While solar light is indispensable for sustenance of life, excessive exposure can cause several skin-related disorders. The UV part of solar radiation, in particular, is linked to disorders ranging from mild inflammatory effects of the skin to as serious as causing several different types of cancers. Changes in lifestyle together with depletion in the atmospheric ozone layer during the last few decades have led to an increase in the incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancers consisting of basal and squamous cell carcinomas are especially linked to the UVB part of solar radiation. Reducing excessiv

Astringency is a multimodal sensory experience resulting from complex interactions between chemical compounds and the oral environment, involving tactile, chemosensory and thermosensory pathways. Recent human studies have examined the role of the polymodal transient receptor potential (TRP) channels TRPV1 and TRPA1 in astringency perception; however, other thermo- and mechanosensitive TRP channels expressed in oral epithelial cells and in trigeminal neurons innervating the mouth and tongue may also contribute to this complex sensation. This study explored the effects of structurally distinct r

Estrogen receptors (ERs) are transcription factors with two subtypes: estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), which are essential for the maintenance of human health and play a regulatory role in common diseases such as breast cancer, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative disorders, liver injuries and lung cancers. A number of phytochemicals extracted from various fruits and vegetables have been demonstrated to exhibit estrogenic effects and are termed phytoestrogens. As modulators of ERs, phytoestrogens can be involved in the prevention and treatment of multiple diseases as

Breast cancer (BC) is linked to estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α) positive. Tamoxifen and other estrogen selective modulators have proven to be beneficial in slowing the progression of ER-α BC. However, tamoxifen resistance emerges as a result of long-term treatment and cancer development. Therefore, it is of interest to document data on the molecular docking analysis of phytochemicals targeting with Estrogen Receptor-alpha. The screening of the phytochemicals from the ZINC database (a total of 87133 compounds) against ER-α protein was completed. We show that ZINC69481841 and ZINC95486083bind str

For centuries, phytochemicals have been used to prevent and cure multiple health ailments. Phytochemicals have been reported to have antioxidant, antidiabetic, antitussive, antiparasitic, anticancer, and antimicrobial properties. Generally, the therapeutic use of phytochemicals is based on tradition or word of mouth with few evidence-based studies. Moreover, molecular level interactions or molecular targets for the majority of phytochemicals are unknown. In recent years, antibiotic resistance by microbes has become a major healthcare concern. As such, the use of phytochemicals with antimicrobi

Estrogen promotes the proliferation of breast cancer cells. Aromatase is the enzyme that converts androgen to estrogen. In tumors, the expression of aromatase is upregulated compared to surrounding non-cancerous tissue. In this study, we found that wine contains phytochemicals that are capable of suppressing aromatase. Red wine was shown to be much more effective than white wine in the suppression of aromatase activity. Whole wine, lyophilized wine, and heat-treated extracts were examined for aromatase inhibition in a human placenta microsomal assay. C18 Sep-Pak cartridge (Waters Co.) separati

Infectious diseases transmitted by food have become a major public health concern in recent years. In the USA alone, there are an estimated 6-33 million cases each year. The list of responsible agents continues to grow. In the past 20 years some dozen new pathogens that are primarily food-borne have been identified. Fruits and vegetables, often from the global food market, have been added to the traditional vehicles of food-borne illness; that is, undercooked meat, poultry, seafood, or unpasteurized milk. Such products are minimally processed and have fewer barriers to microbial growth such as

Chemotherapy has been used for cancer treatment already for almost 70 years by targeting the proliferation potential and metastasising ability of tumour cells. Despite the progress made in the development of potent chemotherapy drugs, their toxicity to normal tissues and adverse side effects in multiple organ systems as well as drug resistance have remained the major obstacles for the successful clinical use. Cytotoxic agents decrease considerably the quality of life of cancer patients manifesting as acute complaints and impacting the life of survivors also for years after the treatment. Toxic
