Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a well-known complication in Plasmodium falciparum infection. It is less frequently described in Plasmodium vivax, and only one case is reported in Plasmodium ovale. Here we present the second description of this pulmonary complication in a P. ovale acute infection.

A 27 week pregnant woman who had lived in Bangkok, Thailand, for 18 months presented to her obstetrician with a 1-week history of intermittent fever and malaise. Medical history was significant for multiple episodes of malaria during her 10 years of employment in sub-Saharan Africa before her relocation to Thailand. The initial malaria smear was negative. She returned a week later with no resolution of her symptoms, at which time she was found to have Plasmodium ovale by microscopy and polymerase chain reaction. She had an excellent response to chloroquine, which she continued weekly until 36

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale is an understudied malaria species prevalent throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. Little is known about the distribution of ovale malaria and risk factors for infection in areas of high malaria endemicity.
METHODS: Using the 2013 Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Demographic and Health Survey, we conducted a risk factor analysis for P. ovale infections. We evaluated geographic clustering of infections and speciated to P. ovale curtisi and P. ovale wallikeri through deep sequencing.
RESULTS: Of 18 149 adults tested, we detected 143 prevalent P. ovale infect

Seven splenectomized chimpanzees were infected with the Nigerian I/CDC strain of Plasmodium ovale. Two of the animals had no history of previous malarial infection whereas three had been infected with P. vivax, one with P. malariae, and one with P. vivax and P. malariae. The two animals with no previous malarial experience had maximum parasitemias of 88,700 and 127,000 per mm3 while the other animals had maximum parasitemias ranging from 10,100 to 60,600 per mm3. Anopheles freeborni, An. dirus, An. stephensi, and An. gambiae were readily infected via membrane feeding on heparinized blood obtai

Microsatellites can be utilized to explore genotypes, population structure, and other genomic features of eukaryotes. Systematic characterization of microsatellites has not been a focus for several species of Plasmodium, including P. malariae and P. ovale, as the majority of malaria elimination programs are focused on P. falciparum and to a lesser extent P. vivax. Here, five human malaria species (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale curtisi, and P. knowlesi) were investigated with the aim of conducting in-depth categorization of microsatellites for P. malariae and P. ovale curtisi.

This study reports a challenging diagnosis of Plasmodium ovale malaria in a Colombian citizen returning from Cameroon. Initial microscopy screenings conducted at two private hospitals yielded conflicting results, with the first showing negative smears and the second diagnosing P. vivax. Subsequent microscopy examinations at two government laboratories identified P. ovale, although the routine species-specific PCR strategy was negative. PCR confirmation was finally obtained when P. ovale wallikeri primers were used. Although P. ovale is not frequently found in Colombia, there is a clear need to

Asymptomatic malaria parasite carriers do not seek anti-malarial treatment and may constitute a silent infectious reservoir. In order to assess the level of asymptomatic and symptomatic carriage amongst adolescents in a highly endemic area, and to identify the risk factors associated with such carriage, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 1032 adolescents (ages 10-19 years) from eight schools located in Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria in 2016. Blood films and blood spot filter paper samples were prepared for microscopy and DNA analysis. The prevalence of asymptomatic malaria was determined u

BACKGROUND: Despite the increased use and worldwide distribution of malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) that distinguish between Plasmodium falciparum and non-falciparum species, little is known about their performance detecting Plasmodium knowlesi (Pk), Plasmodium malariae (Pm), and Plasmodium ovale (Po). This review seeks to analyze the results of published studies evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of malaria RDTs in detecting Pk, Pm, and Po monoinfections.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CENTRAL databases were systematically searched to identify studies that reported the p

The prevalence and clinical significance of mixed Plasmodium infections in children with severe Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria are not well characterized. In a cohort of 440 Ugandan children hospitalized with severe malaria who were diagnosed with Plasmodium species via microscopy, nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) testing was used to detect P. falciparum, Plasmodium ovale (P. ovale), Plasmodium malariae (P. malariae), and Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) infections and assess their association with adverse clinical outcomes during hospitalization. Using nPCR testing, the Plasm

Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale are increasingly gaining public health attention as the global transmission of falciparum malaria is decreasing. However, the absence of reliable Plasmodium species-specific detection tools has hampered accurate diagnosis of these minor Plasmodium species. In this study, SYBR Green-based real-time PCR assays were developed for the detection of P. malariae and P. ovale using cooperative primers that significantly limit the formation and propagation of primers-dimers. Both the P. malariae and P. ovale cooperative primer-based assays had at least 10-fold l

