Reciprocal Influence of Mobility and Speech-Language: Advancing Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy Cotreatment and Collaboration for Adults With Neurological Conditions.

UNLABELLED: Mobility and speech-language impairments and limitations in adults with neurological conditions manifest not in isolated anatomical components but instead in the individual-environment system and are task-dependent. Optimization of function thus requires interprofessional care to promote participation in meaningful life areas within appropriate task and environmental contexts. Cotreatment guidelines (ie, the concurrent intervention of disciplines) were established by the physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language and hearing professional organizations nearly 2 deca

Physical therapist characteristics and therapeutic relationship process construct factors that improve patient health outcomes in physical therapy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: It appears that the therapeutic relationship in physiotherapy practice facilitates the success of patient health outcomes, although the process by which it is carried out has been poorly studied. OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of the therapeutic relationship on any patient health outcomes in physical therapy settings. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, LILACS and Dialnet databases were systematically searched following PRISMA guidelines. The searches were completed in August 2024. Qualitative and quantitative studies measuring the therapeutic relationship and a

Development of a Physical Therapy-Based Exercise Program for Adults with Down Syndrome.

In adults with Down syndrome, the combination of low physical activity and fitness levels and the high prevalence of musculoskeletal co-morbidities stresses the need for specialized exercise programs. The goal of this research study was to develop a specialized exercise program for individuals with Down syndrome using the physical therapy approach of a systems review as the foundation. We first conducted an overview of the literature on co-morbidities in adults with Down syndrome using the systems review method to categorize these findings. We extracted recommendations for content and delivery

The Role of Positional Release Therapy in Treating Recalcitrant Brachial Plexus Neuritis: A Case Report.

A 17-year-old female soccer player presented with severe right shoulder pain and scapular winging due to brachial plexus neuritis. The patient was diagnosed with Parsonage-Turner syndrome, a rare condition often resistant to traditional physical therapy, which typically persists for 6 months to years, at times requiring surgical intervention. Over the course of 6 weeks, the patient received positional release therapy once a week coupled with electrical modalities, massage, and a daily home exercise program. This case report is unique because we believe we were the first to use positional relea

To constrain or not to constrain, and other stories of intensive upper extremity training for children with unilateral cerebral palsy.

Impaired hand function is among the most functionally disabling symptoms of unilateral cerebral palsy. Evidence-based treatment approaches are generally lacking. However, recent approaches providing intensive upper extremity training appear promising. In this review, we first describe two such approaches, constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) and bimanual training (hand-arm bimanual intensive therapy). We then summarize findings across more than 100 participants in our CIMT/bimanual training studies since 1997. We show that (1) at high intensities, CIMT and bimanual training improve dexte

[Tendinopathies of the Lower Extremities in Sport--Diagnostics and Therapy].

Tendinopathies are frequently the cause of chronic, load-dependent complaints of the lower extremity. Commonly, the large tendons of the ankle and knee joints are affected, especially the Achilles and patellar tendons. Repeated overuse in sports and/or daily activities is assumed as the aetiology. Besides the clinical examination including a comprehensive anamnesis of pain and training/loading, sonographic imaging has a high training/loading relevance for the diagnosis of tendon pathologies of the lower extremity. Training concepts are considered in first line as the treatment of choice. A com

Splinting of the hand in leprosy.

Clawing of the hand in Leprosy, which is caused due to paralysis of intrinsics can often be prevented and corrected to some extent if looked in properly. Splints can contribute a lot to this. This article emphasizes the use of variety of splints prepared from alumafoam, hexcelplast and such other materials, as an adjunct to other physiotherapy measures like wax-bath, massage and exercises.

[Dupuytren's contracture. When operate? Conservative preliminary treatment?].

The etiology, symptomatology, clinical findings, course and staging of Dupuytren's contracture are discussed. Surgery is indicated from the second stage onwards; since pain very rarely occurs, it plays no role in establishing the indication for operation. The surgical techniques available are described. Conservative therapy has no influence on the course of the condition, while radiotherapy is inadmissible on account of its side effects. Physical therapy and physiotherapeutic pre-operative measures can improve the results of surgery.

Physical modalities for treating acne and rosacea.

Physical modalities provide an important adjunct to medical treatment of acne and rosacea. In patients who cannot tolerate or fail medical treatments, physical modalities offer an alternative approach. For cases of acne scarring, phymatous changes of rosacea, and rosacea-associated telangiectasia, physical modalities such as laser and light treatments represent the treatment of choice. We will review the use of laser and light treatments, photodynamic therapy, and other physical modalities such as targeted therapies for the treatment of acne and rosacea.

Outcomes of a conservative care program for knee osteoarthritis through translation of research into practice.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based guidelines suggest a conservative, nonsurgical approach as first-line treatment for knee osteoarthritis. However, previous literature has documented underutilization of the fundamental components of condition management emphasized in the guidelines. The intervention aim is to apply organized conservative components of care for knee osteoarthritis in an evidence-based management program through the translation of research into practice with a target to observe meaningful functional improvement in a distinct population. METHODS: The program, modeled after the nonsur

Home Exercises Versus On-Site Rehabilitation in the Management of Lateral Elbow Tendinopathy: A Critically Appraised Topic.

Clinical Scenario: Lateral elbow tendinopathy (LE) is a common musculoskeletal condition that often results in pain and disability. An array of conservative interventions have been shown to improve patient outcomes in outpatient rehabilitation clinics. However, with the rise in health care costs, patients and rehabilitation specialists have opted to reduce the number of in-house visits and focus on home exercise programs (HEPs). As a result, many rehabilitation specialists and patients now depend on HEPs as the primary intervention to treat LE. Focused Clinical Question: For individuals with L

Manual therapy for lumbar spinal stenosis: a comprehensive physical therapy approach.

A physical therapy approach to lumbar spinal stenosis involves techniques directed at opening up the neurovascular spaces in the lumbar spine to reduce the stenosis. This entails manual therapy techniques for improving intervertebral motion, regaining neural mobility, and restoring muscle function, followed by an active exercise program that often involves flexion exercises. Techniques for unloading the spine and patient education are included in this physical therapy approach. A successful functional outcome requires a comprehensive and individualized approach to the patient with spinal steno
