Necrotizing fasciitis of the extremity caused by Haemophilus influenzae serotype b in a healthy adult.

Haemophilus influenzae is a rare cause of necrotizing fasciitis with only a few previously reported cases. We describe the case of a 44-year-old man who had necrotizing fasciitis of the right lower extremity develop after intramuscular injections of paracetamol on his right buttock. The causative organism isolated was Haemophilus influenzae serotype b. This unusual infection was treated with repeated débridement and culture-guided antibiotics. There was no recurrence of infection at last followup 1 year after the initial surgery. Wound coverage was achieved with the use of a full-thickness ski

Innovative Cell and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapies for Diabetic Foot Ulcer Treatment: The Allogeneic Approach.

Cutaneous chronic wounds are a major global health burden in continuous growth, because of population aging and the higher incidence of chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Different treatments have been proposed: biological, surgical, and physical. However, most of these treatments are palliative and none of them can be considered fully satisfactory. During a spontaneous wound healing, endogenous regeneration mechanisms and resident cell activity are triggered by the released platelet content. Activated stem and progenitor cells are key factors for ulcer healing, and they can be either recruit

Platelet-rich plasma, the ultimate secret for youthful skin elixir and hair growth triggering.

The clinical application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is based on the increase in the concentration of growth factors that are released from alpha-granule of the concentrated platelets and in the secretion of proteins which are able to capitalize on the healing process at the cellular level. It has been invented to restore the natural beauty by starting the natural rejuvenation process of the skin and aiming to make it function as a younger one and to keep the skin youthful and maintain it. Besides that, it is also emerged to include hairs as a new injectable procedure to enable stimulating h

Advanced methodological framework for speciation analysis of gadolinium in skin tissue following MRI contrast agent exposure.

A method for quantitative speciation analysis of residual gadolinium in skin following gadolinium-based contrast agent exposure was developed for the first time. Polyethersulfone was identified as a suitable filter material for these compounds, allowing complete recovery of spiked contrast agents. In contrast, decreasing recoveries with increasing charge of the compound were observed for regenerated cellulose and cellulose triacetate as filter materials. The developed method entailed the utilization of bead beating for tissue homogenization, and the release of yttrium from ceramic beads was sh

Application of Platelet-Rich Plasma-Based Scaffolds in Soft and Hard Tissue Regeneration.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a blood product with higher platelet concentrations than whole blood, offering controlled delivery of growth factors (GFs) for regenerative medicine. PRP plays pivotal roles in tissue restoration mechanisms, including angiogenesis, fibroblast proliferation, and extracellular matrix development, making it applicable across various regenerative medicine treatments. Despite promising results in different tissue injuries, challenges such as short half-life and rapid deactivation by proteases persist. To address these challenges, biomaterial-based delivery scaffolds, s

Clinical and biochemical characterization of a patient with prolidase deficiency, a rare disorder of collagen metabolism.

Prolidase deficiency (PD) is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism, with an estimated incidence of 1 per 1.25 million births. Prolidase is critical for the turnover of proline and hydroxyproline-rich proteins, such as collagen. Collagen metabolism is essential for matrix regeneration during cellular proliferation and complex bodily functions such as wound healing and immunological cell differentiation. PD clinical manifestations include persistent skin ulcerations and poor wound healing, hypertelorism, high arched palate, depressed nasal bridge, micrognathia, splenomegaly, intellec

Subcutaneous platelet-rich plasma and topical graphitic carbon nitride in a lanolin carrier enhance healing of surgically induced cutaneous wounds in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Graphitic carbon nitride nanoparticles (g-C3N4) are a promising material in wound healing; however, their effects and potential synergy with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) remain unexplored. This study evaluates the single and synergistic effects of PRP injection and g-C3N4 nanoparticle ointment on wound healing in dogs. Six full-thick skin wounds per group (a total of 6 groups) were surgically created on the chest region of six adult mongrel dogs, with each dog having three bilateral chest wounds. Wounds were treated with either normal saline, lanolin dressings, PRP infiltration, PRP

Platelet-Derived Components for Skin and Bone Aging and Age-Associated Pathologies: Mechanisms, Bioengineering Strategies, and Clinical Translation.

