Pneumonia in childhood bacterial meningitis-Experience from three continents.

INTRODUCTION: Although concomitant pneumonia is sometimes diagnosed in childhood bacterial meningitis, its role in the illness course and prognosis is not known. We examined these associations using prospectively collected data from Finland, Latin America and Angola. METHODS: This was a secondary descriptive analysis of prospectively collected data (clinical and laboratory findings at admission, during hospitalisation and outcome) from five clinical bacterial meningitis trials. We included children aged 2 months to 15 years from sites with confirmed bacterial meningitis and potential concomit

Biomarkers of viral and bacterial infection in rhinovirus pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Rhinovirus (RV) is often detected in children hospitalized with pneumonia, but the role of RV in causing pneumonia is still unclear. METHODS: White blood cell count, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, and myxovirus resistance protein A (MxA) levels were determined from blood samples in children (n = 24) hospitalized with radiologically verified pneumonia. Respiratory viruses were identified from nasal swabs by using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays. Among RV-positive children, the cycle threshold value, RV subtyping by sequence analysis, and the clearance of

Manganese-Based Nanoparticle Vaccine for Combating Fatal Bacterial Pneumonia.

Bacterial pneumonia is the leading cause of death worldwide among all infectious diseases. However, currently available vaccines against fatal bacterial lung infections, e.g., pneumonic plague, are accompanied by limitations, including insufficient antigen-adjuvant co-delivery and inadequate immune stimulation. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to develop next-generation vaccines to improve the interaction between antigen and adjuvant, as well as enhance the effects of immune stimulation. This study develops a novel amino-decorated mesoporous manganese silicate nanoparticle (AMMSN) loa

Parasitic Infection Misdiagnosed As Bacterial Pneumonia: A Case Report.

Bacterial pneumonia is a common lung disorder, and the pathogenesis remain elusive. Parasitic infections of the lung are able to affect the respiratory system, and the clinical features could mimic tuberculosis and malignancy. Therefore, it is essential to identify parasitic pneumonia at early stage, and most cases are curable with medical intervention. In this study, one case of parasitic pneumonia was misdiagnosed as bacterial infection, revealing the importance of pathological biopsy and MDT, especially when clinical features are not typical and routine tests are not specific. Therefore, mo

Bacterial pneumonia associated with corticosteroid therapy in three horses.

Three horses developed severe pulmonary infections while being treated with systemic corticosteroids for other diseases. Two of them had an immune-mediated skin disease, compatible with a diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceus, and one had severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Case 1 developed diffuse pneumonia from which Streptococcus zooepidemicus and Bacteroides melaninogenicus were isolated, and it responded to antibiotic therapy. Case 2 developed septicaemia, pulmonary thrombosis and pneumonia associated with Escherichia coli, and died during a peracute illness with signs of disseminate

[Clinical and experimental studies on vitronectin in bacterial pneumonia].

The pathophysiologic significance of vitronectin in bacterial pneumonia was studied. The following conclusions were obtained. 1) Plasma vitronectin in healthy persons was 252.3 +/- 65.2 micrograms/ml. The level was markedly decreased to 167.0 +/- 42.7 micrograms/ml in patients with bacterial pneumonia. However, it was gradually increased to the normal levels as recovering with pneumonic lesions. It was also found the negative correlation between plasma vitronectin and CRP (r = -0.7) and plasma fibrinogen (r = -0.6) in the course of pneumonia. 2) Vitronectin was localized on elastic fibers of t

[The pathologic anatomy of important forms of bacterial pneumonia].

