The dimensionality of plant-plant competition.

To avoid extinction, every species must be able to exploit available resources at least as well as all other species in its community. Theory predicts that, the more distinct the niches of competing species, the more species that can coexist together. However, both theoretical and experimental studies define a priori the nature and number of resources over which species presumably compete. It therefore remains unclear whether species in empirically realistic contexts actually fill all of the niches available to them. Here, we show how the interactions between co-occurring species can be used t

Evidence for electrotropism in some plant species.

The ever-present global Atmospheric Electrical Field (AEF) is used by many plant species. There are many natural habitats with electrotropic plants and habitats with no AEF. The plants growing there are not electrotropic, like the plants growing under the canopies of the trees or the Arecibo radio telescope. Examples are given of different plants which belong to one or the other class, and the criteria how to distinguish them. In addition to natural habitat observations, laboratory experiments were run in search of the sensitivity of electrotropic effect to different electric field intensities

Ferroptosis in plants: Regulatory mechanisms and potential applications from plant physiology to human diseases.

Ferroptosis is a novel form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation, which is mediated by multi-pathway cascades involving dysregulated iron metabolism, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) oxidation, and impaired antioxidant defense systems. This form of cell death is closely implicated in the pathophysiology of various human diseases, including cancer, neurological disorders, ischemia-reperfusion injury, renal damage, and hematological diseases. Recent studies have expanded the understanding of ferroptosis to plants, where it plays pivotal roles in respondin

HCN production and hydroxynitrile lyase: a natural activity in plants and a renewed biotechnological interest.

Over 3,000 plant species are cyanogenic. Cyanogenesis is defined as the hydroxynitrile lyase catalysed release of a cyanide group in the form of HCN and the corresponding aldehyde or ketone. When a plant is attacked, HCN released is a self defence mechanism. A special characteristic of enzymatic reactions is that all enzymatic reactions are reversible-hydroxynitrile lyases can also be used for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure cyanohydrins which are of great importance in industry. This article presents a comprehensive review of the role of hydroxynitrile lyases, both in nature and indust

Effects of oxybarbiturates on the germination behaviour of Impatiens bolstii pollen.

Swelling of and cytoplasmic streaming within the grain, germination pore expansion, and pollen tube emergence, in that order, constitute the normal germination pattern of Impatiens holstii pollen grains. This normal sequence of events becomes manifest when the pollen grains are placed on water-agar, barbituric acid-agar, and on barbital-agar media whereas this sequence of events is interfered with when the pollen grains are incubated on amytal-agar or on seconal-agar media. Evidence is presented which demonstrates that the normal sequence of events which make up the normal germination pattern

Differential resource acquisition strategies of herbaceous and woody plants in temperate forests.

BACKGROUND: Functional traits are pivotal indicators of plant ecological strategies, regulating resource acquisition and allocation through traits trade-offs. However, few studies have explored how trait coordination underlying resource-use strategies vary across plant life-forms from different trait dimensionalities. In this study, we examined 14 leaf functional traits in 81 plant species (27 herbaceous and 54 woody species) from the southwestern Qinling Mountains, including 6 structural traits (leaf area, leaf thickness, leaf mass per area, leaf dry matter content, leaf tissue density, and l

The pivotal discovery of a major plant adaptation to a changing climate.

The discovery of the C4 pathway laid the foundations of a revolution in plant biochemistry. The Hatch and Slack paper published in the Biochemical Journal described a specialized pathway of photosynthetic metabolism that minimizes the loss of carbon and nitrogen to maximize efficiency in hot, dry environments. Since that time, there has been an enormous increase in our understanding of the anatomical and biochemical modifications that facilitate C4 photosynthesis in different species. A key feature is the concentration of CO2 in the vicinity of the carboxylating enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphat

Interplay between hydrogen sulfide and other signaling molecules in the regulation of guard cell signaling and abiotic/biotic stress response.

Stomatal aperture controls the balance between transpirational water loss and photosynthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. Stomata are surrounded by pairs of guard cells that sense and transduce environmental or stress signals to induce diverse endogenous responses for adaptation to environmental changes. In a recent decade, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been recognized as a signaling molecule that regulates stomatal movement. In this review, we summarize recent progress in research on the regulatory role of H2S in stomatal movement, including the dynamic regulation of phytohormones, ion homeostas

Revealing on hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide signals co-ordination for plant growth under stress conditions.

In the recent times, plants are facing certain types of environmental stresses, which give rise to formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxides, superoxide anions and so on. These are required by the plants at low concentrations for signal transduction and at high concentrations, they repress plant root growth. Apart from the ROS activities, hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and nitric oxide (NO) have major contributions in regulating growth and developmental processes in plants, as they also play key roles as signaling molecules and act as chief plant immune

Cytokinins and plant immunity: old foes or new friends?

