Assessing the Impact of Weeds on Rice Growth and Productivity: Experimental Designs and Quantitative Approaches.

Weeds represent one of the most critical biotic stress factors in rice-based cropping systems, often causing severe yield losses. Understanding crop-weed interactions under both current and projected climate change scenarios is essential for safeguarding rice productivity. Weed species, such as Echinochloa colona and Alternanthera paronychioides, exert profound competitive effects on rice, with early crop growth stages being particularly vulnerable. During this period, rice seedlings encounter simultaneous challenges of weed interference and abiotic stresses, such as water limitation, resultin

Design and synthesis of strigolactone analogues and mimics containing indolin-2-one scaffold for the Phelipanche control.

BACKGROUND: The broomrapes are root-parasitic weeds widely distributed in the temperate zone area. The effective management on the Phelipanche and Orobanche parasitic weeds still remains challenging to date. RESULTS: Novel strigolactone (SL) analogues (X series) and mimics (O series) derived from indolin-2-one were designed and synthesized. Of them, compound O-3 showed nearly ten-fold higher seed germination activity (median effective concentration (EC50) = 0.0066 μm) towards Phelipanche aegyptiaca seeds compared to the control GR24. Moreover, it also showed prominent seed germination activit

Discovery of Natural Rosin-Based Herbicide Agent to Control Echinochloa crusgalli for Sustainable Weed Management.

Natural rosin derivatives offer a promising scaffold for developing low-toxicity herbicides to address environmental concerns triggered by synthetic agrochemicals. In this research, a series of dehydroabietyl-hydrazide-based derivatives (3a-l) were synthesized using dehydroabietic acid as a lead compound. The herbicidal activities of these derivatives were evaluated against Echinochloa crusgalli, Sorghum halepense, Portulaca oleracea, and Amaranthus caudatus L. weeds. The result indicated that 3e exhibited broad-spectrum activity, particularly against barnyard grass root growth, with 91.0% inh

Alternanthera sessilis: Uncovering the nutritional and medicinal values of an edible weed.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Weeds are often considered undesirable as they interfere with the habitat of native plants, and therefore they are underestimated and underutilised. In fact, some edible weeds have beneficial nutritional and medicinal values. Alternanthera sessilis (L.) R. Br. ex DC., an edible medicinal weed is a species of the Amaranthaceae family that consists of two cultivars: green and red. Local communities in different regions have traditionally consumed the plants as food and medicine, with the green cultivar being applied to relieve pain, treat wound healing, dysentery,

Environmental risk assessment of compost prepared from salvinia, egeria densa, and alligator weed.

Approximately 70,000 m(3) of salvinia (Salvinia molesta) was removed from the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, during 2004. This study assessed the risks associated with applying compost prepared from aquatic weeds (AWC) to land, namely, survival and spread of aquatic and terrestrial weeds, eutrophication of waterways, accumulation of heavy metals and phytotoxicity. The results demonstrate composting is an effective method of reducing the viability of aquatic and terrestrial weeds. However, mortality of alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides), which was used as a

Physiological Analysis and Proteome Quantification of Alligator Weed Stems in Response to Potassium Deficiency Stress.

The macronutrient potassium is essential to plant growth, development and stress response. Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) has a high tolerance to potassium deficiency (LK) stress. The stem is the primary organ responsible for transporting molecules from the underground root system to the aboveground parts of the plant. However, proteomic changes in response to LK stress are largely unknown in alligator weed stems. In this study, we investigated the physiological and proteomic changes in alligator weed stems under LK stress. First, the chlorophyll and soluble protein content and S

Kresoxim-methyl Derivatives: Synthesis and Herbicidal Activities of (Pyridinylphenoxymethylene)phenyl Methoxyiminoacetates.

A series of new kresoxim-methyl derivatives, (pyridinylphenoxymethylene)phenyl methoxyiminoacetates, were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Although derived from a fungicide, the bioassays indicated that several new compounds had good herbicidal activities. At 37.5 g a.i./ha, compound 5c showed 100% inhibition against Abutilon theophrasti, Amaranthus retroflexus, and Eclipta prostrata, which was better than mesotrione. Compound 5e had a broad herbicidal spectrum against broadleaf weeds. The present work indicates that 5c and 5e

Allelopathic Potency and an Active Substance from Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis.

Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis is widely planted as an ornamental and medicinal plant in Indonesia. On the other hand, in some other countries this plant is classified as a noxious weed. As a harmful weed, A. cordifolia is reported to have the ability to smother all native vegetation, collapse canopies of tall trees, cultivate as a ground cover and disrupt native seedling development. There is no available information about the involvement of any allelochemicals from A. cordifolia related to these issues. The present study evaluated the allelopathic effect by isolating and identifying th

Effect of weeding methods and weeding time on flushing and flowering of cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) in South-Eastern, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Weeds are important biotic agents that have a big impact on plant yields and growth. In southern Tanzania, the timing and effects of weeding were studied in relation to cashew flushing and flowering. METHODS: For the study, three cashew development centers (CDC) were chosen. Herbicides, manual hoeing (tillage), slashing, and scratching were the four weeding methods allocated. Two clones (AC4 and AZA17) of cashew trees that were 10 years old were treated. Phase 1 (after harvest), Phase 2 (during the rainy season), and Phase 3 (before to flushing of the cashew flowers) are the three

Niche and interspecific relationship of alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) after a hundred years' invasion in central China.

Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.) is considered one of the worst invasive weeds in China. It was introduced to east China in the late 18th century and gradually spread to central China by the 1930s. Over the course of about a century, it occupied a quite lot of wetlands, agricultural ditches, fishery ponds, and croplands in Central China along the Yangtze River. To reveal the ecological characteristics of alligator weed in the agricultural zone, a field survey was contacted in the mid-Yangtze River region of Hubei Province. A total of 72 species of vascular plants we

Favorable fragmentation: river reservoirs can impede downstream expansion of riparian weeds.

River valleys represent biologically rich corridors characterized by natural disturbances that create moist and barren sites suitable for colonization by native riparian plants, and also by weeds. Dams and reservoirs interrupt the longitudinal corridors and we hypothesized that this could restrict downstream weed expansion. To consider this "reservoir impediment" hypothesis we assessed the occurrences and abundances of weeds along a 315-km river valley corridor that commenced with an unimpounded reach of the Snake River and extended through Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon reservoirs and dams

The Toothpick Project: commercialization of a virulence-selected fungal bioherbicide for Striga hermonthica (witchweed) biocontrol in Kenya.

The high-level view of global food systems identifies three all-encompassing barriers to the adoption of food systems solutions: knowledge, policy, and finance. These barriers, and the siloed characteristics of each of these, have hindered the development and adoption of microbial herbicides. How knowledge, policy, and finance are related to the Toothpick Project's path of commercializing a new bioherbicide, early in the scope of the industry, is discussed here. The Toothpick Project's innovation, developed over four decades and commercialized in 2021, uses strains of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.