Postmortem examinations were conducted on 7,952 cases with acute inflammatory processes of respiratory organs, among them 452 adults, between 1949 and 1988. Bacteria had been responsible for 87.5%, of these pneumonia cases, including Klebsiella for 15.3%, Pseudomonas for 13.5%, staphylococci for 9.9%, pneumococci for 4%, streptococci for 3.9% and Haemophilus for 0.7%. Other bacterial species of lower pathogenicity were recorded from 24.4% of all individuals who had died with pneumonia and mixed bacterial flora from another 29.3%. Pneumococcal and streptococcal forms of pneumonia were predomina

Bacterial pneumonia in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with abnormalities of humoral immunity that result in an increased incidence of bacterial pneumonia. From 2% to 10% of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated pneumonia is caused by encapsulated bacteria. Clinical features are usually typical of community-acquired pneumonia and include fever, productive cough, and chest pain. Focal radiographic infiltrates, an elevated WBC count, and mild hypoxemia are commonly observed. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilis influenzae, other Streptococcus species, and Branhamella catarrha

Primary Bacterial Peritonitis Caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Primary peritonitis is a rare infection in healthy children, mainly affecting patients with underlying medical disorders. We report a case of primary pneumococcal peritonitis in an immunocompetent 3-year-old boy. Diagnosis was made at laparotomy and cultures of the intra-abdominal pus yielded Streptococcus pneumoniae. Timely antibiotic treatment administered resulted in complete resolution of the infection.

Role of Autophagy and Apoptosis in the Postinfluenza Bacterial Pneumonia.

The risk of influenza A virus (IAV) is more likely caused by secondary bacterial infections. During the past decades, a great amount of studies have been conducted on increased morbidity from secondary bacterial infections following influenza and provide an increasing number of explanations for the mechanisms underlying the infections. In this paper, we first review the recent research progress that IAV infection increased susceptibility to bacterial infection. We then propose an assumption that autophagy and apoptosis manipulation are beneficial to antagonize post-IAV bacterial infection and

The rise and fall of bacterial clones: Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Globally spreading bacterial strains belong to clonal types that have the capacity to colonize, spread and cause disease in the community. Recent comparative genomic analyses of well-defined clinical isolates have led to the identification of bacterial properties that are required for the successful spread of bacterial clones. In this Review, we discuss the evolution of bacterial clones, the importance of recombination versus mutations for evolution of clones, common methods used to study clonal relationships among bacteria, factors that may contribute to the clonal spread of bacteria and the

Subacute bacterial endocarditis secondary to Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Pneumococcal endocarditis characteristically presents as an acute illness, often accompanied by purulent meningitis, rapid destruction of the heart valves, congestive heart failure, and high mortality. We describe two patients with subacute pneumococcal endocarditis without a known primary source of pneumococcal bacteremia, fever, meningitis, or congestive heart failure. Both patients were cured with medical therapy. Pneumococcal endocarditis can present as an indolent illness resembling viridans streptococcal endocarditis.

When Influenza, Bacterial Pneumonia, and COVID-19 Co-exist.

In the United States, influenza virus and bacterial pneumonia are known to be the leading causes of hospitalization in the winter season. Although healthcare workers are knowledgeable about the management of these co-infections, with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic that occurred in 2019, a significant change has occurred. The symptoms and clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are similar to that of influenza virus and bacterial pneumonia which can present a unique challenge for healthcare workers. Many reports are available for influenza virus and bacterial pneumonia but

Solithromycin for the treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia.

Community-acquired pneumonia is a major public health problem worldwide. In recent years, there has been an increase in the frequency of resistance to the antimicrobials such as β-lactams or macrolides which have habitually been used against the causative pathogens. Solithromycin, a next-generation macrolide, is the first fluoroketolide with activity against most of the frequently isolated bacteria in community-acquired pneumonia, including typical and atypical bacteria as well as macrolide-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae. [Bacterial pneumonia in HIV-infected patients (excluding mycobacterial infection)].

Respiratory infections are the most common complications in HIV patients, regardless of the degree of immunosuppression. Even though antiretroviral therapy has a protective effect on the risk of bacterial pneumonia, this still remains high (including those with CD(4)>500/mm(3)). The most frequently isolated bacteria are Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. The clinical and radiological presentations of lower respiratory tract infections in HIV patients are quite variable. The clinical presentation is more severe and the radiological presentation is more atypical if the immunosu