BACKGROUND: A quartan malaria caused by Plasmodium malariae (Pm) and a tertian Plasmodium ovale (Po) malaria has been largely overlooked in Ethiopia due to milder clinical symptoms, lower prevalence, and the frequent misdiagnosis of these species during routine microscopic. This study estimated the prevalence of Pm and Po infections misdiagnosed as P. vivax (Pv) in selected health facilities in southwestern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among study participants who were positive for Pv by microscopy or rapid diagnostic test (RDTs) and who were attending health facil

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae have long been reported to be widely distributed in tropical Africa and in other major malaria-endemic areas of the world. However, little is known about the burden caused by these two malaria species.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We did a longitudinal study of the inhabitants of Dielmo village, Senegal, between June, 1990, and December, 2010. We monitored the inhabitants for fever during this period and performed quarterly measurements of parasitemia. We analyzed parasitological and clinical data in a random-effect logistic regression model to in

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a major health problem worldwide. Timely diagnosis of co-infections mimicking COVID-19, such as malaria, might be challenging particularly in non-endemic areas. We report the first case of COVID-19 and Plasmodium ovale malaria co-infection from our region aiming to highligt the importance of travel history and prophylaxis in malaria management in the context of pandemic. The galloping sound can sometimes be a harbinger of zebra besides the horse.

Malaria may lead to spontaneous splenic rupture as a rare but potentially lethal complication. Most frequently, this has been reported in patients infected with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, while other parasitic agents are less likely to be the cause. We report a 29-year-old British Caucasian, who after returning from a business trip in Democratic Republic Congo was diagnosed with tertian malaria caused by Plasmodium ovale.During his in-patient stay, the patient suffered a splenic rupture requiring immediate surgical intervention and splenectomy. Following this surgical intervent

BACKGROUND: Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are used widely in the diagnosis of malaria. Although the effectiveness of RDTs for malaria has been described in many previous studies, the low performance of RDT particularly for Plasmodium ovale malaria in traveller has rarely been reported.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted on Japanese travellers diagnosed with malaria at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine between January 2004 and June 2013. The diagnosis of malaria was confirmed by microscopic examination, RDT, and polymerase chain reaction in all patients.

Malaria in child travelers caused by Plasmodium ovale spp. is less well characterized than malaria due to other Plasmodium species. Commonly used diagnostic tests often lack adequate sensitivity to identify P. ovale spp., and a missed diagnosis may have serious consequences. We present a case series of eight children in the United States with P. ovale malaria, all of whom had traveled to or immigrated from malaria-endemic areas. Two children developed clinical malaria, including one with severe malaria; two had isolated splenomegaly; and four were asymptomatic siblings of the children with spl

Malaria remains a major global health concern. The development of point-of-care diagnostic aptasensors could improve malaria detection, patient management, and eradication efforts. We selected and validated single-stranded DNA aptamers against Plasmodium falciparum lactate dehydrogenase (Pf-LDH), using systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX). The five most abundant aptamers were validated with an enzyme-linked oligonucleotide assay (ELONA). The aptamer binding affinities to Pf-LDH varied between 0.35 and 3.08 nM. Truncation of aptamers enhanced binding affinities in m

BACKGROUND: High-quality evidence for the therapeutic efficacy and effectiveness of antimalarials for infections caused by Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale spp, and mixed-Plasmodium infections is scarce. In this study, we aimed to analyse the efficacy of pyronaridine-artesunate for the treatment of non-falciparum and mixed-species Plasmodium infections from a large phase 3b/4 clinical trial in central Africa.
METHODS: This post-hoc analysis was done in a random subset of samples from two sites (in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Gabon) of the CANTAM-Pyramax trial assessing py

Circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is the primary component of two malaria vaccines that have been validated by World Health Organisation. However, these vaccines do not include antigens from non-falciparum species, which should also be considered. The csp gene was amplified and sequenced in 14 Plasmodium ovale cuitisi (Poc) isolates from Cameroon. The C and N-terminal regions showed perfect conservation, while the central region showed repeated motifs of nine amino acids. Interestingly, in addition to nano-repeat motifs reported in the literature, a new motif (QSEGNPPAP) was observed in four samp
