COJ classifications for the job title of PHYSICAL THERAPIST as an example of their terminology. A critique of the DOT and COJ

The Unconsidered Pathway: Suggestions for Physical Therapists to Facilitate Student Reintegration to Physical Education after a Concussion.

Background/Objectives: "Return-to-play" and "return-to-learn" after a concussion are familiar concepts due to guidelines proposed by the Concussion in Sport Group and Heads-Up Initiative. The purpose of this commentary is to expand upon the current consensus guidelines for treatment of concussed children and adolescents, as well as provide guidelines for returning to physical education (RT-PE) classes. Proposal: The authors propose one general and four subtype-specific guidelines post-concussion injury. This framework highlights the role of physical therapists in the management of children wit

Consideration of Psychosocial Factors in Acute Low Back Pain by Physical Therapists.

Clinical guidelines consistently recommend screening psychosocial (PS) factors in patients with low back pain (LBP), regardless of its mechanical nature, as recognized contributors to pain chronicity. However, the ability of physiotherapists (PTs) in identifying these factors remains controversial. This study aimed to assess the current identification of psychosocial risk factors by physical therapists (PTs) and which characteristics of PTs are associated with the identification of the main risk for chronicity (physical or psychosocial). A cross-sectional descriptive study surveying Spanish PT

Influence of Physical Therapists' Kinesiophobic Beliefs on Lifting Capacity in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Physical therapists' recommendations to patients to avoid daily physical activity can be influenced by the therapists' kinesiophobic beliefs. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the influence of physical therapists' kinesiophobic beliefs on lifting capacity in healthy people. DESIGN: A blinded, cluster-randomized cross-sectional study was performed. METHODS: The participants (n=256; 105 male, 151 female) w
