Biotechnological potential of plant growth-promoting bacteria from the roots and rhizospheres of endemic plants in ironstone vegetation in southeastern Brazil.

Microorganisms associated with plants have a great biotechnological potential, but investigations of these microorganisms associated with native plants in peculiar environments has been incipient. The objective of this study was to analyze the plant growth-promoting bacteria potential of cultivable bacteria associated with rare plants from the ferruginous rocky fields of the Brazilian Iron Quadrangle. The roots and rhizospheres of nine endemic plants species and samples of a root found in a lateritiric duricrust (canga) cave were collected, the culturable bacteria isolated and prospected for d

Selenium nanoparticles as a rooting agent of rice plants to tolerate low phosphate stress.

Nanoparticles offer promising applications in agriculture due to their unique physicochemical properties. This study investigated selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) as a rooting agent to improve rice tolerance to low phosphate stress. IR64 rice was grown in media with varying SeNP concentrations (0-25 ppm), and plants were analyzed at 2 and 6 weeks for phenotypic traits, histology, biochemistry, and gene expression. At 2 weeks, 25 ppm SeNPs led to a threefold increase in root length versus untreated controls. Histological analysis revealed increased root perimeter and diameter, along with reduced

Beyond the root: microbial partners extend plant metabolic pathways to mobilize iron.

Under iron (Fe)-limiting conditions, Arabidopsis thaliana roots secrete coumarins, phenylpropanoid-derived secondary metabolites that can mobilize sparingly available Fe and shape the composition of the root-associated microbiome. Recent studies show that microbial partners can act on root-secreted coumarins to produce forms with higher Fe-mobilization capacity. Besides providing a mechanistic understanding of the positive interaction of soil microbiota to improved plant Fe nutrition, these findings provide new evidence that the functional boundaries of plant metabolic pathways extend into the

Root Transporters Shape Rhizosphere Microbiomes to Enhance Nitrogen Acquisition Efficiency in Plants.

Root nitrogen acquisition is a central belowground process that determines how efficiently plants capture nitrogen from the rhizosphere and influences fertilizer demand and environmental nitrogen losses. Root N transporters, including nitrate, ammonium, amino acid, and peptide transporters, provide the molecular basis for inorganic and organic N uptake. However, root N acquisition is not determined solely by plant transport systems but is also shaped by rhizosphere microbial communities that regulate N mobilization, transformation, and availability. In addition to bacteria and archaea, saprotr

Quantum Light Imaging of the Plant Root─Rhizobacteria─System Using iLOV Fluorescence.

It has been demonstrated recently that the use of specific quantum states of light for two-photon microscopy can lead to a substantial reduction of the intensity of light needed for the imaging of biological objects. This opens new ways to better understand the delicate mechanisms of the interactions of living organisms in the rhizosphere on an extended time scale without optical damage or alteration of their native behavior. Herein, we report a successful realization of entangled two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy of wheat plant roots and a set of biological samples, including purifie

Diversity and Plant Growth-Promoting Properties of Rhodiola rosea Root Endophytic Bacteria.

Plants inhabiting environments with suboptimal growth conditions often have a more pronounced capacity to attract and sustain microbial communities that improve nutrient absorption and expand abiotic stress tolerance. Rhodiola rosea L. is a succulent plant of the Crassulaceae family adapted to survive in sandy or rocky soils or dry tundra. The aim of the present study was to investigate the diversity and plant growth-stimulating potential of R. rosea endophytic microbiota. Metataxonomic analysis of the bacterial diversity in the rhizome of R. rosea revealed 108 families. Among these, three fam

The many facets of protein ubiquitination and degradation in plant root iron-deficiency responses.

Organisms need to deal with the absolute requirement for metals and also their possible toxicity. This is achieved through an intricate network of signaling pathways that are integrated to ultimately fine-tune iron uptake and metabolism. The mechanisms by which plants cope with iron limitation and the associated genomic responses are well characterized. On top of this transcriptional cascade is another level of regulation involving the post-translational protein modification and degradation. The ubiquitination and/or degradation of several transcription factors in the iron-deficiency signaling

Role of root exudates on assimilation of phosphorus in young and old Arabidopsis thaliana plants.

The role of root exudates has long been recognized for its potential to improve nutrient use efficiency in cropping systems. However, studies addressing the variability of root exudates involved in phosphorus solubilization across plant developmental stages remain scarce. Here, we grew Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings in sterile liquid culture with a low, medium, or high concentration of phosphate and measured the composition of the root exudate at seedling, vegetative, and bolting stages. The exudates changed in response to the incremental addition of phosphorus, starting from the vegetative st

The physiological mechanism underlying root elongation in response to nitrogen deficiency in crop plants.

