Infectious causes of chronic diarrhoea.

Infections are an uncommon cause of chronic diarrhoea. Parasites are most likely, including protozoa like giardia, cryptosporidia and cyclospora. Bacteria are unlikely to cause chronic diarrhoea in immunocompetent individuals with the possible exception of Yersinia, Plesiomonas and Aeromonas. Infectious diarrhoea can trigger other causes of chronic diarrhoea, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome and "Brainerd-type" diarrhoea. A thorough evaluation should detect most infections causing chronic diarrhoea.

Oral cholera vaccines containing B-subunit-killed whole cells and killed whole cells only. I. Cross-reacting antigens of members of family Vibrionaceae and the vaccines.

Antigenic similarity between the oral cholera B subunit-whole cell (BS-WC) and whole-cell only (WC) vaccines and strains of the family Vibrionaceae was studied by crossed immunoelectrophoresis. A reference system consisting of Vibrio cholerae Inaba E1 Tor antigenic extract and homologous rabbit antiserum was applied in the study. The system was represented by 30 anodically migrating antigens forming distinct precipitation bands. Antigenic extracts of other members of the family Vibrionaceae showed the following numbers of cellular antigens shared in common with the reference system: Vibrio cho

Gut microbiota perturbation and subsequent oxidative stress in gut and kidney tissues of zebrafish after individual and combined exposure to inorganic arsenic and fluoride.

Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) and fluoride (F) affect gut health and potentially damage organs. The present study investigates the interplay between gut bacteria and oxidative stress (measured by MDA level, GSH level, catalase activity, Nrf2 translocation and expression) in zebrafish exposed to F (NaF 15 ppm) and As (As2O3 50 ppb) alone or in combination. Combined exposure to As and F reduced gut bacterial alteration and imposed less oxidative stress compared to F- exposure alone. V3-V4 metagenomic sequencing revealed Pseudomonas, Aeromonas and Plesiomonas genera dominated in As

Seasonal distribution of human-to-human pathogens in airborne PM2.5 and their potential high-risk ARGs.

Airborne microorganisms, an emerging global health threat, have attracted extensive studies. However, few attentions have been paid to the seasonal distribution of airborne pathogens, in particular their associations with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). To this end, two-week daily PM2.5 samples were consecutively collected from Nanchang in four seasons, and the human-to-human pathogens were screened based on high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that there were 20 pathogenic taxa in PM2.5 in Nanchang, and the highest relative abundance of pathogens was observed in winter (5.84%),

Immunity of the guinea pig's eye after vaccination with Shigella sonnei phase I antigen.

A total of 8 doses, each containing 10(9) live or heated cells of pure phase I antigen of Shigella sonnei and Plesiomonas shigelloides, was administered into the conjunctival sac of guinea pigs during a 3-week period. The eyes were challenged with virulent S. sonnei. The vaccines protected the eyes in 50-80% to the minimum infecting dose andin 20-50% to 3 MID. The peak of immunity began to decrease after the 26th day and on the 56th day it was practically nil. Vaccination caused histological changes in the conjunctiva but not in the cornea.

Starvation Exacerbates Cold-Induced Synergistic Hepatic Injury in Pelteobagrus vachelli via Gut-Liver Axis Disruption and Ferroptosis-Related Metabolic Reprogramming.

Overwintering represents a critical bottleneck for farmed fish, during which low temperature and starvation stress frequently co-occur, yet their synergistic effects on fish health remain poorly understood. Here, we exposed Pelteobagrus vachelli, a cold-sensitive freshwater species, to four conditions for 10 days: control (25 °C, feeding), starvation alone (25 °C, starvation), cold alone (11 °C, feeding), and combined cold-starvation (11 °C, starvation). Hepatic histopathology, antioxidant and liver function indices, gut microbiota (16S rRNA sequencing), and untargeted metabolomics (LC-MS) wer

[Travelers' diarrhea].

Travelers diarrhea affects millions of tourists each year. Most cases are caused by a variety of bacterial enteropathogens: toxigenic Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, Shigella, Salmonella, Aeromonas, Plesiomonas and non-cholera vibrios. Treatment may include antibacterial therapy with either ciprofloxacin, or azitrhomycin, or rifaximin. Viral pathogens such as norovirus usually cause short-term illness that typically resolves before travelers seek medical attention. Chronic gastrointestinal disease in returning travelers often is caused by parasitic pathogens like Giardia lamblia. The impact o

Pleisiomonas shigelloides bacteremia after catfish injury.

This case of Pleisimonas shigelloides bacteremia resulting after a catfish barb injury highlights an unusual presentation of a common condition that requires alternative therapy for successful treatment. An otherwise healthy male in his early 40s presented to the emergency department with sepsis and rapidly spreading cellulitis shortly after a catfish injury at a freshwater lake. His broad-spectrum antibiotics were narrowed to ciprofloxacin when P. shigelloides grew from his blood culture. The case presents a unique mode of bacteremia, as usually P. shigelloides bacteremia develops in immunoco

Snake-to-human transmission of Aeromonas (Pl) shigelloides resulting in gastroenteritis.

A healthy young man developed acute gastroenteritis after handling an infected bao constrictor. The animal died after contracting "mouth-rot disease", a progressive ulcerative stomatitis of snakes charactistically caused a Aeromonas species. Stool cultures from the patient yielded a heavy growth of Aeromonas (Plesiomonas) shigelloides but no other enteric pathogens. Treatment wit sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim resulted in rapid relief of clinical symptoms. Aeromonas species are not considered part of the normal human fecal flora and gastroenteritis due to this organism is rare. Furthermore, thi

Diversity of organophosphorus pesticide-degrading bacteria in a polluted soil and conservation of their organophosphorus hydrolase genes.

Seven methyl parathion-degrading bacteria were isolated from a long-term methyl parathion contaminated soil and were found to belong to the genera Pseudaminobacter, Achromobacter, Brucella, and Ochrobactrum. Southern blot analysis using an mpd gene probe revealed that their hydrolase genes were similar to the mpd gene from Plesiomonas sp. strain M6 and were all located on the chromosome. Gene libraries were constructed from genomic DNA of each of the 7 organophosphorus pesticide-degrading bacteria, and their mpd genes were cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis revealed that their hydrolase g

A monoclonal antibody reacts with maltose-binding protein of Escherichia coli and related enteric bacteria.

Maltose-binding protein (MBP) encoded by malE is essential for the energy-dependent translocation of maltose through the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria. Its property of specific binding to maltose has been used in constructing fusion proteins for easy affinity purification. A monoclonal antibody named MAb SC1D7 was produced against Escherichia coli MBP. This MAb also bound to MBP-containing recombinant proteins in both Western blotting and immunoprecipitation analysis. As a result, this MAb can be a useful probe for tracing MBP-fusion proteins in various applications. Furthermore, intrinsic
