Cold-upregulated glycosyltransferase gene 1 (OsCUGT1) plays important roles in rice height and spikelet fertility.

Glycosyltransferases (GTs) regulate many physiological processes and stress responses in plants. However, little is known about the function of GT in rice development. In this study, molecular analyses revealed that the expression of a rice GT gene (Cold-Upregulated Glycosyltransferase Gene 1, CUGT1) is developmentally controlled and stress-induced. OsCUGT1 was knocked out by using the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) system to obtain the mutant oscugt1, which showed a severe dwarf and sterility phenotype. Further cytological analyses indicated that the dwarfi

Antimalarial plants with potential male-factor antifertility properties.

Malaria, caused mainly by Plasmodium falciparum among other Plasmodium species, is one of the main causes of death from parasitic diseases. Malaria is still a health problem mainly because of the cost of effective antimalarial drugs and the growing parasite resistance to conventional antimalarial drugs, making a great proportion of the people in malaria endemic countries dependent on plants for its treatment. Corollary, a large number of the rural populations consume antimalarial herbal preparations in large or excessive quantities despite the fact that it has been reported that some of them c

Classification and molecular mechanisms of gametophytic male sterility in Arabidopsis, rice and maize.

Plant male sterility (MS) is a fundamental model for studying reproductive development, yet a critical but often overlooked distinction exists between sporophytic male sterility (SMS) and gametophytic male sterility (GAMS). Unlike SMS, which is controlled by the sporophyte's genotype, GAMS is uniquely determined by the gametophyte's own genome, leading to subtle phenotypes that are challenging to identify. Here, we systematically classify 59 identified GAMS genes in Arabidopsis, rice, and maize into three functional categories based on their defective phenotypes during pollen development: Poll

The SbTDR gene is required for anther development and male fertility in Sorghum bicolor.

Anthers are essential in plant reproduction and are also crucial in agriculture, because hybrid seed production typically relies on the manipulation of male fertility. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is the fifth most produced grain crop in the world. However, relatively little is known about the genetic mechanisms that regulate anther development and male fertility in sorghum. Here, we report the morphological characterization of anther development in wild-type sorghum BTx623 and the Sorghum bicolor tapetal degeneration retardation (Sbtdr) mutant, as well as identification of the causal g

Strictosidine Synthase-like Gene NMS1 Is Required for Male Fertility in Rice by Regulating Tapetal Degradation.

Background: Male sterility is a critical trait for large-scale hybrid rice seed production, yet the genetic and molecular regulatory networks governing tapetal degradation during anther development remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to clone the causal gene underlying a novel rice non-pollen male sterility mutant and elucidate its role in tapetal development and microsporogenesis. Methods: The nms1 (non-pollen male sterility 1) sterile mutant was screened from the ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-mutagenized progeny of the elite indica restorer line Shuhui 498 (R498). Map-based cloni

Cyto-swapping in maize by haploid induction with a cenh3 mutant.

Maize mutants of the centromeric histone H3 (CENP-A/CENH3) gene can form haploids that inherit only chromosomes of the pollinating parent but the cytoplasm from the female parent. We developed CENH3 haploid inducers carrying a dominant anthocyanin colour marker for efficient haploid identification and harbouring cytoplasmic male sterile cytoplasm, a type of cytoplasm that results in male sterility useful for efficient hybrid seed production. The resulting cytoplasmic male sterility cyto-swapping method provides a faster and cheaper way to convert commercial lines to cytoplasmic male sterile co

SpMS1, a male sterility factor, interacts with SpAP1 to regulate unisexual flower development in dioecious spinach.

The emergence of unisexual flower is an important event during plant evolution. The molecular mechanism underlying the formation of unisexual flowers remains unclear in dioecious spinach. In this study, we identified the spinach MALE STERILITY1 gene, SpMS1, which serves as a masculine factor to regulate male fertility and sex reversion. Silencing SpMS1 led to stamen sterility in male flowers and the development of masculine traits in female flowers. Overexpression of SpMS1 in wild-type Arabidopsis resulted in sterile stamens and irregular pollen exine. Notably, ectopic expression of SpMS1 in A

Complementary and Alternative Management of Female Infertility in African Women: A Systematic Review Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Although African women constitute the majority of the continent's population and play a central role in economic development, their reproductive health needs remain overlooked. Infertility is often regarded as a tragedy, carrying profound psychosocial consequences. The resulting stress and societal pressure undermine women's well-being and drive many to pursue alternative treatment options in their search for motherhood. This systematic review aims to map the existing evidence on complementary approaches to the management of female infertility in Africa. METHODS: A systematic re

Phytochemicals: Alternative for Infertility Treatment and Associated Conditions.

