The surgical correction of orbital deformities in patients with unilateral coronal craniosynostosis is challenging. Traditional techniques have shown the persistence of orbital flattening. This study presents a new strategy for remodeling the compromised orbit, using the piezosurgery technique, which improves the orbital curvature.

American journal of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics : official publication of the American Association of Orthodontists, its constituent societies, and the American Board of Orthodontics2019eng
A 16-year-old patient sought orthodontic correction for profile improvement and labially inclined maxillary incisors. She had Class II malocclusion, protrusive maxillary and mandibular incisors, and increased overjet and overbite with an American Board of Orthodontics discrepancy index value of 25. She was treated with maxillary premolar extractions and miniscrew-supported en masse retraction assisted with piezoincisions. Extraction spaces (7.5 mm per side) were closed with maximum anchorage in 10 months. Total treatment time was 23 months. Twenty-seven months after debonding, a pink spot was

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of piezoelectric devices during sinus elevation to determine the percentage of sinus membrane perforation and the time required to perform the antrostomy and elevation of the membrane. A total of 35 patients and 40 grafted sinuses were included. The parameters recorded were bony window length and height, bone thickness, osteotomy area, operative time, and number of perforations. Seven (17.5%) membrane perforations were observed, which were repaired with resorbable membranes. The mean length, height, and thickness of the osteotomy were 13.8

An implant displacement into the maxillary sinus could be a complication of implant surgery in the upper jaw. In such cases, implant removal is needed to avoid the occurrence of sinus pathologies. Piezosurgery techniques could assure safer management of such complications because of clear surgical visibility and a selective ability to cut. The aim of this report is to present a case of an implant-related oral surgery complication that was resolved by means of a piezosurgery technique.

Transposition of the mental nerve is a preprosthetic procedure that is effective for patients with hyperaesthesia caused by the effect of a dental prosthesis on the alveolar ridge. We present the case of a 74-year-old woman with pain and hyperaesthesia of the right inferior alveolar nerve caused by a dental prosthesis. Caudal transposition of the right mental nerve by piezosurgery resulted in postoperative neurosensory controls of the lower lip showing normal nerve function 2 months later.

Transverse maxillary deficiency requires surgical maxillary expansion when the midpalatal suture is closed. The midline osteotomy of the maxilla can lead to significant dental, gingival and bone complications. Technically, this osteotomy is usually performed using osteotomes, a burr or an oscillating saw, but is increasingly being replaced by piezosurgery. There are no published studies on the impact of piezoelectric devices on complications. This study tries to evaluate complications after median inter-incisors osteotomy (gingival recession, tooth loss, bone loss) with piezosurgery, and then

The piezosurgery has been used with increasing frequency and applicability by health professionals, especially those who deal with dental implants. The concept of piezoelectricity has emerged in the nineteenth century, but it was applied in oral surgery from 1988 by Tomaso Vercellotti. It consists of an ultrasonic device able to cut mineralized bone tissue, without injuring the adjacent soft tissue. It also has several advantages when compared to conventional techniques with drills and saws, such as the production of a precise, clean and low bleed bone cut that shows positive biological result

Deeply impacted supernumerary teeth in the anterior maxillary cannot be generally removed by the conventional labial or palatal surgical approach because of the risk of damaging the surrounding soft tissues and the possibility of injuring the roots of adjacent permanent teeth. In piezosurgery, bony tissues are selectively cut, thereby avoiding the soft tissue damage caused by rotary cutting instruments. We report the case of a 15-year-old Japanese boy from whom a deeply impacted supernumerary tooth in the anterior maxillary was safely removed through the floor of the nasal cavity. The surgical

Piezosurgery is a new innovating technique used to perform safe and effective osteotomies using piezoelectric ultrasonic vibrations. It was conceived by Tomaso Vercellotti, MD, DDS, and it was first reported for preprosthetic surgery, as alveolar crest expansion, sinus grafting, and, more recently, alveolar distraction. The purpose of this report was to introduce and justify the use of Piezosurgery to perform osteotomies during mandibular distraction in cases of hemifacial microsomia.

PURPOSE: Piezosurgery has been used widely in oral and maxillofacial surgery, but there has been no report systematically describing an osteotomy method with piezosurgery for complicated mandibular third molar removal. The aim of this study was to introduce 4 osteotomy methods using piezosurgery and evaluate their effects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of patients with a complicated impacted mandibular third molar requiring extraction. The predictor variable was the extraction technique. Four osteotomy methods using piezosurgery were tested according to different

Cranium bifidum occultum (CBO) is a rare congenital disease characterized by the anomalous ossification of parietal bones, which presents with a midline bone defect with no extrusion of intracranial content. Its association with craniosynostosis has been reported only a few times to date. The aim of this case report was to describe, for the first time, the association between presumed non-syndromic trigonocephaly and CBO, as well as the treatment of both conditions using the same surgical approach. This was done by performing fronto-orbital advancement and the split-bone technique using piezos

Styloid-carotid artery syndrome was first described by Eagle and is associated with cervical and facial pain caused by head movement resulting from mechanical compression of the carotid nerve plexus due to an elongated styloid process. The case of a 49-year-old man with persistent cervical pain, neurological symptoms and an elongated styloid process of 7.5 cm is reported here; this patient was successfully treated using Piezosurgery. In addition, a literature review is included.

Intradural petrous bone drilling has become a widespread practice, providing extended exposure in the removal of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) or petroclival tumors. Adjacent neurovascular structures are at risk, however, when drilling is performed in this deep and narrow area. Hence, this study evaluates the use of Piezosurgery (PS) as a non-rotating tool for selective bone cutting in CPA surgery. A Piezosurgery® device was used in 36 patients who underwent microsurgery for extra-axial CPA or petroclival tumors in our Neurosurgical Department between 2013 and 2019. The clinical and radiologica

BACKGROUND: Osteotomy is a crucial step in rhinoplasty, which can have a significant impact on the outcome. In addition to previous percutaneous (external perforating) and endonasal (internal) approaches, piezosurgery has been used in rhinoplasty practice since 2007. This experimental model was planned to compare the three osteotomy techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed on a caprine skull osteotomy model. Three groups were created from 12 animals, namely, endonasal continuous, external perforating, and piezosurgery groups. All the groups were evaluated for bone gaps, com

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a benign reactive lesion that exclusively arises from gingiva. The lesion may gain considerably large sizes and present peculiar clinical and radiographic features that would then allow it to be called a giant POF; in that case, its otherwise simple surgical extraction could create a challenge. Thus, we elect here, for the very first time, a plausible alternative for treating giant POF: piezosurgery followed by placement of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF).

Short lingual osteotomy is a useful method for the performance of sagittal split ramus osteotomy involving interference between the proximal and distal bone fragments when lateral differences exist in the setback distance. However, this procedure occasionally results in abnormal fracture and nerve injury; expert surgical skill is thus required. We herein describe a novel technique involving the use of an ultrasonic bone-cutting device (Piezosurgery; Mectron Medical Technology, Carasco, Italy) for vertical osteotomy posterior to the mandibular foramen. Successful short lingual osteotomy was per
