Chromium(VI) Toxicity in Legume Plants: Modulation Effects of Rhizobial Symbiosis.

Most legume species have the ability to establish a symbiotic relationship with soil nitrogen-fixing rhizobacteria that promote plant growth and productivity. There is an increasing evidence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) important role in formation of legume-rhizobium symbiosis and nodule functioning. Environmental pollutants such as chromium compounds can cause damage to rhizobia, legumes, and their symbiosis. In plants, toxic effects of chromium(VI) compounds are associated with the increased production of ROS and oxidative stress development as well as with inhibition of pigment synthesi

Maternal and developmental toxicity of the hallucinogenic plant-based beverage ayahuasca in rats.

Rats were treated orally with ayahuasca (AYA) on gestation days (GD) 6-20 at doses corresponding to one-(1X) to eight-fold (8X) the average dose taken by a human adult in a religious ritual, and the pregnancy outcome evaluated on GD21. Rats treated with 4X and 8X doses died during the treatment period (44 and 52%), and those that survived showed kidney injury. Rats surviving the 8X dose showed neuronal loss in hippocampal regions and in the raphe nuclei, and those from the 2X dose neuronal loss in CA1. Delayed intrauterine growth, induced embryo deaths and increased occurrence of foetal anomal

Comparison of vascular and non-vascular aquatic plant as indicators of cadmium toxicity.

Antioxidative and microscopic responses in non-vascular (moss Taxiphyllum barbieri) and vascular (Ceratophyllum demersum) aquatic plants exposed to short-term (24 h) cadmium (Cd) excess (10 and 100 μM) were compared. Ceratophyllum considerably accumulated Cd but less pronounced symptoms of oxidative stress were detected by confocal microscopy (at the level of general ROS, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical/peroxynitrite and superoxide) that could be related to enhanced activities of antioxidative enzymes (SOD, CAT, APX). Amounts of ascorbic acid and non-protein thiols were higher in Ceratophy

Anti-leishmanial and toxicity activities of some selected Iranian medicinal plants.

Leishmaniasis is caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Leishmania. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most common form of leishmaniasis in Iran. As there is not any vaccine for leishmaniasis, treatment is important to prevent the spreading of parasites. There is, therefore, a need to develop newer drugs from different sources. The aim of this study was to assess anti-leishmanial activity of the ethanolic extracts of 17 different medicinal plants against Leishmania major promastigotes and macrophage cell line J774. The selection of the hereby studied 17 plants was based on the existi

Modeling the dynamics of woody plant-herbivore interactions with age-dependent toxicity.

In this paper we study the effects that woody plant chemical defenses may have on interactions between boreal hares that in winter feed almost entirely on twigs. We focus particularly on the fact that toxin concentration often varies with the age of twig segments. The model incorporates the fact that the woody internodes of the youngest segments of the twigs of the deciduous angiosperm species that these hares prefer to eat are more defended by toxins than the woody internodes of the older segments that subtend and support the younger segments. Thus, the per capita daily intake of the biomass

[A review on the environmental behaviors and toxicity assessment of chromium in soil-plant systems].

As a result of the wide use of chromium (Cr) and its compounds as well as the exposure of the Cr-containing wastes, air, soil, water and food could be polluted by Cr in varying degrees. Cr is a toxic element that occurs in highly variable oxidation states. Accordingly, environmental chromium pollution, especially the soil contamination with Cr, has become one of the focuses of environmental science. In this review, the factors influencing the transport, transformation and the ecotoxicity of chromium were summarized, for example, soil properties (pH, Eh, organic matter, clay minerals), species

Spectrum of cyanide toxicity and allocation in Heliconius erato and Passiflora host plants.

The larvae of three races of Heliconius erato were fed various species of Passiflora containing varying levels of cyanoglucosides. The mortality rate of larvae and pupae rose when larvae were fed species of Passiflora capable of releasing larger quantities of cyanide. When larvae were fed species of Passiflora with these properties, the resulting adult butterflies also released higher levels of cyanide. This may serve as a defense mechanism. The compounds responsible for the release of cyanide were not evenly distributed throughout the adult butterfly's body. The thorax contained the highest c

Sunlight and the plant: a toxic combination: severe phytophotodermatitis from Cneoridium dumosum.