Infertility and obstetric complications have become global health issues in the past few years. Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive even after twelve months or more of regular and unprotected intercourse. According to WHO data published in the year 2020, 186 million people have infertility globally. Factors leading to infertility are variable in both males and females. But some common factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and stress. Various synthetic drugs and treatment options are available that are effective in treating infertility, but their pro

Protective effects of phenolic phytochemicals on male fertility: a narrative review.

Infertility is a global health issue and is closely related to oxidative stress, which occurs when high concentrations of free radicals surpass the protective effects of antioxidant molecules and enzymes. Such imbalance causes damage to DNA, as well as cellular proteins and lipids, ultimately leading to the destruction of the blood-testis barrier. This, in turn, hinders spermatogenesis. Various plants and compounds have been employed in an attempt to reverse these damages, such as phenolic compounds. Therefore, this review aims to identify the main phytochemical phenolic compounds and their re

Integrated transcriptome and proteome analysis provides insights into the mechanism of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.).

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is critical in maximizing crop yield and quality by utilizing tobacco heterosis. However, the mechanism of tobacco CMS formation remains unknown. Using paraffin section observation, transcriptome sequencing, and TMT proteomic analysis, this study describes the differences in expression profiles in morphology, transcription, and translation between the sua-CMS tobacco line (MSYY87) and its corresponding maintainer line (YY87). According to the microspore morphology, MSYY87 began to exhibit abnormal microspore development during the early stages of germination an

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Reproductive problems are becoming the most predominant health care problems in many countries. World Health Organization (WHO), in 2012, also exemplified maternal illnesses, for instance, birth asphyxia and post birth difficulties are rising at an alarming rate. In addition, not all abnormalities of the human reproductive system have the same origin; the effects of reproductive problems would likely been affected by both male and female. For easy accessibility and affordability, medicinal plants are playing crucial role in primary healthcare services in India a

An E3 ubiquitin ligase CSIT2 controls critical sterility-inducing temperature of thermo-sensitive genic male sterile rice.

Thermo-sensitive genic male sterile (TGMS) lines are the core of two-line hybrid rice (Oryza sativa). However, elevated or unstable critical sterility-inducing temperatures (CSITs) of TGMS lines are bottlenecks that restrict the development of two-line hybrid rice. However, the genes and molecular mechanisms controlling CSIT remain unknown. Here, we report the CRITICAL STERILITY-INDUCING TEMPERATURE 2 (CSIT2) that encodes a really interesting new gene (RING) type E3 ligase, controlling the CSIT of thermo-sensitive male sterility 5 (tms5)-based TGMS lines through ribosome-associated protein qua

Chromosomal translocations are a significant driver of hybrid sterility in rice.

Hybrid sterility is a major barrier in exploiting hybrid vigor in rice grains produced by crossing distantly related parents. While genetic mechanisms such as the killer-protector system have been extensively studied, novel systems underlying hybrid sterility remain poorly characterized. Here, a novel hybrid sterility system governed by two tightly pseudolinked loci SGA1 (on chromosome 1) and SGA2 (on chromosome 2) is reported, which induces semi-sterility in male and female gametes during hybridization between the indica and japonica subspecies. Chromosomal translocations were proposed as the

High-generation near-isogenic lines combined with multi-omics to study the mechanism of polima cytoplasmic male sterility.

BACKGROUND: Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), which naturally exists in higher plants, is a useful mechanism for analyzing nuclear and mitochondrial genome functions and identifying the role of mitochondrial genes in the plant growth and development. Polima (pol) CMS is the most universally valued male sterility type in oil-seed rape. Previous studies have described the pol CMS restorer gene Rfp and the sterility-inducing gene orf224 in oil-seed rape, located in mitochondria. However, the mechanism of fertility restoration and infertility remains unknown. Moreover, it is still unknown how the

Co-expression network analysis of genes and networks associated with wheat pistillody.

Crop male sterility has great value in theoretical research and breeding application. HTS-1, whose stamens transformed into pistils or pistil-like structures, is an important male sterility material selecting from Chinese Spring three-pistil (CSTP) wheat. However the molecular mechanism of pistillody development in HTS-1 remains a mystery. RNA-seq data of 11 wheat tissues were obtained from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), including the stamens of CSTP and the pistils and pistillodic stamen of HTS-1. The Salmon program was utilized to quantify the gene expression level
