Response of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton abundance to warming, extreme rainfall events and nutrient enrichment.

Cyanobacterial blooms are an increasing threat to water quality and global water security caused by the nutrient enrichment of freshwaters. There is also a broad consensus that blooms are increasing with global warming, but the impacts of other concomitant environmental changes, such as an increase in extreme rainfall events, may affect this response. One of the potential effects of high rainfall events on phytoplankton communities is greater loss of biomass through hydraulic flushing. Here we used a shallow lake mesocosm experiment to test the combined effects of: warming (ambient vs. +4°C in

Mixture toxicity of the antifouling compound irgarol to the marine phytoplankton species Dunaliella tertiolecta.

This study examined the toxicity of irgarol, individually and in binary mixtures with three other pesticides (the fungicide chlorothalonil, and the herbicides atrazine and 2,4-D), to the marine phytoplankton species Dunaliella tertiolecta. Standard 96-h static algal bioassays were used to determine pesticide effects on population growth rate. Irgarol significantly inhibited D. tertiolecta growth rate at concentrations > or = 0.27 micro g/L. Irgarol was significantly more toxic to D. tertiolecta than the other pesticides tested (irgarol 96 h EC50 = 0.7 micro g/L; chlorothalonil 96 h EC50 = 64 m

Model predicts coastal paralytic shellfish toxicity in mussels from in situ phytoplankton concentrations.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Alexandrium catenella occur annually in the Gulf of Maine, leading to accumulation of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in bivalve mollusks and closure of harvesting areas. State monitoring programs in the region rely on weekly shellfish sampling and toxin analysis, requiring extensive effort with limited temporal resolution. With the development of autonomous in situ detection devices such as the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP), this study aimed to model shellfish toxicity using ESP-derived A. catenella counts to complement traditional monitoring programs u

Zooplankton sensitivity and phytoplankton regrowth for ballast water treatment with advanced oxidation processes.

The ballasting and de-ballasting of ships are two necessary operations with ballast water that provide stability for safe navigation. Empty ships must ballast tanks with water, which contains living organisms and subsequently carries them away from their original distribution. De-ballasting represents an input of still viable zooplankton, phytoplankton, and microorganisms in the destination port, leading to the introduction of alien species, and consequently, the introduction of organisms will alter the local biodiversity. Ballast water treatment is necessary to comply with the International M

Phytoplankton and water quality in a Mediterranean drinking-water reservoir (Marathonas Reservoir, Greece).

Phytoplankton and water quality of Marathonas drinking-water Reservoir were examined for the first time. During the study period (July-September 2007), phytoplankton composition was indicative of eutrophic conditions although phytoplankton biovolume was low (max. 2.7 mm³ l⁻¹). Phytoplankton was dominated by cyanobacteria and diatoms, whereas desmids and dinoflagellates contributed with lower biovolume values. Changing flushing rate in the reservoir (up to 0.7% of reservoir's water volume per day) driven by water withdrawal and occurring in pulses for a period of 15-25 days was associated with

Environmental drivers of phytoplankton community structure and diatom size restructuring in the Yellow Sea.

The Yellow Sea (YS) is a productive marginal sea undergoing substantial environmental change associated with warming and hydrographic variability. We analyzed total and size-fractionated phytoplankton assemblages using high-performance liquid chromatography pigment analysis and microscopy across 12 seasonal surveys in 2020, 2022, and 2023. Diatoms dominated throughout the study period (56.7 ± 15.0%), with cryptophytes subdominant in winter, spring, and autumn and cyanobacteria and prymnesiophytes more prominent under warmer, nutrient-imbalanced summer conditions. Realized niche analysis separa

The response of phytoplankton to pH-equilibrated ocean alkalinization: A mesocosm experiment with harbour waters.

Mitigating global warming requires urgent reductions in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and the development of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) strategies. pH-equilibrated Ocean Alkalinization (pHeqOA) has emerged as a promising method to enhance CO₂ sequestration while minimizing potential environmental risks. This study investigates the ecological impact of pHeqOA on phytoplankton communities through a mesocosm experiment in the Gulf of La Spezia (Italy) using local seawater treated with Limenet® technology. We assessed planktonic responses to different levels of bicarbonate-enriched seawater (Co

Phytoplankton Toxins and Their Potential Therapeutic Applications: A Journey toward the Quest for Potent Pharmaceuticals.

Phytoplankton are prominent organisms that contain numerous bioactive substances and secondary metabolites, including toxins, which can be valuable to pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and biotechnological industries. Studies on toxins produced by phytoplankton such as cyanobacteria, diatoms, and dinoflagellates have become more prevalent in recent years and have sparked much interest in this field of research. Because of their richness and complexity, they have great potential as medicinal remedies and biological exploratory probes. Unfortunately, such toxins are still at the preclinical and cli

Elucidating phytoplankton limiting factors in lakes and reservoirs of the Chinese Eastern Plains ecoregion.