Advances in regenerative medicine have positioned platelets and their derivatives-including platelet-rich plasma, platelet-rich fibrin, platelet lysate, extracellular vesicles, and purified growth factors-as promising interventions specifically for skin and bone aging, two clinically accessible tissues with robust preclinical and clinical evidence for platelet-derived component-based rejuvenation and regeneration. Because much of the available evidence comes from injury models or age-associated inflammatory/degenerative diseases, we explicitly distinguish pathology-targeted inflammation resolu

Synergistic effect of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and platelet-rich plasma in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic wounds are a major clinical challenge, because minor skin wounds can lead to chronic, unhealed ulcers and ultimately result in infection, gangrene, or even amputation. Studies on bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and a series of growth factors have revealed their many benefits for wound healing and regeneration. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may improve the environment for BMSC development and differentiation. However, whether combined use of BMSCs and PRP may be more effective for accelerating diabetic ulcer healing remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We investigat

Dual effects of atmospheric pressure plasma jet on skin wound healing of mice.

Cold plasma has become an attractive tool for promoting wound healing and treating skin diseases. This article presents an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) generated in argon gas through dielectric barrier discharge, which was applied to superficial skin wounds in BALB/c mice. The mice (n = 50) were assigned randomly into five groups (named A, B, C, D, E) with 10 animals in each group. Natural wound healing was compared with stimulated wound healing treated daily with APPJ for different time spans (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 seconds) on 14 consecutive days. APPJ emission spectra, morphologic

What Kind of Dressing Is Important to Ensure Wound Healing With the Application of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Chronic Ulcers?

Wound healing is an intricate process of tissue regeneration that depends on the simultaneous presence of immunological and microenvironmental factors. The significant role of platelets and their granules in the wound-healing process has led to extensive research on their potential as a therapeutic intervention in different areas, including chronic wounds and aesthetic therapies. Saltwater aids in purification and promotes healing by utilizing osmosis. Sodium chloride, the chemical component present in salt, induces the extrusion of fluids from cells upon contact. If the liquids in issue are b

Transplantation of autologous fat, stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cell, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for cell therapy of atrophic acne scars: Clinical evaluation and biometric assessment.

BACKGROUND: Scarring is an unfortunate result of acne because it causes the psychological and cosmetic problems for the patients. Unfortunately, no single treatment is suitable, and using multiple methods may have a better result. The autologous fat and stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells and their secretory factors can enhance the angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, and migration of fibroblasts, therefore regenerate hurt tissues. Moreover, other treatments for acne scarring, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), induce the increase in scare. AIMS: This study aimed to verify the effectiveness o

Caloric Restriction Attenuated Nerve Damages Mediated Through SIRT-1-a Study Using Nerve Crush Injury Model in Rats.

Activation of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT-1) is vital for axonogenesis and nerve regeneration. Caloric restriction (CR) has health benefits and protects against neurodegenerative disorders, largely through SIRT-1 regulation. This study investigates how diet control impacts peripheral nerve injury, focusing on SIRT-1 expression. We prepared nerve tissue cultures for a pharmacological analysis of SIRT-1's effects on nerve degeneration. After two weeks of 70% caloric restriction, we crushed the left sciatic nerve of Sprague-Dawley rats with a vessel clamp. We then administered SIRT-1 agonists or antagonists

The History and Current Status of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy in Dermatology.

Since the 1800s, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used as a treatment for a wide range of medical conditions with a concomitant effect of tending to reduce the need for some invasive procedures. The aim of this narrative review was to concisely document the history and current usage of PRP specifically in the field of dermatology. Four databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and Web of Science) were searched for primary articles written in English that evaluated human subjects and focused on PRP use in dermatology. Initial search terms included "platelet rich plasma," "alopecia," "androg

Platelets in Wound Healing: What Happens in Space?

Beyond their fundamental role in hemostasis, platelets importantly contribute to other processes aimed at maintaining homeostasis. Indeed, platelets are a natural source of growth factors and also release many other substances-such as fibronectin, vitronectin, sphingosine 1-phosphate-that are important in maintaining healthy tissues, and ensuring regeneration and repair. Despite rare thrombotic events have been documented in astronauts, some in vivo and in vitro studies demonstrate that microgravity affects platelet's number and function, thus increasing the risk of hemorrhages and contributin