A severe case of phytophotodermatitis occurred in a patient who had spent several hours walking through an area densely populated with Cneoridium dumosum. This patient's co-worker experienced a similar reaction after undergoing patch testing of an area of skin and exposing it to sunlight. Voluntary patch testing by one of the authors produced a reaction consistent with the other two cases. Approximately twenty other cases were described by a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ranger in students who came into contact with the plant during a field trip with him to Baja California, Mexico. Cneoridium

Deglycosylation Enhances the Toxicity of Plant-Derived Glycosyl Bisphenol A during Gastrointestinal Digestion.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most used plasticizers and a known endocrine disrupting chemical. In plants, BPA is easily conjugated to form conjugates such as glycosyl BPA, and humans can be exposed to such conjugates when ingesting BPA-contaminated plant foods. This study considered the potential of deconjugation of glycosyl BPA in a simulated human gastrointestinal tract system and evaluated the subsequent changes in biological activity using the Caco-2 colon cell model. Glycosyl BPA was found in both soil and lettuce with concentrations ranging from not detected (ND) to 82.51 ng/g dry wei

Aging alters nanoplastics-propranolol interactions in lettuce: implications for plant toxicity and microbiomes.

This study investigated whether UV aging and surface functionalization of polystyrene nanoplastics (NPs) modify their interactions with propranolol (PRO) and affect lettuce physiology and endophytic bacterial communities. Lettuce was exposed for 30 days to pristine or aged NPs (5 or 50 mg L-1), PRO (100 μg L-1), or their combinations. The results showed that UV aging enhanced PRO adsorption, potentially owing to increased surface oxidation and specific surface area. Moreover, aged NPs produced numerically higher PRO contents in both roots and leaves than their pristine counterparts, with a max

Oat Leaf Diseases: Secondary Metabolites of Pathogenic Fungi and Infected Plants and Their Toxicity.

Oats (Avena sativa), a globally vital cereal and forage crop, incur heavy losses from foliar fungal pathogens, whose virulence is largely mediated by secondary metabolites. These compounds are toxic to the host plant, normal cells, and livestock. This review summarizes the current knowledge on 31 pathogenic fungi and their 310 secondary metabolites, which are classified into 9 chemical classes: lactones, benzene derivatives, terpenoids, nitrogen-containing compounds, peptides, flavonoids, pyranones, steroids, and organic acids. Of these 310 secondary metabolites, 68 compounds display phytotoxi

Amygdalin: Toxicity, Anticancer Activity and Analytical Procedures for Its Determination in Plant Seeds.

Amygdalin (d-Mandelonitrile 6-O-β-d-glucosido-β-d-glucoside) is a natural cyanogenic glycoside occurring in the seeds of some edible plants, such as bitter almonds and peaches. It is a medically interesting but controversial compound as it has anticancer activity on one hand and can be toxic via enzymatic degradation and production of hydrogen cyanide on the other hand. Despite numerous contributions on cancer cell lines, the clinical evidence for the anticancer activity of amygdalin is not fully confirmed. Moreover, high dose exposures to amygdalin can produce cyanide toxicity. The aim of thi

Organic nitrogen modulates not only cadmium toxicity but also microbial activity in plants.

It is known that organic nitrogen may modify uptake and toxicity of metals but direct metabolic and microbial comparison of various organic N sources is not available. We therefore studied comparative impact of additional N sources (nitrate, urea or allantoin as 1 mM of N for each compound in addition to 15 mM of inorganic N in the Hoagland solution) on Cd toxicity and microbial activity in common crop cucumber. Organic N significantly elevated the growth, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity under Cd excess in comparison with inorganic N though the impact on Cd uptake was negligibl

Evaluating the Toxic Impacts of Cadmium Selenide Nanoparticles on the Aquatic Plant Lemna minor.

Cadmium selenide nanoparticles (CdSe NPs) were synthesized by an easy and simple method and their properties were assessed by XRD, TEM and SEM techniques. The effects of CdSe NPs as well as Cd2+ ions on Lemna minor plants were investigated. The absorption of CdSe NPs by the plants had some adverse consequences that were assessed by a range of biological analyses. The results revealed that both CdSe NPs and the ionic form of cadmium noticeably caused toxicity in L. minor. Morphological parameters as well as peroxidase (POD) activity were deteriorated. In contrast, the activities of some other a

Influence of polystyrene nanoplastics on the uptake and distribution of potentially toxic elements in tomato plants investigated using isotopic tracers.

This study evaluated the impact of 200 nm polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics (NPs) on the uptake and distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), in hydroponically grown tomato plants. To distinguish naturally occurring PTEs from those taken up by the plants from nutrient solutions, enriched isotopic tracers were used, while europium (Eu)-labelled PS NPs enabled following the presence of NPs in plant tissues via ICP-MS analysis. After accounting for Eu leaching, intact PS-Eu NP concentrations were highest in roots and decreased
