Optimization of phytic acid-crosslinked chitosan microspheres for oral insulin delivery using response surface methodology.

Although oral administration is favorable mode of insulin delivery, it is the most challenging route, owing to poor oral bioavailability. In this study, a chitosan (CS)-based insulin delivery system was developed by ionic crosslinking with phytic acid (PA). CS-PA microspheres were optimized with different crosslinking conditions of CS and PA using response surface methodology to retain insulin during preparation and gastric digestion. Furthermore, the in vitro release profile, morphological structure, cytotoxicity, and intestinal permeability of the optimized microspheres, and its hypoglycemic

Chemical inhibition of INO1 reduces phytic acid in rice and wheat grains for enhanced micronutrient bioavailability.

Phytic acid (PA), the major phosphorus storage compound in cereal grains, chelates essential minerals such as iron and zinc, thereby preventing their absorption in the human intestine and contributing to micronutrient deficiencies. Myo-inositol 3-phosphate synthase 1 (INO1) is a key enzyme in PA biosynthesis, catalysing the pathway's first step and determining PA contents in cereal grains. Although the genetic modification of PA biosynthesis enzymes can reduce PA levels in grains by disrupting enzyme function, it often impairs germination and seedling growth. Here we used a plant chemical biol

Phytic acid-loaded polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel promotes wound healing of injured corneal epithelium through inhibiting ferroptosis.

As the important barrier of intraocular tissue, cornea is easy to suffer various kinds of injuries. Among them, acute alkali burn is a thorny ophthalmic emergency event, which can lead to corneal persistent epithelial defects, ulcers, and even perforation. Ferroptosis, a mode of regulatory cell death, has been found to play a key role in the process of corneal alkali burn, of which lipid peroxidation and intracellular iron levels are considered to be the possible therapeutic targets. To seek new effective treatments, the study herein focused on the occurrence of oxidative stress and ferroptosi

Phytic acid doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) modified with copper nanoparticles for enzymeless amperometric sensing of glucose.

A nanocomposite consisting of phytic acid (PA) that was doped with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene) (PEDOT) and modified with copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) was placed on a glassy carbon electrode and then applied in an enzymeless glucose sensor. The undulating PEDOT/PA composite has good conductivity and a large surface area, which was suitable as substrate for the uniform growth of CuNPs. The modified electrode typically operated at a potential near 0.55 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity towards direct oxidation of glucose in NaOH solution (the major limitation of thi

Preparation and corrosion resistance of magnesium phytic acid/hydroxyapatite composite coatings on biodegradable AZ31 magnesium alloy.

In this work, a magnesium phytic acid/hydroxyapatite composite coating was successfully prepared on AZ31 magnesium alloy substrate by chemical conversion deposition technology with the aim of improving its corrosion resistance and bioactivity. The influence of hydroxyapatite (HA) content on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the coatings was investigated. The results showed that with the increase of HA content in phytic acid solution, the cracks on the surface of the coatings gradually reduced, which subsequently improved the corrosion resistance of these coated magnesium alloy. A decrease in phytic acid content substantially affects the distribution of mineral elements within rice seeds.

Phytic acid (myo-inositol hexakisphosphate; InsP6) is the storage compound of phosphorus and many mineral elements in seeds. To determine the role of InsP6 in the accumulation and distribution of mineral elements in seeds, we performed fine mappings of mineral elements through synchrotron-based X-ray microfluorescence analysis using developing seeds from two independent low phytic acid (lpa) mutants of rice (Oryza sativa L.). The reduced InsP6 in lpa seeds did not affect the translocation of mineral elements from vegetative organs into seeds, because the total amounts of phosphorus and the oth

Phytic Acid-Polypeptide Network-Promoted Deposition of Photoactive Agents for the Construction of Synergistic Bactericidal Coatings.

Constructing antimicrobial surface coatings is essential to protect biomedical implants and devices from biological contamination or microbial infections. In this study, a simple technique was developed to prepare phytic acid (PA) and ε-polylysine (Ply)/hyperbranched polylysine (HPL) network coatings on implant surfaces due to the intrinsic surface affinity of PA and electrostatic attraction between Ply/HPL and PA. The PA-Ply (or PA-HPL) coating facilitates the encapsulation of diverse photoactive agents, including gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), graphene oxi

MRP Transporters and Low Phytic Acid Mutants in Major Crops: Main Pleiotropic Effects and Future Perspectives.

