The pleural space is a "potential" anatomical space which is formed of two layers: visceral and parietal. It normally contains a trace of fluid (∼10 mL in each hemithorax). Diseases of the pleura can manifest with thickening of the pleural membranes or by abnormal accumulation of air or liquid. Chest radiographs are often the first imaging tests to point to a pleural pathology. Pleural effusions, pneumomediastinum, and pneumothorax are known complications of pregnancy. Although reported in small series and anecdotal case reports, the serious nature of these complications and the potential for misdiagnosis during the events of labor and delivery warrant a careful review of the available literature. In this article the incidence, clinical manifestations, and, where appropriate, therapeutic options of these disorders are discussed.

Pleural brushing can be performed under thoracoscopic examination. The combined use of all three methods of diagnosis (macroscopy, biopsy, cytology) achieved optimal diagnostic results. Objective: To investigate the value of thoracoscopy in diagnosis and treatment of pleural diseases in children. Method: Clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes of 19 patients who had refractory pleural diseases treated with thoracosocy during May 2011 to August 2016 in Hunan Provincial People's Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. On the basis of 4 personal cases, the authors recall the principal features of pleural effusions caused by chronic pancreatitis. The pancreatic origin should be suggested in any case of recurrent exudative pleurisy. The assay of amylase in the pleural fluid is the key to the diagnosis. Investigation of pancreatitis benefits from modern methods of morphological investigations, essentially retrograde cholangiography and abdominal computed tomography. Treatment consists above all of that of the causal lesion : initially medical and sometimes requiring surgery.