Knowledge of phytoplankton limiting factors is essential for cost-efficient lake eutrophication management. Herein, we propose a statistical framework to explore site-specific phytoplankton limiting factors and their dependence on water depth (WD) in 54 lakes in the Chinese Eastern Plains ecoregion. First, the maximal chlorophyll a (Chla) response to total N (TN) or P (TP), representing a region-specific "standard" model where phytoplankton were primarily N- or P-limited, was quantified using a 95% quantile regression. Second, site-specific limiting factors were identified using analogical res

Inhibition of methylmercury uptake by freshwater phytoplankton in presence of algae-derived organic matter.

As the first step of methylmercury (MeHg) entry into the aquatic food webs, MeHg uptake by phytoplankton is crucial in determining the final human MeHg exposure risks. MeHg availability to plankton is regulated by dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water, while the extent of the impacts can vary largely based on the sources of DOM. Here, we investigated impacts of DOM sources on MeHg bioconcentration by three freshwater phytoplankton species (i.e. S. quadricauda, Chlorella sp., Microcystis elabens) in the laboratory system. We found that algae-derived DOM would prohibited the cellular MeHg

Effects of Nutrient Limitation on the Synthesis of N-Rich Phytoplankton Toxins: A Meta-Analysis.

Eutrophication has played a major role in the worldwide increase of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Higher input of key nutrients, such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), can stimulate the growth of harmful algal species in freshwater, estuarine, and coastal marine ecosystems. Some HAB-forming taxa, particularly several cyanobacteria and dinoflagellate species, are harmful through the production of N-rich toxins that have detrimental effects on the environment and human health. Here, we test how changes in nutrient availability affect N-rich toxin synthesis in cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates u

Phytoplankton community and chlorophyll a as trophic state indices of Lake Skadar (Montenegro, Balkan).

BACKGROUND, AIMS AND SCOPE: Phytoplankton, as a first step in trophic cascades of lakes, can be a good indicator of trophic states, considering that every environmental change affects this community and many species of this community are sensitive to changes, and that they response very quickly. In this study, we tried to assess and predict the trophic state of Lake Skadar according to phytoplankton data. METHODS: Water samples were collected using Ruttner sampling bottle. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, ph, conductivity and transparence were measured in situ using portable equipment. Nutrient

Spatiotemporal patterns of phytoplankton communities in coastal waters near the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant.

Coastal nuclear power plants are expanding rapidly, yet their ecological effects on phytoplankton in open coastal waters remain difficult to distinguish from strong seasonal background variability. We combined pre-operation surveys in 2015-2016 with monthly post-operation monitoring in 2019 around the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in the northern South China Sea. Reference-based difference-in-differences (DiD) models and continuous-distance analyses provided little evidence for persistent near-field post-operation divergence. Instead, cross-period changes were mainly characterised by broader env

Ocean acidification drives species-specific and time-dependent pigment responses in three phytoplankton taxa.

Phytoplankton are primary producers in marine ecosystems and play a central role in biogeochemical cycles, yet their physiological responses to altered seawater pH vary among taxa and over time. Here, we examined the effects of sustained pH manipulation on pigment composition, growth, and dark respiration in three ecologically important phytoplankton taxa - a diatom (Pseudo-nitzschia spp.), a dinoflagellate (Heterocapsa pygmaea), and a haptophyte (Emiliania huxleyi) - during a 15-day controlled laboratory experiment. Cultures were maintained at pH 8.1, 7.8, and 7.5, representing present-day an

Typhoon-induced stormwater drives nutrient dynamics and triggers phytoplankton blooms in Laizhou Bay, China.

In this study, we investigated the hydrological and ecological impacts of heavy rainfall caused by the storm Rumbia and Typhoon Lekima on Laizhou Bay (LZB) through land‒sea synchronous field surveys, online remote sensors, and simulated enclosure experiments. Within two weeks of Rumbia, approximately 9% and 16% of the annual riverine total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) fluxes, respectively, were transported to the LZB and the proportions were 17% and 35%, respectively, for Lekima. The land use on the watersheds increased the rates of land-derived nutrient loading and altered their bi

[Driving mechanisms and research challenges of phytoplankton community structure shifts in the coastal China seas.].

The coastal China seas are a representative marine region jointly influenced by global climate change and human activities. As primary producers in marine ecosystems, phytoplankton community structure strongly influences ecosystem stability. Here, we summarized the spatiotemporal patterns, driving mechanisms, and modeling approaches of phytoplankton community structure shifts in the coastal China seas. Phytoplankton communities exhi-bit pronounced regional heterogeneity. In nearshore waters, eutrophication and changing nutrient regimes have generally weakened diatom dominance and increased the

Variability in the Relationship Between Ocean Phytoplankton Diversity and Carbon Biomass Across Methods and Scales.

Diverse ecosystems on land and in the ocean are thought to be more productive, stable and resistant to change, but these relationships are highly variable across systems and scales. Although the productivity-diversity relationship (PDR) has been extensively explored on land, there are limited in-water observations of the PDR in marine ecosystems. In this work, the relationship between phytoplankton diversity and carbon biomass (as a proxy for productivity) was examined using a global in situ dataset. The shape of this relationship was evaluated for three metrics of phytoplankton diversity: pig
