BACKGROUND: Contact allergy to plants, particularly Compositae, presents with dermatitis and is diagnosed with skin patch testing. Sesquiterpene lactone mix is a common screening allergen for plant allergy. The rate of plant allergen sensitisation in New Zealand, which is affected by local horticultural factors, has not previously been documented.
AIMS: To investigate the rate of plant allergen sensitisation in New Zealand's regional population, characterise common allergens and reassess appropriate allergens for patch testing.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patient demographics and patc

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plant roots can influence the germination and growth of neighbouring plants. However, little is known about the effects of root VOCs on plant-herbivore interactions of neighbouring plants. The spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) constitutively releases high amounts of sesquiterpenes into the rhizosphere. Here, we examine the impact of C. stoebe root VOCs on the primary and secondary metabolites of sympatric Taraxacum officinale plants and the resulting plant-mediated effects on a generalist root herbivore, the white grub Melolontha melolontha. We sh

Protein synthesis rate is distinct from steady-state protein abundance and must be measured independently to understand how cells regulate protein levels and respond to environments. Technologies used to predict or directly quantify protein synthesis include ribosome profiling, radioactive and stable isotope labelling, and bioorthogonal noncanonical amino acid tagging (BONCAT). Here, we emphasise BONCAT's potential in plants, which, when combined with click-chemistry, enables the detection, enrichment, and characterisation of newly synthesised proteins themselves. We summarise lessons from BON

INTRODUCTION: The liver is essential for both the body's removal of waste materials and the metabolism of nutrients, it is critical for sustaining general health. However, a number of factors, including viral infections, immune system malfunctions, cancer, alcohol intake, and drug toxicity, are contributing to the rising prevalence of liver problems. Alternative approaches to liver disease treatment are being investigated due to the potential limitations of conventional medical treatments. In this regard, the possible hepatoprotective effects of medicinal plants containing bioactive chemicals

Excessive use of agrochemicals poses an ongoing threat to ecosystems. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Sun et al. recently revealed that selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) biosynthesized by selenobacteria recruit beneficial microbes via chemotaxis and biofilm formation, enriching rhizosphere diversity. This ability to manipulate plant-microbe interactions using SeNPs offers a novel approach for sustainable agriculture.

Plants need at least 13 different nutrients to maintain optimal growth. Nitrogen and phosphorus, from the Greek 'phôs' (meaning 'light') and 'phoros' (meaning 'bearer'), are the main nutrients limiting plant growth in both agricultural and natural ecosystems. Agriculture has relied heavily since the mid 1950s on the use of synthetic ammonium- and phosphorus-based fertilizers to increase crop productivity. While industrial synthesis of ammonium relies on the chemical conversion of atmospheric nitrogen, phosphorus is mined from finite reserves concentrated in a few countries. Considering our cur

Muconic acid (MA) is a dicarboxylic acid used for the production of industrially relevant chemicals such as adipic acid, terephthalic acid, and caprolactam. Because the synthesis of these polymer precursors generates toxic intermediates by utilizing petroleum-derived chemicals and corrosive catalysts, the development of alternative strategies for the bio-based production of MA has garnered significant interest. Plants produce organic carbon skeletons by harvesting carbon dioxide and energy from the sun, and therefore represent advantageous hosts for engineered metabolic pathways towards the ma

Leishmaniasis is a clinical manifestation caused by the parasites of the genus Leishmania. Plants are reservoirs of bioactive compounds, which are known to be chemically balanced, effective and least injurious as compared with synthetic medicines. The current resistance and the toxic effects of the available drugs have brought the trend to assess the antileishmanial effect of various plant extracts and their purified compound/s, which are summarized in this review. Moreover, it also highlights various traditional remedies used by local healers against leishmaniasis. A systematic cross-sectiona

Plants typically have photosynthetically competent green shoots. To complement resources derived from the atmospheric environment, plants also acquire essential elements from soil. Inorganic ions and molecules are generally considered to be the sources of soil-derived nutrients, and plants tested in this respect can grow with only inorganic nutrients and so can live as autotrophs. However, mycorrhizal symbionts are known to access nutrients from organic matter. Furthermore, specialist lineages of terrestrial photosynthetically competent plants are mixotrophic, including species that obtain org

The sickle cell disease is fatal in nature. Thousands of children are dying off due to this health problem throughout the globe. Due to the rapid development of diagnosis and clinical managements such patients are living up to a respectable age. But as there is no permanent cure the patients are suffering from bone and joint pain, jaundice, hepato-splenomegaly, chronic infections etc. The main physiological complicacy is due to the polymerization of sickle hemoglobin (HbS), (sickling process) inside the red blood cell (RBC) of these patients during deoxygenating state. The change of RBC from s

Screening of the antifungal activities of ten Guadeloupean plants was undertaken to find new extracts and formulations against superficial mycoses such as onychomycosis, athlete's foot, Pityriasis versicolor, as well as the deep fungal infection Pneumocystis pneumonia. For the first time, the CMI of these plant extracts [cyclohexane, ethanol and ethanol/water (1:1, v/v)] was determined against five dermatophytes, five Candida species, Scytalidium dimidiatum, a Malassezia sp. strain and Pneumocystis carinii. Cytotoxicity tests of the most active extracts were also performed on an HaCat keratino

Plants and plant products cause various contact reactions to the skin and mucosae. The skin reaction is usually dermatitis, such as irritant contact dermatitis, allergic dermatitis and a dermatitis caused by an airborne allergen. Other symptom pictures include allergic and non-allergic contact urticaria, protein contact dermatitis and phytophotodermatitis. Actinic reticuloid, usually induced by contact allergy, can also be considered a contact reaction.

Meiosis includes two successive divisions of the nucleus with one round of DNA replication and leads to the formation of gametes with half of the chromosomes of the mother cell during sexual reproduction. It provides a cytological basis for gametogenesis and nheritance in eukaryotes. Meiotic cell division is a complex and dynamic process that involves a number of molecular and cellular events, such as DNA and chromosome replication, chromosome pairing, synapsis and recombination, chromosome segregation, and cytokinesis. Meiosis maintains genome stability and integrity over sexual life cycles.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the world's population uses medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases and, in African countries, this rate is much higher. In recent years, however, medicinal plants have represented a primary health source for the pharmaceutical industry. No less than 400 compounds derived from plants are currently used in the preparation of drugs, such as vincristine and vinblastine used in the treatment of cancer. Nigerians still depend largely on crude herbal remedies or traditional medicine. They also use wild plants for cosmetics an

Galanthamine is an Amaryllidaceae-type alkaloid with acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity which is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The distribution of galanthamine and four other alkaloids in different organs of Narcissus confusus plants, as well as the variations occurring during the ontogenic cycle of this plant species, was studied. The five alkaloids were found to be present in all the organs at every stage, with the exception of haemanthamine in senescent flowers. The highest amount of alkaloids occurred in the bulb at the emerging stage, galanthamine being the most abun
