We report here our findings on the double-contrast barium enema given to 8 patients with amebic colitis and a comparison is made with endoscopic features. A definite diagnosis of amebic colitis was made by fecal examination or by endoscopic biopsy. Radiologic findings included fine marginal serration, aphthoid ulcers, minute barium flecks, marginal defects, loss of haustration, and deformities of the bowel. Aphthoid ulcers and marginal defects are both characteristic of amebic colitis. The double-contrast barium enema is most useful for differentiating amebiasis from other forms of colitis.

The double contrast barium enema appearances of seven colonic lipomas are reviewed. These lesions have submucosal features: intact mucosa, sharp margination and obtuse angles between the lesion and the adjacent colonic wall, as well as features characteristic of lipomas: pliability and shape change, broad pedicles and spherical appearances en face. They can be differentiated from the more significant colonic adenomas and then CT scanned to establish a histological diagnosis. The authors describe the results of arthropneumotomography in 45 patients with recurrent dislocations or subluxations of the shoulder. Prior studies have suggested that the recurrence rate is lower in breast cysts treated by pneumocystography (injection of air into cyst cavities after cyst aspiration) than in cysts treated by fine-needle aspiration alone. To determine if this is the case for impalpable breast cysts, we reviewed the hospital records and mammograms of 38 women with 41 impalpable cysts. Spinal arachnoidal space was investigated with cerebrospinal fluid drained and replaced with air. Some adequate parameters of the CSF replacement with gases were calculated according to rules derived from 140 pneumomyelographic investigations in patients with lumbar osteochondrosis: baseline CSF pressure, its withdrawal time and total volume. These parameters reflect the volume of arachnoidal space and its conductivity. Due account of these data allowed to determine the beginning of gas insufflation and its total amount.

The diagnosis of a popliteal cyst is usually made on the basis of a history of discomfort and pain in the medial portion of the popliteal region, together with the finding of a palpable mass in the popliteal fossa. The clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by knee arthrography, if the cyst communicates with the knee joint; in recent years, however, noninvasive US has also become an important diagnostic aid to the radiologist. The S. Anna Hospital (Ferrara) experience is here reported in the diagnosis of symptomatic popliteal cysts, with no valve mechanism at the connection with the joint cavity.

We describe a near-fatal event, probably due to air embolism, following an air arthrogram for developmental hip dysplasia in a baby aged four months. The sequence of events and the subsequent treatment are described. There is little information about this complication in the literature. The presumed mechanism and alternative methods for confirmation of placement of the needle are discussed. We no longer use air arthrography in children.

AIM: To evaluate the value of prone imaging in computed tomography pneumocolon.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the U.K., patients commonly undergo computed tomography (CT) pneumocolon in the supine position alone. A prospective analysis of both supine and prone CT images was performed. The degree of distension and the presence/absence of fluid/faecal residue were documented.