Phytic acid (PA) represents the major storage form of seed phosphate (P). During seed maturation, it accumulates as phytate salts chelating various mineral cations, therefore reducing their bioavailability. During germination, phytase dephosphorylates PA releasing both P and cations which in turn can be used for the nutrition of the growing seedling. Animals do not possess phytase, thus monogastric animals assimilate only 10% of the phytate ingested with feed, whilst 90% is excreted and may contribute to cause P pollution of the environment. To overcome this double problem, nutritional and env

Comparison of calcium hydroxide removal efficiency of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, phytic acid and N-acetylcysteine using sonic activation: a micro-CT study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), phytic acid (IP6), and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) with sonic activation on the removal efficiency of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from root canals with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. METHODS: Thirty-two extracted human mandibular first premolars were used in this study. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups based on the chelating agents to be used to remove Ca(OH)2 from the root canals (n=8). The root canals were prepared with the ProTaper rotary system up to X5. The spe

IMPACT OF GENISTEIN AND PHYTIC ACID ON THE VIABILITY AND PROLIFERATION ACTIVITY OF NASAL POLYPS' CELLS IN AN IN VITRO MODEL.

In developed countries, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps is one of the diseases that diminish patients' quality of life most significantly. Treatment of that often incurable disease is based on the steroids and surgery in patients who had failed thorough conservative management. It appears that the introduction of new treatment agents suppressing inflammation process and inhibiting cells' proliferation would be a valuable therapeutic option. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of genistein and phytic acid on the viability and growth rate of fibroblasts deri

The suppression of TdMRP3 genes reduces the phytic acid and increases the nutrient accumulation in durum wheat grain.

Micronutrient malnutrition affects more than half of the world population. Reduced bioavailability of microelements in the raw materials is considered one of the main causes of mineral deficiency in populations whose diet is largely based on the consumption of staple crops. In this context, the production of low phytic acid (lpa) cereals is a main goal of the breeding programs, as phytic acid (PA) binds essential mineral cations such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) precipitating in the form of phytate salts poorly digested by monogastric

Dynamic changes in the distribution of minerals in relation to phytic acid accumulation during rice seed development.

Phytic acid (inositol hexakisphosphate [InsP(6)]) is the storage compound of phosphorus in seeds. As phytic acid binds strongly to metallic cations, it also acts as a storage compound of metals. To understand the mechanisms underlying metal accumulation and localization in relation to phytic acid storage, we applied synchrotron-based x-ray microfluorescence imaging analysis to characterize the simultaneous subcellular distribution of some mineral elements (phosphorus, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, and copper) in immature and mature rice (Oryza sativa) seeds. This fine-imaging method can reve

Phytic Acid-Induced Oxygen Vacancies in Self-Supporting NiCo Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) impede efficient water electrolysis, motivating the development of robust, non-precious-metal electrocatalysts. Here, we construct a self-supported bimetallic metal-organic framework precatalyst (PAx-NiCo-BDC) through a two-step strategy using phytic acid (PA) for mild etching and multidentate coordination. This treatment introduces oxygen-vacancy-related coordination defects and regulates the precursor morphology. The optimized PA3-NiCo-BDC requires only 212 mV to reach 10 mA cm- 2, exhibits a Tafel slope of 20.2 mV dec- 1, and show

Phytic Acid as a Functional Nutrient: Unraveling its Role in Type 2 Diabetes Management and Obesity Control.

Herbal medicine, encompassing the use of various plant parts such as leaves, stems, flowers, roots, and seeds, has long been employed to prevent and treat diseases and continues to gain global recognition. Among the diverse bioactive compounds present in plants, phytic acid was traditionally viewed as an antinutrient due to its mineral-binding properties that reduce mineral absorption. However, emerging research has uncovered its significant health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic activities. This review focuses on the therapeutic potential of

One stone with two birds: Phytic acid-capped platinum nanoparticles for targeted combination therapy of bone tumors.

Targeted drug delivery to malignant bone lesions remains a challenging task in the treatment of bone tumors. In this article, we reported a naturally occurring phytic acid (PA) with both bone-targeting capability and anticancer activity. The PA-capped platinum nanoparticles showed high affinity to hydroxyapatite in vitro and in vivo, and maintained both the inherent anticancer ability of PA and photothermal effect of platinum nanoparticles. PA-capped nanoparticles displayed a 4-fold higher accumulation in the osteolytic lesions than sodium citrate-templated ones, and efficiently inhibited bone

Removal of aqueous Hg(II) and Cr(VI) using phytic acid doped polyaniline/cellulose acetate composite membrane.

Conductive composite membrane-phytic acid (PA) doped polyaniline (PANI)/cellulose acetate (CA) (PANI-PA/CA) was prepared in a simple and environmental-friendly method, in which aniline was blended with CA/PA solution and polymerized before the phase conversion. The resultant composite membranes were characterized by SEM, EDX, FTIR-ATR, BET and electrical resistance measurements. When used as adsorbent for Hg(II) and Cr(VI) ions, the prepared composite membrane exhibits excellent adsorption capability. The adsorption of Hg(II) and Cr(VI) follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and best fits