In response to low nitrogen stress, multiple hormones together with nitric oxide signaling pathways work synergistically and antagonistically in crop root elongation. Changing root morphology allows plants to adapt to soil nutrient availability. Nitrogen is the most important essential nutrient for plant growth. An important adaptive strategy for crops responding to nitrogen deficiency is root elongation, thereby accessing increased soil space and nitrogen resources. Multiple signaling pathways are involved in this regulatory network, working together to fine-tune root elongation in response t

Root system response in Argania spinosa plants under drought stress and recovery.

The argane tree is a remarkable essence by its botanical interest and its socioeconomic value. It is endemic species in the southwest of Morocco, where prolonged drought stress may occur. Although its tolerance has been commonly attributed to various mechanisms at the whole plant, the root system has a main role in the whole process of adaptation. We studied in argane tree plants the change in hydraulic conductivity, electrolyte leakage in root as well as root growth under drought stress and recovery. Our findings showed that the root hydraulic conductivity (Lpr) value significantly decreased

Composite Cucurbitaceae Plants as a Tool to Study Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms of Root Development.

Composite plants are a convenient model for obtaining a whole plant with undisturbed regulatory links between the shoot and root system, while the roots carry the properties specified by the researcher. This approach allows expressing transgenes only in roots, which in some cases may be preferable over the expression of transgenes in all organs of a non-chimeric transgenic plant. Composite plants have been widely used to study the nitrogen fixation process, mycorrhizal symbioses, and the interaction of plant roots with various pathogens. The current protocol for Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediat

[Mechanisms of Rhizosphere Microorganisms in Regulating Plant Root System Architecture in Acidic Soils].

Red soil occupies an important position in China's agriculturally cultivated land resources. However, its low pH value, high aluminum concentration, and inefficient phosphorus utilization limit the productivity of acidic red soil farmland. Plant roots exhibit remarkable plasticity, capable of absorbing water and nutrients and modulating root system architecture in response to biotic and abiotic stresses, either autonomously or through rhizosphere microorganisms. This study primarily investigates the regulatory effects of rhizosphere microorganisms, including plant growth-promoting rhizobacteri

The impact of aminoglycoside exposure on soil and plant root-associated microbiota: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to aminoglycosides, a class of potent bactericidal antibiotics naturally produced by soil microorganisms and commonly used in agriculture, has the potential to cause shifts in the population dynamics of microorganisms that impact plant and soil health. In particular, aminoglycoside exposure could result in alterations of the soil and plant root-associated bacterial species diversity and richness due to their potent inhibitory action on microbial growth, the creation of selective conditions for the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or a reduction in the abilit

Nitrogen forms and metabolism affect plant defence to foliar and root pathogens in tomato.

Nitrogen (N) influences a myriad of physiological processes while its effects on plant defences and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, the interaction between tomato and pathogens was examined under four N regimes (sole NO3- or mixed NO3- /NH4+ of total 1 and 7 mM N, denoting low and high N regimes, respectively) followed by inoculation with two bacterial pathogens, Pseudomonas syringae and Ralstonia solanacearum. Tomato immunity against both pathogens was generally higher under low N as well as NO3- as the sole N source. The disease susceptibility was reduced by silencing N

Plant-Microbe Interaction: Transcriptional Response of Bacillus Mycoides to Potato Root Exudates.

Beneficial plant-associated bacteria play an important role in promoting growth and preventing disease in plants. The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as biofertilizers or biocontrol agents has become an effective alternative to the use of conventional fertilizers and can increase crop productivity at low cost. Plant-microbe interactions depend upon host plant-secreted signals and a reaction hereon by their associated bacteria. However, the molecular mechanisms of how beneficial bacteria respond to their associated plant-derived signals are not fully understood. Asses

[FTIR spectroscopic characterization of chromium-induced changes in root cell wall of plants].

Due to its wide industrial use, chromium is considered a serious environmental pollutant. Contamination of soil and water by chromium (Cr) is of recent concern. Chromium mainly accumulates in root in plants, and the change in compounds of the root cell wall have a close relation with the Cr accumulation. Compared with the other identification methods, the identification of the Chinese traditional and herbal drugs using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer with OMNI collector is simple and convenient, fast and accurate. In the present paper, the spectra of cell wall of Cr-treated root and co
