Comparative physiological and transcriptomic analyses of differential mesotrione tolerance in foxtail millet seedlings.

Foxtail millet is an important drought-tolerant crop, yet its production is threatened by weed competition due to limited herbicide options. The 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicide mesotrione shows promise but causes differential responses among varieties. This study investigated the physiological and transcriptomic responses underlying differential mesotrione tolerance in two foxtail millet cultivars, Jingu 21 (JG21, sensitive) and Zhangzagu 10 (ZZG10, tolerant). Physiological analyses revealed that ZZG10 maintained higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn), photosystem

Exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) in blood and urine under physiological conditions: a comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: Blood and urine are commonly used specimens for clinical testing, and their contents, particularly exosomal microRNA (miRNA), are diverse, reflecting the metabolic activities of tissues and organs in the body. METHODS: Blood and urine samples were collected from six healthy adults. Exosomes were then enriched from these samples, followed by sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of exosomal miRNA. RESULTS: The comparative analysis of miRNAs in blood and urine revealed that 41 miRNAs were more abundant in blood, while 61 were found at lower levels. Notably, hsa-miR-934 was among th

Comparing effects of natural betaine and betaine hydrochloride on gut physiology in broiler chickens.

Betaine is a well-known component of poultry diets with various effects on nutritional physiology. For example, increased water retention due to the osmolytic effect of betaine increases the volume of the cell, thereby accelerating the anabolic activity, integrity of cell membrane, and overall performance of the bird. Betaine is a multifunctional component (trimethyl derivative) acting as the most efficient methyl group donor and as an organic osmolyte, which can directly influence the gastrointestinal tract integrity, functionality, and health. So far, nothing is known about the effect of bet

Physiological comparability of the harmonized INFOGEST in vitro digestion method to in vivo pig digestion.

Recently, a static in vitro digestion (IVD) protocol was published by Minekus and coworkers (Minekus et al., 2014) within the COST INFOGEST network. The protocol, concentrating on physiological enzyme activities had the main goal to improve the comparability of experimental data between labs. The protocol was validated in several inter-laboratory studies using skim milk powder (SMP) and indeed demonstrated improved harmonization compared with previous experiments with individual IVD protocols (Egger et al., 2016). Although the enzyme activities and salt concentrations of the harmonized protoco

Physiological significance of vitamin D produced in skin compared with oral vitamin D.

Since the discovery of vitamin D, it has been accepted that its physiological supply is either from food or by endogenous synthesis in skin exposed to solar UV light. Yet vitamin D is a component of very few foods and its supply as a natural nutrient is unable to maintain good vitamin D status for human populations. One aspect of vitamin D physiology that has been ignored is that the mechanisms for its transport and processing from these two sources are quite different. Excess intake of vitamin D causes hypercalcaemic toxicity. However, experiments with different animal species have shown that

Comparing nanoparticles for drug delivery: The effect of physiological dispersion media on nanoparticle properties.

Delivering therapeutics to disease sites is a challenge facing modern medicine. Nanoparticle delivery systems are of considerable interest to overcome this challenge, but these systems suffer from poor clinical translation. It is believed this is, in part, due to incomplete understanding of nanoparticle physico-chemical properties in vivo. To understand how nanoparticle properties could change following intravenous delivery, Au, Ag, Fe2O3, TiO2, and ZnO nanoparticles of 5, 20, and 50 nm were characterised in water and physiological fluids. The effects of the dispersion medium, concentration, a

Comparing the physiological and subjective effects of self-administered vs yoked cocaine in humans.

RATIONALE: Studies with laboratory animals demonstrating different effects of self- vs experimenter-administered drug suggest that the ability to control or predict drug delivery may be an important determinant of drug action. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed whether self-administered and yoked cocaine injections produce different effects in humans. METHODS: Ten inpatient volunteers with experience in using cocaine participated in a double-blind, yoked design during which four experimental test sessions were conducted. During two sessions, participants controlled if and when up to six 40 mg/70

Birds and bees do not express RAGE: comparative physiology and non-conventional model organisms hold the key to hyperglycemia tolerance.

Much of the diversity of life is fueled by sugar. The Maillard reaction and subsequent formation of advanced glycated end products (AGEs) are key contributors to hyperglycemia-associated pathologies. Interestingly, birds maintain glucose levels higher than mammals yet avoid diabetic complications. This resistance is attributed to adaptations such as reduced glycation susceptibility of serum proteins, efficient glucose transport mechanisms, and metabolic routing of excess glucose into fat rather than glycogen. Birds possess physiological traits including insulin resistance, constitutive glucose

What makes females walk at comparable speeds to males? Physical, physiological, or biomechanical factors.

BACKGROUND: Although males typically have longer limbs and greater muscle mass than females, previous studies have reported no significant sex differences in self-selected walking speed. This suggests that females may adopt alternative biomechanical strategies to compensate for their anatomical disadvantages. However, the specific mechanisms that enable females to achieve a walking speed comparable to males remain unclear. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-one young adults (76F,75M) performed a 3-min barefoot walking at their self-selected walking speed on a 10-m walkway. During walking, spatiot

A Comparative Analysis of Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Models for Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Tuberculosis Infections.

Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models have gained in popularity in the last decade in both drug development and regulatory science. PBPK models differ from classical pharmacokinetic models in that they include specific compartments for tissues involved in exposure, toxicity, biotransformation, and clearance processes connected by blood flow. This study aimed to address the gaps between the mathematics and pharmacology framework observed in the literature. These gaps included nonconserved systems of equations and compartment concentration that were not biologically relatable to th

Orbital Floor Fractures Comparing Different Kinds of Reconstruction: A Proposal for Restoration of Physiological Anatomy.

The most effective treatment for orbital fractures is still under debate and different strategies are proposed in the literature. All such strategies focus on reconstruction of the orbital structure, neglecting the main function of the medial and inferior walls, these latter being constructed so as to break during high energy trauma. The aim of the authors is to highlight the difference between different reconstructive techniques in an orbital fracture restoration, being inclined to favor repair over reconstruction of the orbital floor, assuming that a second trauma could happen and reconstruc
