The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance rates and the trend in resistance of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae isolated from pigs in Italy from 1994 to 2009. We report on the re-examination of nine Australian isolates of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae that have been previously assigned to serovar 12. In the ring precipitation test, none of the nine isolates reacted with antisera to serovars 1-14 of A. pleuropneumoniae. Antiserum prepared against one of the Australian isolates gave no reaction with any of the 14 recognised serovar reference strains, except serovar 7. Comparisons were made in the mortality associated with an inhaled dose of viable Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae type 5, strain J45, between adult C3H/HeN and C3H/HeJ mice. Mice of both strains were also challenged with Escherichia coli strains O111:B4 and J5. The 50% lethal dose (LD50) of H. pleuropneumoniae in C3H/HeN mice was calculated to be 10(6.5) CFU. At a mean dose of 10(6.7) CFU a 46% mortality rate occurred in C3H/HeN mice, whereas only 10% of the C3H/HeJ mice died (P less than 0.01). Our study presents a case of pleuropneumonia caused by a leak of nutritional formula to pleural cavity, which was caused by perforation of the oesophagus. The child was born in 28 hbd with 1400 g birth weight and was fed with mother's milk by a nasogastric tube. A case of an 11-month-old infant with a delayed presentation of congenital diaphragmatic hernia is reported. Incarceration of the herniated colon caused a misleading appearance on the chest X-ray which was interpreted as massive pleuropneumonia. Computed tomography, performed because of continuing deterioration in the clinical condition, showed fluid-filled bowel loops in the chest and dilated bowel loops with air-fluid levels in the abdomen, suggesting the correct diagnosis.

Twenty gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated with 5 x 10(8) colony forming units of an Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae biotype 1-serotype 9 strain onto their tonsils. Five other piglets (controls) were inoculated with phosphate-buffered saline solution. Pigs were euthanized at 30 min, 90 min, 180 min, 6 h, 9 h, 12 h or 24 h after inoculation.
