Nitric Oxide-Mediated Modulation of Photorespiratory Enzymes and Photochemical Components in Leaves of Pea Plants (Pisum sativum).

The photorespiratory metabolism safeguards photosynthesis against abiotic and biotic stress. Nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels rise in plants during abiotic stress. Low concentrations of NO or ROS are beneficial as signalling molecules, but they can be toxic to plant cells at high concentrations. ROS are known to modulate photorespiration; however, it is unclear whether NO affects photorespiratory enzymes and photochemical components simultaneously. We therefore used sodium nitroprusside (SNP) under dark, moderate light (ML), or high light (HL) conditions to simultaneo

Effects of Phytotoxic Nonenolides, Stagonolide A and Herbarumin I, on Physiological and Biochemical Processes in Leaves and Roots of Sensitive Plants.

Phytotoxic macrolides attract attention as prototypes of new herbicides. However, their mechanisms of action (MOA) on plants have not yet been elucidated. This study addresses the effects of two ten-membered lactones, stagonolide A (STA) and herbarumin I (HBI) produced by the fungus Stagonospora cirsii, on Cirsium arvense, Arabidopsis thaliana and Allium cepa. Bioassay of STA and HBI on punctured leaf discs of C. arvense and A. thaliana was conducted at a concentration of 2 mg/mL to evaluate phenotypic responses, the content of pigments, electrolyte leakage from leaf discs, the level of reacti

PLANT SUCCESS: The consequence of the hysteretic responses of leaves to ambient water vapor, carbon dioxide, light intensity, and temperature.

Plants account for the vast majority of the biomass on land. They first appear in the fossil record many millions of years ago. Some researchers have proposed that the obvious success of plant-life indicates that plants are "intelligent." Plant intelligence has been strongly challenged, however, because plants do not possess brain-like tissues similar to electrical neurons, axons, and synapses. The following paper argues that a plant leaf is more properly understood as being a kind of analog computer called a "crossbar array." The leaf's computational facility arises from how leaf stomata resp

Anti-melanogenic effects of extracellular vesicles derived from plant leaves and stems in mouse melanoma cells and human healthy skin.

Consumer interest in cosmetic industry products that produce whitening effects has increased demand for agents that decrease melanin production. Many such anti-melanogenic agents are associated with side effects, such as contact dermatitis and high toxicity, and also exhibit poor skin penetration. Considerable recent research has focused on plant-derived products as alternatives to chemotherapeutic agents that possess fewer side effects. In the current study, we investigated the anti-melanogenic effects of extracellular vesicles (EVs) extracted from leaves and stems of Dendropanax morbifera. U

A robust and efficient method for the extraction of plant extracellular surface lipids as applied to the analysis of silks and seedling leaves of maize.

Aerial plant organs possess a diverse array of extracellular surface lipids, including both non-polar and amphipathic constituents that collectively provide a primary line of defense against environmental stressors. Extracellular surface lipids on the stigmatic silks of maize are composed primarily of saturated and unsaturated linear hydrocarbons, as well as fatty acids, and aldehydes. To efficiently extract lipids of differing polarities from maize silks, five solvent systems (hexanes; hexanes:diethyl ether (95:5); hexanes:diethyl ether (90:10); chloroform:hexanes (1:1) and chloroform) were t

Methods and pitfalls of extracting condensed tannins and other phenolics from plants: Insights from investigations onEucalyptus leaves.

Optimal conditions for extraction of tannins and other phenolics from tree foliage and their subsequent storage rarely have been investigated. We investigated methods of drying leaves, optimal solvents, and the effects of light and temperature on the extractability and stability of condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) and total phenolics from leaves ofEucalyptus trees. Aqueous acetone was a better solvent than aqueous methanol for condensed tannins and total phenolics, but condensed tannins were less stable in aqueous acetone than aqueous methanol. Stability of condensed tannins also was decr

Turning Waste into Treasure: Invasive Plant Ambrosia trifida L Leaves as a High-Efficiency Inhibitor for Steel in Simulated Pickling Solutions.

High toxicity is the main reason for the limited application of traditional corrosion inhibitors. Herein, it is critical to find a green, efficient, and long-term stable alternative substitute for the hazardous and conventional corrosion inhibitor. Ambrosia trifida L is widely distributed in fields and riverside wetlands as an invasive plant in China. According to the concept of turning waste into treasure, the extract of Ambrosia trifida L leaves (ATL) has the potential to address this issue due to its natural origin and abundant presence of heterocyclic organics. Therefore, ATL, as a green c

Polyphenol-Enriched Extracts from Leaves of Mediterranean Plants as Natural Inhibitors of Monoamine Oxidase (MAO)-A and MAO-B Enzymes.

Background: Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are multifactorial disorders causing severe disability, rising with the increase in life expectancy. Currently, the identification of natural compounds useful against these disorders is becoming an urgent necessity. In this study, we used polyphenol-enriched extracts obtained from leaves of Mediterranean plants, which are important in animal feeding (Lotus ornithopodioides, Hedysarum coronarium, Medicago sativa) and in the human Mediterranean diet (Cichorium intybus). Objectives: The aims of this study were as follows: (i) tentative ident

Phytic acid in green leaves of herbaceous plants-temporal variation in situ and response to different nitrogen/phosphorus fertilizing regimes.

Phytic acid is the major storage compound for phosphorus (P) in plants. While accounting for up to 90 % in many seeds, usually only <10 % of total P is found in phytic acid in green leaves. This study follows up on the findings of a recent review of the occurrence of phytic acid in green leaves which revealed that (i) the current knowledge of phytic acid in leaves is mostly based on data from (fertilized) crop plants and (ii) the proportion of total P in phytic acid seems to decrease with improved P status in leaves in contrast to an increase in seeds and fruit. We studied five species of wild

Experimental design optimization of a simple and cost-effective voltammetric method for on-site determination of lead and cadmium in officinal plant leaves.

This study introduces an improved method for the on-site quantification of cadmium and lead in officinal plants using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DP-ASV) with a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by an in-situ mercury film (iMF-GCE). Initial experiments, conducted with one-variable-at-the-time (OVAT) approach, have provided suboptimal recovery rates and linearity, factors refined later through a systematic experimental approach involving two different designs: Plackett-Burman and Face Centered Composite Design (FCCD). Certified reference materials confirmed the method'

Pentas longiflora Oliv. (Rubiaceae), a plant used in the treatment of Pityriasis Versicolor in Rwanda: Chemical composition and standardization of leaves and roots.

In Rwanda, the roots of Pentas longiflora Oliv. (Rubiaceae) have been used for a long time to treat Pityriasis versicolor. However, many people reported the use of leaves instead of roots. This research was conducted to compare the phytochemical composition and establish chromatographic methods for the standardization of roots and leaves extracts of P. longiflora. During this process, three new pentalongin glycosides (pentalonginoside A, pentalonginoside B, and pentalonginoside C) and two known glycosides of the same type (harounoside and clarinoside), as well as rutin, luteolin-7-rutinoside w

Deciphering foliar uptake mechanisms of organophosphate esters in plant leaves: Molecular structure-cuticular wax interactions revealed by experimental evidence and machine learning.

The foliar uptake and inward penetration mechanisms of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in plant leaves from agricultural systems remain unclear. This study systematically investigated OPE foliar uptake on excised leaves from nine plant species (crops and ornamental woody plants). Aryl-OPEs exhibited rapid initial absorption (uptake rate constant of pseudo-first-order kinetics, k = 0.35-1.45 h⁻¹), whereas Cl-OPEs showed higher final accumulation (0.07-0.38 nmol per 25 cm²).