Cytokinins are plant growth promoting hormones involved in the specification of embryonic cells, maintenance of meristematic cells, shoot formation and development of vasculature. Cytokinins have also emerged as a major factor in plant-microbe interactions during nodule organogenesis and pathogenesis. Microbe-originated cytokinins confer abnormal hypersensitivity of cytokinins to plants, augmenting the sink activity of infected regions. However, recent findings have shed light on a distinct role of cytokinins in plant immune responses. Plant-borne cytokinins systemically induce resistance agai

Parallel adaptations and common host cell responses enabling feeding of obligate and facultative plant parasitic nematodes.

Parallel adaptations enabling the use of plant cells as the primary food source have occurred multiple times in distinct nematode clades. The hallmark of all extant obligate and facultative plant-feeding nematodes is the presence of an oral stylet, which is required for penetration of plant cell walls, delivery of pharyngeal gland secretions into host cells and selective uptake of plant assimilates. Plant parasites from different clades, and even within a single clade, display a large diversity in feeding behaviours ranging from short feeding cycles on single cells to prolonged feeding on high

Microbial partnerships and molecular mechanisms in plant stress physiology for climate-resilient and sustainable farming.

Plant-microbial partnerships and their underlying molecular mechanisms are indispensable, natural drivers of improved nutrient acquisition and stress tolerance in the face of climate-driven environmental challenges. Modern multi-omics tools, when coupled with artificial intelligence and synthetic biology, enable the precise design of targeted bioinoculants and synthetic microbial consortia. Translating these advanced microbiome-based strategies into scalable, field-level agricultural applications provides a sustainable path toward securing global food production while maintaining soil health.

The rate of photosynthetic induction across different light intensities can be approximated using the light response curve of photosynthesis.

While natural light in plant canopies often fluctuates and shows a large range of possible intensities, the rate of photosynthetic induction is often measured at only two light intensities. This prompts the question as to how the relationship between different light intensities and the rate of photosynthetic induction can be characterized. Using hundreds of measurements of photosynthetic induction at various light intensities in leaves of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), we found linear relationships between the time to reach 50% of full photosynthetic induction (t50) and the difference between

Nanoscale materials and NO-ROS homeostasis in plants: trilateral dynamics.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have garnered increasing attention for their applications in agriculture and plant science, particularly for their interactions with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (•NO). NPs, owing to their novel physicochemical properties, can be used to uniquely modulate ROS levels, enabling great control over redox homeostasis and signaling cascades. In addition, NPs may act as carriers for •NO donors, thus facilitating controlled and synchronized release and targeted delivery of •NO within plant systems. This opinion article provides insights into the current state of k

Interaction of Chemical Pesticides and Their Formulation Ingredients with Microbes Associated with Plants and Plant Pests.

Chemical pesticides and their formulation ingredients can have unintended effects on microbes associated with plants and plant pests. These effects can be due to direct effects on the microbes or to effects on crops or weeds that subsequently affect the microbes. In addition to fungicides, some insecticides, herbicides, and formulation compounds are toxic to plant pathogenic microbes, as well as to potentially beneficial microbes, such as those that infect insect pests. These chemicals, especially herbicides, can also indirectly affect microbes through their effects on crops and weeds. For exa

Understanding the Complexity of Iron Sensing and Signaling Cascades in Plants.

Under iron-deficient conditions, plants induce the expression of a set of genes involved in iron uptake and translocation. This response to iron deficiency is regulated by transcriptional networks mediated by transcription factors (TFs) and protein-level modification of key factors by ubiquitin ligases. Several of the basic helix-loop-helix TFs and the HRZ/BTS ubiquitin ligases are conserved across graminaceous and non-graminaceous plants. Other regulators are specific, such as IDEF1 and IDEF2 in graminaceous plants and FIT/FER and MYB10/72 in non-graminaceous plants. IMA/FEP peptides positive

Strange plants and the weirding climate: parasitic plant physiology under climate change.

Parasitic flowering plants are often seen as keystone species due to the broad influence they exert on communities worldwide. Positive and negative effects associated with parasitic plant infestation have been documented for a variety of species in multiple locations and under different experimental conditions. However, the impact of the different drivers of climate change on these plants has only recently begun to be analyzed in more detail. In this context, most studies have dealt with modeling future distribution ranges of parasite species and assessing potential ecological impacts. Buildin

Selective egg cell polyspermy bypasses the triploid block.

Polyploidization, the increase in genome copies, is considered a major driving force for speciation. We have recently provided the first direct in planta evidence for polyspermy induced polyploidization. Capitalizing on a novel sco1-based polyspermy assay, we here show that polyspermy can selectively polyploidize the egg cell, while rendering the genome size of the ploidy-sensitive central cell unaffected. This unprecedented result indicates that polyspermy can bypass the triploid block, which is an established postzygotic polyploidization barrier. In fact, we here show that most polyspermy-de
