[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: a case report and literature review].

Pneumatosis cystoides was first described by Du Vernay in 1783. This is a fairly rare disease with nonspecific symptoms and CT data on pneumoperitoneum. The authors present pneumatosis intestinalis in a patient with systemic connective tissue disorder. Free gas in abdominal cavity and dilated intestinal loops were an indication for emergency surgery with subsequent resection of intestine due to signs of ischemic damage. A review of clinical cases allows us to conclude that pneumoperitoneum requires careful differential diagnosis. Free gas in abdominal cavity in patients with cystic pneumatosis

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis accompanied by schistosomiasis: a case report.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disease that most frequently occurs in the large and small intestine and has no obvious clinical symptoms. The main pathological feature is the presence of air-filled cysts in the intestinal submucosa, intermuscular wall, and subserous membrane. Conservative treatment is the first choice when no serious complications are present, whereas timely surgical treatment is needed for serious and life-threatening complications. This report presents the clinical and pathological analysis of PCI in a man in his early 90s. The patient was hospitalized be

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: a rare cause of acute abdomen.

We present the case of an 87-year-old male with Parkinson's disease, admitted to the Emergency Room due to acute abdomen, without leukocytosis or neutrophilia, with PCR of 0.74 and lactate of 2.5. The emergency abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a pneumoperitoneum and significant intestinal pneumatosis on the small bowel loops in the right abdomen. There was a 3.2 cm slight dilation, without portal venous gas and an adequate opacification of the superior mesenteric artery and its main branches. An emergency laparotomy was performed that showed subserosal cysts in the jejunum and il

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a low-incidence disease that confuses many doctors. A vast number of factors are suspected to contribute to its pathogenesis, such as Crohn's disease, intestinal stenosis, ulcerative colitis, drug use, extra-gastrointestinal diseases, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Most consider its pathogenesis interrelated to an increase in intra-intestinal pressure and the accumulation of gas produced by aerogenic bacteria, and patients with atypical symptoms and imaging manifestations tend to be misdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-

Pneumoperitoneum in a non-acute abdomen-pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.

AIM: The aim of this study is to increase the understanding of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) and its incidents. METHOD: We report here a case of PCI in an 88-year-old man with a provisional diagnosis of perforated viscus and possible ischaemic bowels based on CT findings of pneumoperitoneum. The patient was found to have extensive PCI on his small bowels. We then systematically search the PubMed database for case reports for articles containing 'pneumatosis intestinalis' in their titles or key words. RESULTS: The study group consisted of 52 cases on PCI from the period of 2010-201

[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in a patient with lung cancer].

We report a case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) in a patient with lung cancer. A 60-year-old woman was admitted with multiple lung tumors and multiple brain tumors. She was given steroid hormones to reduce her brain edema. Total resection of a brain tumor yielded a pathological diagnosis of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. During treatment, X-ray and CT images revealed intestinal pneumatosis and free air in the abdominal cavity, but a physical examination revealed no abnormal findings. She was given a diagnosis of PCI, and received conservative treatment. Her intestinal gas cys

The mucosal changes and pathogenesis of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.

The clinical and pathologic findings in 11 patients with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) are described. Symptoms were variable but localized to the gastrointestinal tract. Only one patient had obstructive airway disease. Although gas cysts of varying sizes were present in the colonic wall in all cases, distinctive changes were also observed in the mucosa. Architectural disturbances were seen in 11 of 13 specimens, and changes mimicking those of inflammatory bowel disease, including cryptitis, crypt abscesses, chronic inflammation, and granulomas, were present. In addition, crypt dilat

[A case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in a cirrhosis patient].

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a relatively rare condition in which gas is found as a linear or cystic form in the submucosa or subserosa of bowel wall. PCI is usually found incidentally on an imaging study. Treatment is usually conservative including oxygen and antibiotics therapy. So far, etiology and pathogenesis of PCI remain uncertain. PCI is associated with various medical conditions including various pulmonary diseases, connective tissue diseases, and endoscopic procedures. However, there are only few reports on lactulose causing PCI in patients with cirrhosis. Oral lactulo

Two Cases of Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis With Intraperitoneal Free Air.

Intraperitoneal free air (IFA) is sometimes accompanied by pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI); therefore, proper diagnosis is essential for PCI management. We report two cases of PCI with IFA. A 70-year-old female taking anti-psychotic medication for schizophrenia presented with repeated vomiting and high-grade fever. Computed tomography revealed small, linear gaseous cysts in the intestinal wall along with IFA. Although there was no sign of peritoneal irritation, intestinal perforation was not excluded. Thus, exploratory laparotomy was performed; it revealed no ascites or perforated sit

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: A rare cause of intraabdominal free air.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rarely seen disease characterized by cysts filled with multiple gases in the wall of the small or large intestine. Many factors have been suggested in the etiology and pathogenesis, including peptic ulcer, pyloric stenosis, and endoscopic trauma. Because various clinical characteristics and symptoms are observed together, diagnosis is generally difficult. It may be a cause of free air observed on direct radiographs. Treatment is directed at the cause and although there is generally a good course, it can sometimes lead to severe complications. In this pap

[Computed tomography colonography for 5 cases of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis].

Computed tomography colonography (CTC) was performed in 5 patients with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI). The virtual colonoscopy view of CTC as well as total colonoscopy (TCS) findings showed polypoid lesions in the colon, and multiplanar reconstruction images of the colon revealed in the polypoid lesions of the colon. We confirmed the diagnosis of PCI in all cases. CTC also detected the PCI lesions in the subserosa of the colonic wall which were not detected by TCS. Accurate evaluation of the extent of PCI involvement was obtained by CT air-contrast enema images. CTC is useful for de

[A case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis associated with ulcerative colitis].

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is associated with various diseases, but rarely with inflammatory bowel disease. We describe a rare case of PCI associated with ulcerative colitis. The patient was a 30-year-old man with ulcerative colitis (UC), which was in remission under immunomodulator therapy. Colonoscopic examination around 2 years after a diagnosis of UC revealed multiple hemispherical submucosal tumors (SMT) in the ascending colon and hepatic flexure, with erosion and disappearance of vascular network patterns in the rectum. PCI was diagnosed from the result of colonoscopic exam

[A case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: diagnosed by CT colonoscopy].

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by multiple gas filled cysts in the intestinal wall. The diagnosis of PCI is usually made by colonoscopy, histology, or radiologic findings. We report a case of PCI in a 35-year-old man. The patient initially complained of watery diarrhea and abdominal bloating for 2 weeks. Simple abdominal X-ray demonstrated numerous, small, round, air densities on the right upper abdomen along the ascending and proximal transverse colon. Colonoscopy revealed numerous, 5-20 mm sized, sessile polypoid, balloon-like distended, protruding
